Indicators of Social Competence and Social Participation Among US Children With Tourette Syndrome.

Children with Tourette syndrome often have behavioral and social difficulties, which may be associated with co-occurring mental, emotional, or behavioral disorders. This study investigated social competence, including behavioral problems and social skills, and social activities between children with and without Tourette syndrome using a nationally representative sample. In the 2007 National Survey of Children's Health, parents reported on health care provider diagnosis of Tourette syndrome, co-occurring mental, emotional, or behavioral disorders, and indicators of social competence. Children a

Whole-body 3D kinematics of freely behaving Drosophila.

Understanding how nervous systems generate coordinated movement requires precise measurement of body kinematics during natural behavior. The fruit fly, Drosophila, is a model organism with sophisticated behavior and well-studied neural circuits, but tracking fly movements in 3D remains challenging because of their teeny bodies, rapid movements, and frequent self-occlusions. Here we present a pipeline for markerless, full-body 3D pose estimation of fly terrestrial behavior, combining seven synchronized high-speed cameras to capture whole-body kinematics at 800 frames per second. We trained a hy

Resistance training as a pedagogical strategy in physical education: effects on adolescents' health and lifestyle.

OBJECTIVES: Sedentary behavior constitutes a major public health problem, especially during adolescence, a stage in which it is associated with a higher risk of developing chronic diseases and a decline in quality of life. In this context, schools, and particularly Physical Education classes, play a fundamental role in health promotion. Among possible intervention strategies, resistance training stands out as a promising alternative. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of a resistance training program implemented in Physical Education classes on sedentary behavior, health-related physical

Sociocultural Determinants of Risky Sexual Behaviors among Adult Latinas: A Longitudinal Study of a Community-Based Sample.

Few studies have examined the sociocultural determinants of risky sexual behavior trajectories among adult Latinas. To longitudinally examine the link between sociocultural determinants of risky sexual behaviors, we followed a sample of adult Latina mother-daughter dyads (n = 267) across a 10-year span through four waves of data collection. The present study investigates how risky sexual behavior (operationalized as sex under the influence of alcohol or other drugs, sex without a condom, or multiple sex partners) is affected by: (a) socioeconomic conditions; (b) mental health; (c) medical heal

Contribution of Positivity Ratio and Self-Control to Reduced Gambling Severity among Adolescents.

In the past few years, gambling among adolescents has become a common health risk behavior, one that might lead to other health risk behaviors. Research on the etiology of gambling behavior among adolescents has hitherto focused primarily on the factors contributing to increased gambling severity (GS). The present study is different, in that it examines two key personality components that may help curb GS: self-control (SC) and positivity ratio (PR)--the latter being defined as the positive ratio between positive and negative affects--as factors that predict reduced GS among adolescents. A con

Developmental correlates and predictors of emotional availability in mother-child interaction: a longitudinal study from infancy to middle childhood.

In this investigation we examined the developmental correlates and predictors of maternal emotional availability in interactions with their 7-year-old children among a sample of families at psychosocial risk. We found developmental coherence in maternal interactive behavior, and in the relations between maternal emotional availability and children's functioning in middle childhood. Mothers and children were observed at home and in a laboratory playroom in infancy to assess maternal interactive behavior and child attachment security. When children were 7 years of age, dyads were observed in the

Is a mild deficit in executive functions in boys related to childhood ADHD or to parental multigenerational alcoholism?

A mild deficit in executive functions has been hypothesized to be associated with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), with externalizing problem behaviors such as conduct disorder (CD) and with the vulnerability to alcoholism in sons of multi-generational alcoholics (SOMGAs). These three categories overlap, which raises concerns about the specificity of the hypothesized associations. In the present study, measures of executive functions (EFs) were tested in seventy-six 7- to 11-year-old boys: boys with ADHD but without a family history of addiction, SOMGAs, and controls. Specific …

Early childhood hospitalization and problematic behaviors: A propensity score analysis.

Existing research suggests that children who experience poverty and hospitalization in early childhood are at risk of developing behavior problems. We examined whether the association between early childhood hospitalization and children's internalizing and externalizing behaviors were moderated by family poverty status and child sex. Participants included 224 children from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development Study of Early Child Care and Youth Development. There was no direct association between hospitalization and problematic behaviors. Poverty status during early chi

Fetal growth and neurobehavioral outcomes in childhood.

Using a sample of sibling pairs from a nationally representative U.S. survey, we examine the effects of the fetal growth rate on a set of ne … disruptive behaviors among male children. These results suggest that developmental disabilities and problem behaviors may play a role in explaining the well-documented association between birth weight and human capital outcomes measured in adulthood.

