Skin reactions among Bulgarian dental students: A self-report questionnaire survey.

BACKGROUND: Dental students are at high risk of developing adverse skin reactions following practical work during the dentistry degree program. They encounter multiple irritants and allergens that may cause skin reactions on exposed parts of the body, notably the hands. OBJECTIVES: To estimate the prevalence of skin reactions related to the pre-clinical and clinical training courses of the dentistry program and associated risk factors in Bulgarian dental students. METHOD: A cross-sectional study was performed using a self-report questionnaire. RESULTS: A total of 467 dental students complet

Skin protection in nursing work: promoting the use of gloves and hand alcohol.

Nursing has been identified as a wet-work occupation, with a high prevalence of occupational irritant contact dermatitis. Reduction of exposure to skin irritants contributes to the prevention of occupational skin disease in nurses. The role of the use of soap and water, hand alcohol and gloves in prevention programmes is discussed. 2 additional measures for reducing exposure to skin irritants are postulated: use of hand alcohol instead of soap and water in disinfection procedures when the hands are not visibly dirty; use of gloves in wet activities such as patient washing to prevent the hands

Cocos nucifera and glycerine afterwork moisturizers for secondary prevention of hand dermatitis among fabric worker: a randomized, double-blind, cross over trial.

The use of skin barrier-enhancing topical medication is a favorable approach for the treatment of occupational hand dermatitis (OHD). Cocos nucifera or coconut oil is one of the best sources of lipid enriched with laurate acid, and glycerin is a well-known humectant that improves skin hydration. This study is aimed is to evaluate the effectiveness of C. nucifera and glycerin for secondary prevention of OHD among batik (Indonesian traditional fabric) workers. In a randomized, double-blind, crossover trial, the effect of glycerine-C. nucifera cream versus glycerin-only was considered with multip

A cross-sectional study to analyze the clinical subtype, contact sensitization and impact of disease severity on quality of life and cost of illness in patients of hand eczema.

BACKGROUND: The high incidence, chronicity, frequent recurrences and severity of hand eczema leads to a massive impact on the quality of life. Despite great medical and socioeconomic importance, there is a paucity of data that addresses the cost of illness and economic factors associated with hand eczema. Most of the studies have originated from Europe and none have been reported from India. AIM: To analyze the clinical subtype, the pattern of contact sensitization and the impact of severity of disease on the quality of life and cost of illness in patients of hand eczema. METHODS: Hundred pa

Multispectral imaging of hand eczema.

BACKGROUND: Hand eczema is a disease with large variation in clinical presentation and severity. Scoring systems for quantitative severity assessment exist. However, they are observer-dependent. An objective quantitative tool for scoring of hand eczema would improve categorization of hand eczema. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the usefulness of multispectral imaging in assessing severity of hand eczema with respect to extent and the different morphological features. METHODS: Patients with hand eczema (n = 60) and healthy controls (n = 28) were included. The severity of hand eczema was assessed by

A novel treatment for idiopathic knuckle pads with cantharidin-podophylotoxin-salicylic acid.

Knuckle pads are benign subcutaneous nodules that appear most frequently on the small joints of the hands. In children, they are often idiopathic, and no universally effective treatment has been reported. We present the case of an adolescent successfully treated with a combination of topical cantharidin -podophylotoxin -salicylic acid.

Interventions for preventing occupational irritant hand dermatitis.

BACKGROUND: Occupational irritant hand dermatitis (OIHD) causes significant functional impairment, disruption of work, and discomfort in the working population. Different preventive measures such as protective gloves, barrier creams and moisturisers can be used, but it is not clear how effective these are. This is an update of a Cochrane review which was previously published in 2010. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of primary preventive interventions and strategies (physical and behavioural) for preventing OIHD in healthy people (who have no hand dermatitis) who work in occupations where th

Sporicidal effect of amorolfine and other antimycotics used in the therapy of fungal nail infections.

Although topical antifungal therapies for treating onychomycosis are available, the cure rate is unsatisfactorily low with a simultaneously high risk of recurrence. One reason might be the formation of dormant fungal cells by the pathogen, known as spores, which can survive in the affected nail keratin, thereby evading the effect of antifungal drugs. In this in vitro study, the ability of amorolfine and four other antimycotics (ciclopirox, bifonazole, terbinafine and fluconazole) to kill microconidia of the dermatophyte Trichophyton rubrum, chlamydospores of the dermatophyte Epidermophyton flo

The First Case of Total Dystrophic Onychomycosis Caused by Aspergillus clavatus Resistant to Antifungal Drugs.

Onychomycosis is a common fungal infection of nails which is mainly caused by dermatophyte species and less often by yeasts and non-dermatophyte molds. We present a case of onychomycosis due to Aspergillus clavatus for the first time worldwide. The patient was an immunocompetent 32-year-old woman who identified with Psoriasis of the nail. The presence of A. clavatus in a nail sample was confirmed using microscopic and culture analysis followed by PCR of the β-tubulin gene. After antifungal susceptibility test, it is revealed that the isolate was resistant to the majority of common antifungal d

Intensified fractional CO2 laser-assisted photodynamic therapy vs. laser alone for organ transplant recipients with multiple actinic keratoses and wart-like lesions: a randomized half-side comparative trial on dorsal hands.

BACKGROUND: Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a well-documented treatment for actinic keratosis (AK), but achieves inferior efficacy in organ transplant recipients (OTRs), particularly in acral regions. Ablative fractional laser (AFXL) intensifies the PDT response and may improve the efficacy of AK clearance when used as monotherapy. OBJECTIVES: To compare the efficacy of a single treatment with AFXL-assisted PDT vs. AFXL alone for difficult-to-treat AKs and wart-like lesions (WLLs) in OTRs. METHODS: Ten OTRs were included with a total of 680 AKs (severity grade I-III) and 409 WLLs on the dorsal

Tacrolimus 0.1% vs mometasone furoate topical treatment in allergic contact hand eczema: a prospective randomized clinical study.

Tacrolimus is a macrolide immunosuppressant that has been demonstrated to inhibit T-lymphocyte activation without the side-effects of corticosteroids. The safety profile of tacrolimus makes it a promising therapeutic option for dermatitis. To evaluate and compare the therapeutic ability of tacrolimus 0.1% ointment and mometasone furoate 0.1% ointment in patients with chronic hand eczema and positive patch tests. Thirty adults with chronic hand eczema and positive patch test reaction to relevant contact allergens were treated with tacrolimus 0.1% ointment or mometasone furoate 0.1% ointment in
