Segmental odontomaxillary dysplasia (SOD) is a rare developmental disorder of the maxilla, primarily involving the posterior part of the maxilla. Clinically, the disorder is often diagnosed in early childhood due to a unilateral buccolingual expansion of the posterior alveolar process, gingival enlargement, absence of one or both premolars in the affected region, delayed eruption of the adjacent teeth and malformations of the primary molars. In this report, four patients with SOD are described. The findings were similar to earlier reports, but for the first time an ipsilateral rough erythema o

A post-mortem radiological study of 514 perinatally dead infants was carried out in order to evaluate the role of the radiological findings in the diagnosis of abnormal conditions and the cause of death. The study was performed in the Department of Radiology of Oulu University Central Hospital, where the records and radiograms of the cases were sent from 22 Finnish central hospitals and a maternity hospital. The radiograms were taken according to a standardized technique. The cases were collected in a period of 20 months from July 1980 to February 1982, and the number corresponds roughly to th

Ewing sarcoma (ES) family of tumors is the second most common primary bone malignancy in children. It usually presents as an aggressive looking lesion often located in the meta-diaphyseal region of long bones, with bone destruction, permeation, cortical thinning and/or destruction, periosteal reaction, and large soft-tissue mass. The purpose of this study is to illustrate the occurrence of a fibrous dysplasia (FD)-appearing ES of the tibia. These cases underscore the potential difficulties encountered in the diagnosis of ES. In this study, we performed a retrospective review of children who pr

Untreated patients with Hurler syndrome (MPSIH) experience progressive neurologic deterioration and early death. Allogeneic bone marrow transplantation (BMT) ameliorates or halts this course. The Storage Disease Collaborative Study Group was formed to evaluate the effectiveness and toxicity of BMT. Effectiveness was defined as engrafted survival with continuing cognitive development. Fifty-four patients deficient in leukocyte alpha-L-iduronidase enzyme activity (median age, 1.8 years; range, 0.4 to 7.9) received high-dose chemotherapy with or without irradiation and BMT from HLA-genotypically

The loss of fur during human evolution has long mystified scientists and the public1-5. Reduced hair density coincides with acquisition of epidermal rete ridges, the developmental timing and molecular mechanisms of which are poorly understood despite their prominence in humans1,6-9. Examination of human and pig skin development has shown that rete ridges form through a mechanism independent from those of hair follicles10,11 and sweat glands3,4,12-15 by establishing interconnected epidermal invaginations. Here we document the occurrence of rete ridges across Mammalia, including in grizzly bears

Malignant infantile osteopetrosis (MIOP) is a rare life-threatening autosomal recessive disorder characterized by defective osteoclast-mediated bone resorption, most commonly caused by pathogenic variants in the TCIRG1 gene. Without hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT), the disease is associated with severe morbidity and early mortality. We report a 15-month-old Moroccan girl born to first-cousin consanguineous parents who initially presented during infancy with failure to thrive, persistent bicytopenia, developmental delay, axial hypotonia, divergent strabismus with nystagmus, and f

In Mesopotamian wheat fields rye grew as weed and after certain developments rye reached Europe and there became a cultivable plant and the dominant grain in certain regions. With the rye also its parasite, the Claviceps purpurea, reached Europe. This ascomycete infects particular rye grains and in its developmental cycle grows to sclerotia bigger than each grain. These forms, the so-called ergots, contain the poisonous ergotalcaloids. After their intake they produce two characteristic forms of ergotism. The clinical picture of the Ergotismus gangraenosus already before the knowledge of its ori

OBJECTIVE: The juvenile equine medial femoral condyle (MFC) is frequently affected with radiographic changes (sclerosis and subchondral lucencies) that arise at a similar site to juvenile osteochondritis dissecans (JOCD) in children. There is little information on maturation of the MFC. To describe the normal development of the equine MFC osteochondral unit from birth to 2 years.
METHODS: Micro CT, histology and immunohistochemistry were performed on healthy equine MFCs (n = 29) at sites where lesions occur. Parameters assessed included: cartilage thickness; the epiphyseal growth plate cartil

Schinzel-Giedion syndrome (SGS, MIM #269150) is a rare syndrome characterized by severe intellectual disability, typical facial gestalt, hypertrichosis and multiple congenital malformations including skeletal, genitourinary, renal and cardiac abnormalities. The prognosis of SGS is very severe and death occurs generally within a few years after birth. In 2002, we reported 2 children with SGS with a follow-up of 3 years. They presented a very similar and particular phenotype associating distinctive facial gestalt, severe developmental delay, megacalycosis, progressive neurodegeneration, alacrimi

Multiple myeloma (MM) is an incurable malignant disease of the terminal developmental stage of B-lymphocytes. While genetic heterogeneity of MM is widely described, little is known about its genetic basis as well as primary damage during plasma cells (PC) development. In this study, we focused on genome-wide screening of DNA copy number changes using oligonucleotide-based array-CGH together with I-FISH of the IgH locus rearrangements in pair samples of bone marrow B-cells (CD19+) and CD138+ PC from newly diagnosed MM patients. The IgH disruption was found in 8.9% (4/45) of CD19+ samples and in

The stem cell marker nestin (NES) is found in dividing cells of developing and regenerating tissues. Upon terminal differentiation, NES expression is diminished but may be re-expressed following injury or in cancer. Surprisingly, we recently confirmed NES as a tumour-specific marker for mature CD138(+) 38(+) plasma cells (PC) in multiple myeloma (MM). The present study analysed NES expression throughout the spectrum of MM developmental stages, starting with individuals with no haematological malignancy, through monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS) and MM to plasma cell leu

Apoptosis is essential for the development, function and homeostasis of the immune system. Experiments with transgenic and gene knock-out mice have shown that defects in the control of apoptosis in the hematopoietic system can promote the development of autoimmunity or hematological malignancy. In contrast, excessive apoptosis of normally long-lived hemopoietic cells can lead to lymphopenia and immunodeficiency. In mammals, cell death in response to developmental cues and many cell stress signals is regulated by the opposing factions of the Bcl-2 family of proteins. In particular, the pro-apop

Fanconi anemia (FA) is an autosomal recessive disorder that is defined by cellular hypersensitivity to DNA cross-linking agents, and is characterized clinically by developmental abnormalities, progressive bone-marrow failure, and predisposition to leukemia and solid tumors. There is extensive genetic heterogeneity, with at least 11 different FA complementation groups. FA-A is the most common group, accounting for approximately 65% of all affected individuals. The mutation spectrum of the FANCA gene, located on chromosome 16q24.3, is highly heterogeneous. Here we summarize all sequence variatio

BACKGROUND: Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva (FOP) is an ultrarare autosomal dominant disorder caused by ACVR1 gene mutations, leading to dysregulated bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) signaling. It is characterized by congenital great toe malformations and progressive, trauma-induced heterotopic ossification (HO). Misdiagnosis is common, and invasive procedures can exacerbate HO. Current management focuses on flare-up control and trauma prevention.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 12-year-old Asian boy presented with a left femoral fracture. His history included developmental delay, and HO formation

Maternal calcium deficiency during pregnancy and lactation may predispose offspring to metabolic, skeletal, and cardiovascular disorders in the context of the Developmental Origins of Health and Disease (DOHaD) paradigm. Experimental evidence from rodent models under severe or extreme calcium restriction, particularly studies by Takaya and colleagues, indicates that such conditions can induce insulin resistance, impair bone metabolism, and produce sex-specific cardiometabolic phenotypes in offspring. These effects appear to involve impaired placental calcium transport, altered expression of pl