The associations between psychosocial aspects and TMD-pain related aspects in children and adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) in children and adolescents is prevalent with pain as a common component, and has a comorbidity with psychosocial problems such as stress, depression, anxiety as well as somatic complaints. Therefore, the aim of the study was to investigate if psychosocial problems in children and adolescents are associated with TMD with pain (TMD-pain) and TMD without pain (TMD-painfree) when compared to children and adolescents without TMD. METHODS: This cross-sectional study consisted of 456 randomly selected children and adolescents, enrolled from 10 boy's- an

Context-dependent approach and avoidance behavioral profiles as predictors of psychopathology.

Inhibition (a temperamental profile characterized by elevated levels of avoidance behaviors) is associated with increased likelihood for developing anxiety and depression, whereas exuberance (a temperamental profile characterized by elevated levels of approach behaviors) is associated with increased likelihood for developing externalizing conditions (e.g., attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder and conduct disorder). However, not all children who exhibit high levels of approach or avoidance behaviors develop emotional or behavioral problems. In this preregistered study, we assessed context-d

Behavioral phenotypes of pediatric temporal lobe epilepsy.

OBJECTIVE: A broad spectrum of emotional-behavioral problems have been reported in pediatric temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE), but with considerable variability in their presence and nature of expression, which hampers precise identification and treatment. The present study aimed to empirically identify latent patterns or behavioral phenotypes and their correlates. METHODS: Data included parental ratings of emotional-behavioral status on the Behavior Assessment System for Children, 2nd Edition (BASC-2) of 81 children (mean age = 11.79, standard deviation [SD] = 3.93) with TLE. FMR1 Premutation Carrier Mothers' Daily Negative Affect and Cortisol: Probing the Impacts of Stress Exposure, Coping Style, and CGG Repeats.

This study utilized a daily diary methodology to investigate negative affect and cortisol secretion of mothers of adolescents and adults with fragile X syndrome (n = 104). We investigated whether coping style moderated the effects of child behavior problems on daily stress responses for these mothers and whether mothers with varying numbers of CGG repeats differed in the extent to which their coping style impacted daily outcomes. Results indicated that high levels of problem-focused coping buffered the effects of behavior problems on mothers' negative affect and cortisol secretion. There was a

Can't quite commit: rumination and uncertainty.

Why do some individuals persist in self-destructive rumination? Two studies investigated the relation between a ruminative response style and the reluctance to initiate instrumental behavior. In Study 1, ruminators were compared to nonruminators regarding their evaluation of a self-generated plan to revise their university housing system and, in Study 2, concerning their plan to redesign the undergraduate curriculum. In both studies, on relevant composite measures, ruminators expressed less satisfaction and confidence with regard to their plans than did nonruminators. They were also less likel

Effects of maternal mental retardation and poverty on intellectual, academic, and behavioral status of school-age children.

The impact of low maternal IQ and poverty was examined through comparison of 27 school-age children of mothers with mild mental retardation to 25 similarly impoverished children of mothers without mental retardation. The children whose mothers had mental retardation had lower IQs and academic achievement and more behavior problems. Not one child with a mother who had mental retardation was problem-free. Boys were affected more severely than were girls. Quality of the home environment and maternal social supports were lower in the group with maternal mental retardation; both measures were negat

Treated and untreated suicide attempts in substance abuse patients.

Suicidal behavior is a relatively common and serious problem in those with alcohol and drug problems. We compared demographic and clinical characteristics of 123 alcohol rehabilitation patients with and without a history of suicide attempts, using the Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia-Lifetime version. Younger age was significantly related to suicide attempts, as were drug disorders, panic attacks, antisocial symptoms, and alcohol-related problems such as violence, withdrawal symptoms, and personal or occupational loss. Untreated suicide attempts were characterized by less ser

New Insights into the Relation between Cognition, Behavior, and the CHD5 Gene: A Case-Report of an Adult Male with Parenti-Mignot Neurodevelopmental Syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: Parenti-Mignot neurodevelopmental syndrome is caused by pathogenic variants of the CHD5 gene - involved in brain development - and is characterized by developmental delay, intellectual disability, and behavioral disturbances (i.e., autism spectrum disorder or related social problems, obsessive-compulsive tendencies, and aggressive behavior) as well as subtle facial dysmorphisms, epilepsy, hypotonia, and craniosynostosis. To date, cognition, behavior, and psychopathology in patients are either scarcely studied (in children, adolescents, and young adults) or not studied at all. The

Comorbidity of problematic substance use and other addictive behaviors and anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder: a network analysis.

BACKGROUND: Among those with common mental health disorders (e.g. mood, anxiety, and stress disorders), comorbidity of substance and other addictive disorders is prevalent. To simplify the seemingly complex relationships underlying such comorbidity, methods that include multiple measures to distill which specific addictions are uniquely associated with specific mental health disorders rather than due to the co-occurrence of other related addictions or mental health disorders can be used. METHODS: In a general population sample of Jewish adults in Israel (N = 4002), network analysis methods we
