Effect of different head-neck positions on physical and psychological stress parameters in the ridden horse.

Different head-neck positions (HNPs) are used in equestrian sports and are regarded as desirable for training and competition by riders, jud … omponents in the frequency domain measurement of HRV which show the activity of the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system. Values were recorded at rest, while riding with a working HNP and while riding with hyperflexion of the horse's head, neck and poll. In addition, rideability and behaviour during the different investigation stages were evaluated by the rider and by …

Reliability of short-term measurement of heart rate variability on rest in individuals with temporomandibular disorder.

Individuals with temporomandibular disorder (TMD) experience autonomic dysfunction, which disrupts the balance between the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems. This imbalance can result in altered heart rate variability (HRV) and other physiological disturbances. However, it is important to note that, to date, no research has investigated the inter- and intra-rater reliability of HRV measurements in individuals with TMD. The objective of this investigation was to analyze the intra- and inter-examiner reliability of HRV captured by a polar heart rate monitor in individuals with TMD.…

Effects of trigeminal nerve stimulation on parameters derived from pulse wave analysis in young healthy subjects.

Studies on trigeminal nerve stimulation (TNS) by facial cooling (FC) could give an insight to physiological mechanisms of cardiovascular response to activation of both parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous systems. We hypothesised that trigeminal nerve stimulation would positively influence on the factors which increase left ventricle work. The aim of the present study was to investigate hemodynamic changes assessed by pulse wave analysis (PWA) in the very early phase of this reflex. In 15 young (aged 20.3±1.3 y/o; mean ±SD) healthy individuals (10 males) PWA was performed before and after 3

Asymmetric multiscale multifractal analysis (AMMA) of heart rate variability.

Objective. The physiological activity of the heart is controlled and modulated mostly by the parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous systems. Heart rate variability (HRV) analysis is therefore used to observe fluctuations that reflect changes in the activity in these two branches. Knowing that acceleration and deceleration patterns in heart rate fluctuations are asymmetrically distributed, the ability to analyze HRV asymmetry was introduced into MMA.Approach. The new method is called asymmetric multiscale multifractal analysis (AMMA) and the analysis involved six groups: 36 healthy persons, 103

Cryolipolysis Does not Modify the Behavior and Recovery of Cardiac Autonomic Modulation.

The desire to reduce and remodel undesirable fatty deposits has increased the popularity and use of aesthetic procedures, among them, cryolipolysis. However, repercussions on the autonomic nervous system must be considered, since the decrease in cutaneous body temperature can have repercussions on sympathetic and parasympathetic components. The aim was to evaluate the behavior of cardiac autonomic modulation during and after a single application of cryolipolysis. A single-arm, prospective interventional study evaluated data from 13 women with a mean age of 22.38 ± 2.95 years, who had an accumu

Linear and nonlinear analyses of normal and fatigue heart rate variability signals for miners in high-altitude and cold areas.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Fatigue is an important cause of operational errors, and human errors are the main cause of accidents. This study is an exploratory study in China. Field tests were conducted on heart rate variability (HRV) parameters and physiological indicators of fatigue among miners in high-altitude, cold and low-oxygen areas. This paper studies heart activity patterns during work fatigue in miners. METHODS: Fatigue affects both the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems, and it is expressed as an abnormal pattern of HRV parameters. Thirty miners were selected as subject…

The effect of thoracosopic thoracic sympathetomy on pulmonary function and bronchial hyperresponsiveness.

BACKGROUND: Endoscopic thoracic sympathectic denervation (ESD) is a procedure used in primary hyperhidrosis and upper extremity ischemia. Bronchial tone is affected by the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems and bronchial asthma is associated with an imbalance between them. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of ESD on pulmonary function and bronchial hyperresponsiveness (BHR). PATIENTS AND METHODS: Fifty-eight patients with primary hyperhidrosis (n = 54) or upper limb ischemia (n = 4) were included. Spirometry and bronchial provocation test with methacholine was per…

Passive transfer of Sjogren's syndrome IgG produces the pathophysiology of overactive bladder.

OBJECTIVE: The presence, in patients with primary and secondary Sjogren's syndrome (SS), of autoantibodies that acutely inhibit M(3) muscarinic receptor (M3R)-mediated bladder contractions is difficult to reconcile with the fact that symptoms of detrusor overactivity and other features of cholinergic hyperresponsiveness occur in this disease. This study was undertaken to examine the in vivo effects of these autoantibodies on bladder function by examining bladder responsiveness and compliance following passive transfer of patient IgG to mice. METHODS: Contractile responses of isolated bladder

Comparison of insulin secretory function in two mouse models with different susceptibility to beta-cell failure.

