INTRODUCTION: Candida albicans is an important priority fungal pathogen that commonly colonizes humans and a wide range of animal hosts, although its population structure in wildlife remains poorly explored.
METHODS: In this study, 41 C. albicans isolates obtained from Italian wild animals (European hedgehogs, wolves, foxes, badgers, roe deer and porcupine) were identified by hwp1-specific PCR and subsequently genetically characterized using ABC typing, mating-type locus analysis and multilocus sequence typing (MLST).
RESULTS: Several isolates were heterozygous at the hwp1 locus, and one rar…

Species-specific prevalence was highest in Eurasian otters and roe deer (62.1 % and 48.6 %, respectively). Methodological variability also influenced prevalence rates, with disc diffusion reporting the highest prevalence (17.3 %) compared to PCR-based methods (3.9 %).

The presence of diarrhea at the time of fecal sample collection, oocyst count, and breed were associated with whether cattle were infected with C parvum or C bovis, with animals more likely to be infected with C parvum if they had diarrhea …

IntroductionIn the United States, more than 11.5 million people participate in hunting. Deer hunters commonly use tree stands as tall as 8 m. Falls from tree stands can cause injury and even death. Previous studies have investigated the types of injuries sustained from tree stand falls, but few have investigated patient outcomes. This study investigated patient outcomes related to tree stand falls and analyzed injury types resulting from tree stand falls, and this paper discusses factors that may lead to tree stand falls.MethodsThis study used a retrospective chart review of patients at the sa…

Powassan virus (POWV, family Flaviviridae) is a reemerging tick-borne virus endemic in North America and Russia. In 1997, a POWV-like agent was isolated from Ixodes scapularis in New England and determined to be genetically distinct from the original POWV isolate. This revealed the existence of two lineages: lineage 1, prototype Powassan virus (POWV-1) and lineage 2, deer tick virus (DTV). POWV-1 is thought to be primarily maintained in a cycle between I. cookei and woodchucks and I. marxi and squirrels, while DTV is primarily maintained in a cycle between I. scapularis and small mammal hosts.…

Cervus and cucumis peptides (Lugua polypeptides, LG) are traditional Chinese medicine, which are active components of polypeptide extracted from Sika deer bone and melon seed, and they contain bone induced polypeptide biological factors. Umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cell, (UC-MSC) have tissue repair multiple effects, anti-inflammatory, and immune regulation function, which become a very promising start in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) treatment. Hence, LG combined UC-MSC can significantly enhance the UC-MSC treatment of rheumatoid arthritis (RA).To explore the clinical curative effect and thera…

We document an established population of blacklegged ticks, Ixodes scapularis, on Corkscrew Island, Kenora District, Ontario, Canada. Primers of the outer surface protein A (OspA) gene, the flagellin (fla) gene, and the flagellin B (flaB) gene were used in the PCR assays to detect Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato (s.l.), the Lyme disease bacterium. In all, 60 (73%) of 82 adult I. scapularis, were infected with B. burgdorferi s.l. As well, 6 (43%) of 14 unfed I. scapularis nymphs were positive for B. burgdorferi s.l. An I. scapularis larva was also collected from a deer mouse, and several unfed …

Listeria monocytogenes is a bacterium that can cause disease in many species, including humans, livestock, and wildlife. Increased interactions via shared habitats may promote pathogen transmission among these groups. Our objectives were to evaluate the Southeastern Cooperative Wildlife Disease Study diagnostic data to characterize and compare L. monocytogenes-induced lesions and comorbidities in gray foxes and wild turkeys, and to describe cases of listeriosis in 2 cervids. From 1991-2020, 8 gray foxes, 8 wild turkeys, a neonatal elk, and a white-tailed deer fawn from several eastern states i…

Cryptosporidium hominis and Cryptosporidium parvum, which infect humans equally, are genetically/antigenically almost identical. It remains unclear, however, whether infection with C. hominis protects against C. parvum. Gnotobiotic piglets were used to investigate cross-protection. After ≥3 days of recovery from C. hominis infection, the piglets were completely protected against subsequent challenge with C. hominis but only partially against challenge with C. parvum, as compared with age-matched control animals challenged with either species. In conclusion, C. hominis-specific immunity was suf

The purpose of this study was to determine a practical method in Wapiti (Cervus elaphus) of using predetermined sexed Sika (Cervus nippon) semen. Semen was collected by electro-ejaculation from one stag of proven fertility and transported to the laboratory where it was retained as unsorted (control) or was separated into X- and Y-chromosome-bearing sperm using a modified high-speed cell sorter. Wapiti hinds (n=81) were inseminated into the uterus by rectum manipulation with 1 x 10(6) (X1 and Y1 group, respectively) or 2 x 10(6) (X2 and Y2 group, respectively) of sorted frozen-thawed and 1 x 10

The main osseous landmarks of the border area between the infratemporal fossa and the para- and retro pharyngeal space are the sphenoidal spine and the pterygoid and styloid processes, and the styloid vagina. These landmarks, as well as some vascular anomalies, were studied in order to illustrate the variable anatomy, which is encountered in the surgical lateral transzygomatic infratemporal fossa approach. Hundred well-preserved human skull bases were examined. The deep infratemporal fossa was dissected into 54 halves of fixed cadaveric head and neck specimens of both sexes. Dry skull specimen

Eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) virus perpetuates in an enzootic cycle involving ornithophilic mosquito vectors, principally Culiseta mela … -eyed vireo, and common yellowthroat. Mammalian-derived blood meals were identified as white-tailed deer, horse, domestic cat, and eastern pipistrelle bat. There were three isolations of EEE virus from Cs. melanura and one from Cs. morsitans. These results suggest that wood thrush and a few other passerine birds may play key roles in supporting EEE vir …

Though considerable circumstantial evidence suggests that the pathogen of prion disease is proteinaceous, it has not yet been conclusively identified. Epidemiological observations indicate that a microbial vector is responsible for the transmission of natural prion disease in sheep and goats and that the real causative agent may correspond to a structural protein of that microorganism. The microbial protein should resemble prion protein (PrP) and may replicate itself in the host by using mammalian DNA. A similar phenomenon was already described with a protein antigen of the ameba Naegleria gru

From December 1991 through January 1995, a disease survey was conducted on herds of free-ranging, hunter-killed elk (Cervus elaphus nelsoni) from three areas in proximity to Yellowstone National Park (YNP), Wyoming (USA), after tuberculosis caused by Mycobacterium bovis was discovered in a captive herd of elk in the area. Complete or partial sets of specimens from 289 elk collected between December 1991 and January 1993 were examined histologically; no mycobacterial lesions were observed. Lesions of tuberculosis were not detected in tonsils or lymph nodes of the head from an additional 99 hunt
