[Fibrous dysplasia of the scull discovered accidently on CT from different indication].

UNLABELLED: Fibrous dysplasia (dysplasia fibrosa -DF) is a local disorder of spongy bone structure caused by local pathological metabolism. Transformation of trabecular bony structure into connective tissue takes place. Inside the transformed bone scattered connective tissue elements, cartilaginous elements and pathological density are found. The disease proliferates either in the medullary bone or in subperiosteal region, and the development of fibrous tissue causes bone expansion with thinning of overlying cortex. The radiological appearance depends on the stage of the disease. The margins o

The success of 6-month stenting in endonasal frontal sinus surgery.

The ultimate success or failure of frontal sinus surgical procedures, whether they be endonasal or external, is determined essentially by the rate of restenosis of the frontal sinus outflow tract or neo-ostium postoperatively. Long-term stenting for a period of several months significantly reduces the rate of restenosis, particularly in difficult cases. We retrospectively reviewed the cases of 12 patients who received 21 frontal nasal stents, which were left in place for 6 months. Based on outcomes measures that included endoscopy or radiologic findings and patients' self-evaluations, we concl

Craniofacial Fibrous Dysplasia to Affect or Not the Optic Nerve in Long-Term Follow-Up of Three Cases.

Fibrous dysplasia of the bone is characterized by immature fibrous bones of trabeculae and fibrovascular proliferation in the medulla. In this study, we report three consecutive patients with craniofacial fibrous dysplasia with or without optic nerve involvement. In Case 1, a 43-year-old man with blurred vision in the right eye at the first visit was well until the age of 54 years, when he came back with symptoms suggestive of paranasal sinusitis. Computed tomography scans disclosed a mucocele in the right sphenoid sinus and thickened bilateral ethmoid, sphenoid, and frontal bones. He underwen

Sphenoid sinus is a rare site for tumor-induced osteomalacia: A case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: In this paper, we present a rare case of tumor-induced osteomalacia (TIO) and a literature review of this rare disease. METHODS: A case of TIO of the isolated sphenoid sinus was reported. Furthermore, the clinical features of TIO in the sphenoid sinus and other sinonasal sinuses were also reviewed and summarized. RESULTS: A 35-year-old man with muscle weakness and lower back pain came to the Department of Neurology. No obvious neurological disease was found; however, magnetic resonance imaging of the extremities accidentally showed a tumor in the axilla. Bone scintigraphy showed

Multimodality imaging evaluation of nasal sinus alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma: Two case reports.

BACKGROUND: Rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) is a common pleomorphic malignant soft tissue sarcoma in children and adolescents that originates from rhabdomyoblasts or mesenchymal precursor cells. Alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma (ARMS) mostly occurs in adolescents aged 10-15 years and is characterized by more aggressive behaviors and worse prognosis than other sarcomas, prone to lymphatic and hematogenous metastasis in the early stage as well as metastasizing to breast, testis, pancreas, and other parts. ARMS often occurs in the limbs and genitourinary system, however, head and neck ARMS are relatively rare wh

Endoscopic endonasal resection of anterior cranial base meningiomas.

OBJECTIVE: The endonasal route may be feasible for the resection of anterior cranial base tumors that abut the paranasal sinuses. There are several case reports and mixed case series discussing this approach. Other than pituitary adenomas, there is a lack of literature describing the outcomes of endonasal approaches for single-tumor types such as meningiomas. METHODS: In this study, we describe our current endoscopic endonasal technique and demonstrate the feasibility of using it to access anterior cranial base meningiomas from the back wall of the frontal sinus to the sella and laterally to

[Decrease in general health status, febrile state and sinusitis in renal insufficiency].

UNLABELLED: A 59-year old man, dialysed for 9 years because of chronic renal failure of unknown etiology, was also suffering from a hypertensive cardiopathy and anemia. He has received more than 70 units of blood over the past few years. An elevated blood aluminium level prompted treatment with desferrioxamine for 3 years. Following episodes of melena, an intestinal-wall lesion, located 8 cm above the ileo-caecal valve was discovered. Blood serotonin levels were elevated; biopsy of the liver revealed tumor cells with round-shaped nuclei which stained positive for synaptophysin, findings compat

Clinical Predictors of Frontal Ostium Restenosis After Draf 3 Procedure for Refractory Chronic Rhinosinusitis.

Background The Draf 3 procedure has been demonstrated to be effective in the treatment of refractory frontal sinus disease. A variety of clinical factors may contribute to the change of frontal neo-ostium (FNO) area after this procedure. Imaging plays a vital role in the evaluation and follow-up after surgery and provides useful prognostic information. Objectives (1) To investigate the influence of local anatomic factors on FNO after a Draf 3 procedure by radiological measurements on imaging software and (2) to explore other predictive factors of FNO restenosis. Methods Twenty-four patients wi

Evaluation of resident's training for endoscopic sinus surgery using a sheep's head.

Training in functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) is an essential part of each ENT resident and it takes place on a very fragile area. This study focus on showing the learning curve of FESS, using an anatomical model such as the sheep's head. Four residents in our centre performed dissections. Each of these residents operated eight sheep's head. They performed an endoscopic septoplasty followed by maxillary antrostomy, total ethmoidectomy and frontal sinusotomy on every head. A staff member guided all procedures and checked for the appropriate dissection and complications occurred. Analys

Foramen caecum canal: a potential anatomical pathway with clinical implications.

BACKGROUND: The foramen caecum of frontal bone (FC) is traditionally described as a conduit between the extracranial and intracranial venous systems, potentially transmitting venous flow through a structure known as the vein of the foramen caecum (VFC). However, the existence and anatomical characteristics of this venous pathway remain controversial. This study aimed to evaluate the radiological presence of the foramen caecum canal (FCC) - a structural pathway through which such a vein could potentially course - using paranasal sinus computed tomography (CT) scans. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A re
