Efficacy of moxidectin long-acting injectable formulation (1 mg/kg bodyweight) against first instar larvae of Oestrus ovis in naturally infected sheep.

The objective of the current study was to evaluate the efficacy of a single treatment with a long-acting injectable formulation of moxidectin (MOX) at 1.0 mg/kg bodyweight (b.w.) against natural infection by nasal bots (Oestrus ovis) in sheep with special attention to first instar larvae (L1). Firstly, a local farm with clinical history of oestrosis was chosen to conduct the assay. A total of 49 sheep were pre-selected at the end of the summer according to the presence of evident clinical signs of infection and confirmed later by means of an indirect ELISA against excretory-secretory products

Case report: Endoscopic removal of a nasal Cuterebra larva from a puppy.

Cuterebriasis in small animals is caused by infestation by, and internal migration of, a larva of the Cuterebra fly. This article presents a case of nasal cuterebriasis in a puppy seen at the Louisiana Veterinary Referral Center and reviews the clinical signs and diagnosis of, and treatment options for, Cuterebra infestations. It also describes an unusual treatment plan to successfully remove the larva.

Ophthalmomyiasis externa in a puppy due to Cuterebra infestation.

An 8 wk old Scottish terrier was evaluated for a 2×2 cm mass located directly adjacent to the lateral canthus of the right eye. Examination revealed a well-developed Cuterebra larva at the lateral aspect of the orbital cavity, anchored at the lateral canthus. The larva was manually removed under general anesthesia, and the eyelid margin was repaired. Systemic and topical antibiotics along with systemic anti-inflammatory treatment were instituted. The lesion healed completely, revealing a normal functional right eye 10 days after removal of the Cuterebra larva. Careful manual removal of the lar

A survey of the prevalence of blowfly strike and the control measures used in the Rûens area of the Western Cape Province of South Africa.

Blowfly strike and the methods used to combat blowfly strike were recorded on 33 properties in the Rûens area of South Africa during 2003/2004. Data were recorded on Merino and Dohne Merino hoggets (n = 4951) with at least 3 months' wool growth. The following data were captured: presence or absence of strike, site of the strike (body or breech), presence or absence of dermatophilosis as well as subjective scores for wool quality and wool colour. Control measures recorded include: chemical treatment (preventative and spot treatment), crutching, mulesing and the use of the Lucitrap system. Blowf

Oestrus ovis infestation of a dog in the UK.

In March 2011, a dog on a sheep farm in the Cotswolds, UK, expelled a mature live third-stage larva of the sheep nasal botfly, Oestrus ovis, after a violent and traumatic sneezing episode. The dog had been infected with first-stage larvae deposited by an adult fly the previous autumn; larval development had progressed throughout the winter and spring with few apparent clinical signs and possibly masked by ongoing immunotherapy for an unrelated condition. Identification of the parasite at the Liverpool School of Veterinary Science was made from a submitted puparium, the "chrysalis" stage to whi

Human external ophthalmomyiasis occurring in Barbados.

Human infection with the sheep nasal botfly Oestrus ovis occurs sporadically. In most cases, there is a history of a strike in the eye by the adult fly. Human O. ovis has been reported rarely from the Americas. We report the first case of O. ovis infection in the Caribbean region, which occurred in an urban area of Barbados. The patient responded to removal of the larvae from the conjunctiva and symptomatic treatment.

Seasonal variations in the larval burden distribution of Oestrus ovis in sheep in the southwest of Spain.

A chronobiological study of oestrosis was conducted for larval instars of Oestrus ovis from November 2000 to September 2002 with the examination of 477 adult sheep of the southwest region of Spain. Skulls from slaughtered sheep were examined and the different O. ovis larval stages (L1, L2, L3) were recovered from the nasal-sinus cavities. O. ovis larvae were detected in 339 sheep, reaching a prevalence of 71.1%. Only one farm was free of infested sheep indicating a prevalence of the 97.91% among studied flocks. The mean larval burden was 18.54 larvae per infested head during the coldest months

Ophthalmomyiasis interna anterior associated with Cuterebra spp in a cat.

