INTRODUCTION: Peroneal tendon subluxation is a relatively rare disorder that is often misdiagnosed as an ankle sprain. It affects mainly young adults, usually during sports activities. It is mostly caused by avulsion of the superior peroneal retinaculum (SPR) from its fibular insertion, which requires surgical intervention, especially for cases of symptomatic chronic peroneal tendon subluxation and/or dislocation. We reported a case of peroneal tendon subluxation of left ankle treated with peroneal groove deepening and retinaculum ligament repair, the objective of which is to illustrate the ef

The purpose of this article was to analyze clinical and functional results after medial patellofemoral ligament (MPFL) reconstruction and to establish if a computer-assisted physical test battery could determine a "safe timing" to return to sport. We hypothesized that "time-based" criteria to declare safe return to sport could not be reliable to predict functional recover. Fifty-eight young athletic patients were selected after isolated reconstruction of MPFL. The minimum follow-up was 8 months. All the patients were evaluated subjectively with Kujala and Short Form 36 (SF-36) scores and objec

BACKGROUND: Nail-patella syndrome (NPS) is an autosomal dominant disorder caused by mutations in the LMX1B gene and is characterized by nail dysplasia, skeletal abnormalities, and nephropathy. We herein report a case of steroid-resistant nephrotic syndrome (SRNS) prior to overt orthopedic symptoms in a patient with NPS.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 24-year-old woman presented to our hospital with knee pain. She had poorly developed nails, hypoplastic patellas, dislocation of the elbows, and iliac horns in the pelvis. At the age of 7, she developed nephrotic syndrome and was diagnosed with primary foc

Modern imaging techniques, among which nuclear magnetic resonance currently ranks first, have made it much easier to understand the internal disorders of the temporomandibular joint. While computed tomography still is the ideal technique for all bony affections in the articular region, especially for injuries. MRI now is an essential first-intention complementary examination. It allows assessing the location of the meniscus and very well defines the pathology being explored: reducible or irreducible dislocation of the meniscus, either purely anterior or anterolateral, the latter being better v

BACKGROUND: First-time patellar dislocation with an associated chondral or osteochondral loose body is typically treated operatively to address the loose fragment. The incidence of recurrent instability in this patient population if the medial patellofemoral ligament (MPFL) is not reconstructed is unknown.
PURPOSE: To determine the recurrent instability rate in patients undergoing surgery for patellar instability with chondral or osteochondral loose bodies, as well as to identify and stratify risk factors for recurrent instability.
STUDY DESIGN: Case series; Level of evidence, 4.
METHODS: T

PURPOSE: To elucidate the outcomes of lateral retinaculum plasty versus lateral retinacular release with concomitant medial patellofemoral ligament (MPFL) reconstruction.
METHODS: In a prospective study, 59 patients treated at our institution from 2012 to 2014 were included. The 59 patients were randomly divided into two groups. Group I included 27 patients who underwent lateral retinacular release and MPFL reconstruction. Group II included 32 patients who underwent lateral retinaculum plasty and MPFL reconstruction. All patients were followed up for at least 2 years and all assessments were

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to compare the muscle activation feature of vastus medialis obliquus (VMO) and vastus lateralis (VL) between the osteoarthritic knee patients with patellar lateral subluxation (Group 1B) and without patellar lateral subluxation (Group 1A).
METHODS: Isokinetic muscle strength of the knee extensor was evaluated using a CYBEX NORM dynamometer with angular velocities of 80, 120 and 240 degrees/second (°/sec) respectively, contraction activities of VMO and VL muscle were recorded with synchronized surface electromyography (sEMG). Age-matched healthy subjects wer

Patellar instability is a disabling musculoskeletal condition. Whilst previous texts have suggested that twisting activities may cause patients to experience instability symptoms, no studies have assessed which activities are related to the patient's perceived instability. The purpose of this study was to determine which activities and with what frequency patients with patellar instability symptoms, perceive their patella to be unstable. Ninety patients referred because of recurrent patellar instability were asked to assess the frequency with which they perceived patellar instability for 19 ev

Osseous injuries may be articular, extra-articular, or physeal, and may be related to direct trauma, avulsion forces, or chronic microtrauma. Muscle and tendon injuries about the knee may occur alone or in association with more significant osseous and ligament injuries. Radiographs or computed radiography images remain an important screening technique for patients who have suspected knee injuries. After initial radiographs, MR imaging has become the most common modality for detection and complete evaluation of osseous and soft-tissue injuries about the knee when those radiographs and other tec

Dislocation of the proximal tibiofibular joint (PTFJ) in association with a displaced tibial shaft fracture and an intact fibula is an exceedingly rare injury. We present 2 cases of tibia fractures associated with an intact fibula and a PTFJ dislocation. The first case involves a man who sustained a closed spiral fracture of the distal tibial shaft, with an intact fibula, an anterolaterally dislocated PTFJ, and a partial tear of the lateral collateral ligament. The tibia was percutaneously plated, and the PTFJ was reduced and then stabilized with temporary screw fixation. The second case invol

BACKGROUND: Knowledge of the gait dynamics in patients with hip dysplasia may help to understand the consequences of the mechanical changes in the hip.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We evaluated the walking pattern of 14 women with hip dysplasia (median age 39 (24-50) years) before periacetabular osteotomy and compared it with a control group of 12 healthy women (median age 35 (24-56) years). Data were collected using five video cameras and two force plates. We used an inverse dynamics approach to calculate sagittal joint angles, moments and power in the stance phase.
RESULTS: The patient group show

Procedures for the treatment of patello-femoral malalignment are grouped into two categories, proximal realignment and distal realignment. However, no clear indications in respect of these realignments have been reported. We have tried to evaluate patello-femoral alignment three-dimensionally using CT. The results lead us to group patients with recurrent patella dislocation into three types. Type 1 comprises patients with normal patello-femoral alignment. Type 2 comprises patients whose patella only deviates laterally and who need proximal realignment. Type 3 comprises patients whose patella a

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to establish diagnostic criteria for meniscal subluxation, and to determine whether there was any connection between meniscal subluxation and other common meniscal and knee-joint abnormalities.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The normal position of the meniscal body was assessed in 10 asymptomatic volunteers. MR signs of meniscal subluxation were evaluated retrospectively in 60 symptomatic patients with pain in the knee, impaired mobility, and/or joint swelling who had no clear diagnosis after the evaluation of case history, clinical examination, and radiography. We prospectively evaluated 30 hips of 22 patients who had normal knees with a mean age of 53.4 years (range, 38-72 years). In the early postoperative period, genu valgum deformity was observed in all knees. Of 22 patients, 17 complained of severe pain owing to strain in the medial collateral ligament and iliotibial tract. Postoperatively, the ipsilateral extremities of the patients were extended by a mean of 16.5 mm (8-25 mm). Q angles of the patients increased by a mean of 4.4° ± 2.5° (P < .001). Although the Harris hip scores were improved (40.7-87.8 points), postoperative Lysholm-Gillquist
