Vestibular lesions selectively abolish body rotation-induced, but not lithium-induced, conditioned taste aversions (oral rejection responses) in rats.

Pairing a novel taste with provocative vestibular stimulation results in conditioned taste aversions in both rats and humans. Vestibular system involvement in gustatory conditioning was examined in sham-lesioned or labyrinthectomized rats. Three conditioning trials consisted of 30 min access to asaccharin (0.1%) solution followed by 30 min of rotation (70 rpm) or sham rotation. In a taste reactivity test with saccharin, rotated sham-lesioned rats, but not labyrinthectomized rats, exhibited increased oral rejection reactions compared with control rats. When conditioned with lithium chloride, bo

[The role of high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in the diagnosis of preoperative and postoperative complications caused by acquired cholesteatomas].

The role of high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in the diagnosis of preoperative and postoperative complications caused by acquired cholesteatomas will be described in this paper. The pre- and postoperative imaging of the temporal bone was performed with HRCT and MRI.HRCT and MRI were performed in the axial and coronal plane. MRI was done with T2 weighted and T1 weighted sequences both before and after the intravenous application of contrast material. All imaging findings were confirmed clinically or surgically. The preoperative cholesteatoma-caused

Vestibular control of skeletal geometry in the guinea pig: a problem of good trim?

Motor control of different segments of the body with multiple degrees of freedom appears to be coordinated by utilizing preferred axes of motor activity. This hypothesis may also be applied to vestibular control of posture. To explore this question we studied the anatomical relationship between the head and the cervical vertebral column by taking radiographs of the head-neck region in unrestrained alert guinea pigs. We determined that biomechanical constraints contribute to the stereotypical skeletal geometry observed in the resting animal and to a functional segmentation of the head-neck move

[Vestibular compensation. Review of the literature and clinical applications].

Vestibular compensation is an excellent model for the study of plasticity of the adult central nervous system. Therefore it has been the subject of several studies in humans and animals, which will be briefly summed up by the authors. Lesions of the labyrinth or vestibular neurectomy are immediately followed of postural and oculomotor disorders, as well as by dynamic deficits of the various vestibular reflexes (vestibulo-ocular and vestibulonucal reflexes). While the former problems always recede in all species, the restoration of the dynamic properties of vestibular reflexes largely depends u

The Tullio phenomenon and perilymph fistula.

Establishing the diagnosis of perilymph fistula remains a dilemma. At this time, identification of an active perilymph fistula can be confirmed only by surgery. On the basis of clinical history and audiovestibular testing, 54 patients underwent middle ear exploration for possible perilymph fistula at the Colorado Ear Clinic between July 1980 and June 1986. This group represents approximately 1% of all surgical procedures performed during that period. Seven patients (12%) were found to have the Tullio phenomenon preoperatively. Six of these were found to have active, free-flowing fistulas at th

Optimizing MR imaging for detecting small tumors in the cerebellopontine angle and internal auditory canal.

Relative resolving power was used to determine the optimal MR imaging pulse sequence for detecting small tumors of the internal auditory canal and the cerebellopontine angle. Resolving power takes into consideration these important image characteristics: signal-to-noise ratio, contrast, and spatial resolution. The study was performed on a 1.5-T magnet using a 256 X 256 matrix and a 3-mm slice thickness. The TR ranged from 400-2000 msec; the number of excitations was either two or six; and the pixel size was 0.94, 0.78, or 0.63 mm. Theoretical calculations of relative resolving power were compa

[Expansive processes of the cerebellopontile angle. Neuro-otological evaluation of 146 cases].

A group of 146 patients with surgically proved C-P angle tumors were studied in respect of the incidence of the trigemino-facial and cochleo-vestibular signs. The particular purpose of this study was to determine the pertinent signs in the early diagnosis of the C-P angle tumor, its stage and histo-pathologic feature's determination. The principal indices of C-P angle tumor are: Wrisberg nerve dysfunction; neural hearing loss as designed by stapedius reflex study and BERA; unilateral vestibular deficit without true and persistent vertigo, first at all when associated with central vestibular si

The correlation between the vestibulo-ocular system and the vestibulo-spinal system in Ménière's disease based on categorical principal component analysis.

Correlations among different equilibrium function tests were investigated in 130 patients with Ménière disease. The tests consisted of 22 different items, and the possible results could be put into a total of 49 categories. Using a factor analytic method, results falling in the positive area of the 1st axis indicate normality of the vestibular system, and results in the negative area, indicate an abnormality of the vestibular system. On the 2nd axis, the negative direction indicates an abnormality of the vestibulo-spinal system, and the positive direction an abnormality of the vestibulo-ocular

Correlations between cochlear hair cell loss and shifts of masked and absolute behavioral auditory thresholds in the house mouse.

Masked and absolute behavioral auditory thresholds were measured in kanamycin-treated C3H mice with a significant damage or loss of outer hair cells (OHCs) near the cochlear base, and in 17--24-month-old NMRI mice with a significant loss of OHCs and inner hair cells (IHCs) in the basal region and of OHCs near the apex. A loss of IHCs is correlated with an increase in absolute thresholds. A moderate damage or loss of OHCs in a cochlear region had no effect on absolute thresholds but correlated with a decrease and other changes of characteristics of masked thresholds in the respective frequency

The Campomelic syndrome. Temporal bone histopathologic features and otolaryngologic manifestations.

The campomelic syndrome is characterized by dwarfism, craniofacial anomalies, bowing of the tibiae and femora, cutaneous dimpling overlying the tibial bend, respiratory distress, and early death. Otolaryngologic manifestations include flat facies with a broad nasal bridge, low-set ears, cleft palate, mandibular hypoplasia, and tracheobronchial malacia. The underlying pathologic feature appears to be disturbance in cartilage growth involving the affected bones and the respiratory tract cartilage. The cause is unknown. We report clinical and histopathologic features in two cases of this syndrome

Co-existing post-stapedectomy fistula and acoustic neuroma.

A 66 year old woman had light-headedness and ataxia which increased slowly despite tissue seal of a post-stapedectomy oval window fistula. The cause was shown to be a large acoustic neuroma, ipsilateral to the side of the fistula. The history, physical, and laboratory findings are presented.

Perilymphatic fistula and its interest to audiologists.

Forty-one patients who had sudden hearing loss associated with spontaneous perilymphatic fistllas were reviewed in this investigation. A history of physical exertion or an upper respiratory infection prior to the onset of hearing loss strongly suggests the presence of spontaneous perilymphatic fistula. However, absence of such a history does not necessarily preclude the possibility of membrane rupture. A great variation in audiologic and vestibular findings was observed. Tinnitus was present for most patients and vertigo or disequilibrium was reported by some. Findings support the need for sur