An 8-year-old domestic shorthair cat was examined for severe anterior uveitis of the right eye that was unresponsive to aggressive treatment with anti-inflammatory drugs and for a possible intraocular parasite or foreign body trapped within a large fibrin clot in the anterior chamber. Surgical exploration of a presumed entry site on the caudal aspect of the third eyelid led to keratotomy and removal of a larval parasite later identified as a first instar Cuterebra spp. Aggressive treatment with anti-inflammatory drugs was continued after surgery, and intraocular pressure was monitored closely

[External ophthalmomyiasis by Oestrus ovis from a beach in Var].

In the month of June, a young women on a beach in Hyeres, France, was afflicted by a sudden burning sensation in both eyes. Emergency room examination of the conjunctiva and conjunctival cul-de-sacs revealed the presence of moving organisms 1 mm. The diagnosis was external ophthalmomyiasis. Subsequent investigation of the site of contamination showed that it was located two kilometers from a herd of sheep. The purpose of this report is to underline the possibility of this albeit rare occurrence in France and to review diagnostic and therapeutic methods. In most cases accidental summertime cont…

Scanning electron microscopy of Oestrus ovis larvae (Diptera: Oestridae): skin armour and posterior spiracles.

The skin armour and posterior spiracles of L1, L2 and L3 of Oestrus ovis (Diptera: Oestridae) are described and documented photographically by a scanning electron microscope. The complex and variable morphology of the attack organs of larvae of different stages makes it easier to understand better their exceeding adaptability to the host. The SEM survey has also allowed an apparently unreported anatomic particular with a probable sensory function to be detected in L1.

Field efficacy of the insect growth regulator dicyclanil for flystrike prevention on lambs.

A multi-centered field trial was carried out in the Netherlands to evaluate the efficacy of a ready-to-use 5% dicyclanil formulation as a preventative of natural flystrike on lambs. In four different sites a total of 1215 lambs treated with dicyclanil were compared with 431 untreated lambs during periods of 15 to 16 weeks. Efficacy was assessed by calculating the weekly cumulative strike rate for each site and treatment group and the percentage reduction achieved by dicyclanil. In two of the four sites untreated controls did not receive enough fly challenge and were not considered for efficacy

Parasites of domestic and wild animals in South Africa. XXXV. Ixodid ticks and bot fly larvae in the Bontebok National Park.

Ixodid ticks were collected during February of each year from 1983-1992 from bontebok and grey rhebok in the Bontebok National Park, Western Cape Province. When available other mammals as well as ground-nesting birds and leopard tortoises were examined. Eleven tick species were recovered. Rhipicephalus nitens followed by Rhipicephalus glabroscutatum and an Ixodes sp. (near I. pilosus) were the most abundant, while Amblyomma marmoreum infested the widest host range. The larvae of three bot files were also collected. Gedoelstia sp. and Strobiloestrus sp. larvae were recovered from bontebok and g

Ophthalmomyiasis in Oman: a case report and comments.

A case of external ophthalmomyiasis caused by the first instar larvae of the sheep nasal botfly (Oestrus ovis) has been reported for the first time from the Sultanate of Oman, Southern Arabia. Sixty larvae were removed from the left eye of a 21-year-old male student, who acquired the infection during a field trip. The manual removal of larvae using a swab stick was the only effective treatment. The larval characteristics are described with illustrations, and the status of O ovis ophthalmomyiasis in the Middle East is discussed. The folk treatment administered for fly-mediated ophthalmomyiasis …

Blowfly strike in England and Wales: the relationship between prevalence and farm and management factors.

In order to develop and evaluate control strategies for blowfly strike, a greater understanding of the epidemiology is essential. A postal survey of sheep farmers yielded information about ten farm and management factors and their relationship to blowfly strike prevalence. The risk of a farm reporting at least one case of blowfly strike increased as flock size and stocking density increased (adjusted odds ratio of 1.13 for an increase in flock size of 100 sheep and 1.38 for an increase in stocking density of ten sheep per hectare). As farm altitude increased, the risk of blowfly strike decreas