Type 2 diabetes is characterized by a susceptibility to beta-cell failure. However, subjects at risk of developing type 2 diabetes, such as … was not attributable to insulin resistance (as assessed by the insulin tolerance test) or increased parasympathetic nervous system outflow. Insulin hypersecretion was also demonstrated in vitro. This was associated with higher glycolysis and glucose oxidation, and elevated activity (but not protein levels) of islet glucokinase and hexokinase. Furthermore, GLUT2 protein levels w …

Identifying the Source of a Humoral Factor of Remote (Pre)Conditioning Cardioprotection.

Signalling pathways underlying the phenomenon of remote ischaemic preconditioning (RPc) cardioprotection are not completely understood. The existing evidence agrees that intact sensory innervation of the remote tissue/organ is required for the release into the systemic circulation of preconditioning factor(s) capable of protecting a transplanted or isolated heart. However, the source and molecular identities of these factors remain unknown. Since the efficacy of RPc cardioprotection is critically dependent upon vagal activity and muscarinic mechanisms, we hypothesized that the humoral RPc fact

Heart-rate recovery index is impaired in Behçet's disease.

Behçet's disease, a multisystemic inflammatory disorder, has been associated with a number of cardiovascular dysfunctions, including ventricular arrhythmias and sudden cardiac death. Heart-rate recovery after exercise can provide both an estimate of impaired parasympathetic tone and a prognosis in regard to all-cause and cardiovascular death. The aim of our study was to evaluate heart-rate recovery in Behçet's disease. From January through July 2008, we examined at our outpatient clinic and prospectively enrolled 30 consecutive patients with Behçet's disease and 50 healthy control participants

Parasympathetic effects on cardiac electrophysiology during exercise and recovery.

Depressed parasympathetic tone is associated with an increased risk of sudden cardiac death. Exercise and the postexercise recovery period, which are associated with parasympathetic withdrawal, are high risk periods for sudden death. However, parasympathetic effects on cardiac electrophysiology during exercise and recovery have not been described. Electrophysiology studies were performed using noninvasive programmed stimulation (NIPS) in nine subjects (age 59 +/- 18 yr) with implanted dual-chamber devices and normal left ventricular function during multiple bicycle exercise sessions. NIPS was

Effects of atropine injection on food-associated drinking in rats with superior salivatory nucleus lesions.

The neuropharmacological mechanisms involved in the prandial drinking pattern seen in rats with superior salivatory nucleus lesions + parotidectomy were investigated with behavioral methods. Results showed that the administration of low doses (0.1 mg/kg body wt) of atropine in lesioned rats potentiated previously established prandial drinking. Higher doses of atropine (1.0 mg/kg), however, were required to induce a similar degree of prandiality in control rats (parotidectomy alone). These findings suggest that the salivatory nucleus lesions affected a cholinergic brainstem-salivary gland syste

Age-related decrease of cholinergic parasympathetic reflex vasodilation in the rat masseter muscle.

Skeletal muscle hemodynamics, including that in jaw muscles, is an important in their functions and is modulated by aging. Marked blood flow increases mediated by parasympathetic vasodilation may be important for blood flow in the masseter muscle (MBF); however, the relationship between parasympathetic vasodilation and aging is unclear. We examined the effect of aging on parasympathetic vasodilation evoked by trigeminal afferent inputs and their mechanisms by investigating the MBF during stimulation of the lingual nerve (LN) in young and old urethane-anesthetized and vago-sympathectomized rats

Vagal determinants of exercise capacity.

Indirect measures of cardiac vagal activity are strongly associated with exercise capacity, yet a causal relationship has not been established. Here we show that in rats, genetic silencing of the largest population of brainstem vagal preganglionic neurons residing in the brainstem's dorsal vagal motor nucleus dramatically impairs exercise capacity, while optogenetic recruitment of the same neuronal population enhances cardiac contractility and prolongs exercise endurance. These data provide direct experimental evidence that parasympathetic vagal drive generated by a defined CNS circuit determi

Muscarinic M1 receptor partially modulates higher sensitivity to cadmium-induced cell death in primary basal forebrain cholinergic neurons: A cholinesterase variants dependent mechanism.

Cadmium is a toxic compound reported to produce cognitive dysfunctions, though the mechanisms involved are unknown. In a previous work we described how cadmium blocks cholinergic transmission and induces greater cell death in primary cholinergic neurons from the basal forebrain. It also induces cell death in SN56 cholinergic neurons from the basal forebrain through M1R blockage, alterations in the expression of AChE variants and GSK-3β, and an increase in Aβ and total and phosphorylated Tau protein levels. It was observed that the silencing or blockage of M1R altered ChAT activity, GSK-3β, ACh
