Tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) is the most important arboviral agent causing infections of the central nervous system in central Europe. Previous studies have shown that TBEV exhibits pronounced genetic variability, which is often correlated to the geographical origin of TBEV. Genetic variability of TBEV has previously been studied predominantly in rodents and ticks, while information about the variability in patients is scarce. In order to understand the molecular relationships of TBEV between natural hosts, vectors and humans, as well as correlation between phylogenetic and geographica

Identification of wild animals that harbour the causative leptospires, and the identification of the most important of these 'wild reservoirs' (in terms of threat to human health), are key factors in the epidemiology of human leptospirosis. In an epidemiological investigation in the Australian state of Queensland, in 2007-2008, samples were collected from fruit bats (Pteropus conspicillatus) and rodents (to investigate the potential role of fruit bats in the maintenance and transmission of leptospires to ground-dwelling rodents) and checked for pathogenic leptospires. The results of these stud

AIM: Improvement of PCR for detection of Coxiella burnetii in field material by development of set of primers for amplification of groEL gene fragment.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: C. burnetii strains, samples from organs of wild rodents and laboratory animals, blood of healthy donors and laboratory animals. Methods of DNA isolation, PCR, and electrophoresis in agarose gel were used.
RESULTS: Nucleotide sequences of primers amplifying groEL gene fragment, which could increase specificity of PCR during work with field material were proposed.
CONCLUSION: Obtained data open perspective for using thi

In April 2005, 4 transplant recipients became ill after receiving organs infected with lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus (LCMV); 3 subsequently died. All organs came from a donor who had been exposed to a hamster infected with LCMV. The hamster was traced back through a Rhode Island pet store to a distribution center in Ohio, and more LCMV-infected hamsters were discovered in both. Rodents from the Ohio facility and its parent facility in Arkansas were tested for the same LCMV strain as the 1 involved in the transplant-associated deaths. Phylogenetic analysis of virus sequences linked the rod

The function of the central nervous system (CNS) is in great part depending on glial cells as, for instance, radial glial cells give rise to cortical neurons, and oligodendrocytes synthesize an immense specialized membrane that enwraps axons to make myelin internodes. Myelin allows fast saltatory conduction of action potentials along myelinated nerve tracts and assures the survival of axons. Oligodendrocytes precursors (OP) emerge during development, first in the spinal cord and later in the telencephalon from multipotential neural precursors in germinative zones around the cerebral ventricles

The geographic/temporal pattern of cases of tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) registered in the Czech Republic since 1970 was analysed to verify the surmise of a global warming effect. Using a geographic information system, over 8,700 notified places of infection were pin-pointed on a map and overlaid with a digital elevation model to estimate the vertical distribution of the cases. Series of yearly disease ceilings (assessed alternatively as the respective maximum altitude or mean altitudes of the upper 5 or 10 cases) were tested against the null hypothesis of random elevation course and analysed

Bionomics of fleas (Siphonaptera) parasitizing rodent hosts, mostly the gerbil Gerbillus dasyurus (Wagner) and the jird Meriones crassus Sundevall (Gerbillidae), were investigated in the central Negev desert of Israel. Populations were sampled weekly (by Sherman trapping of hosts) from August 2000 to July 2001. Among 1055 fleas of nine species captured, four species predominated (94%). Two species of Pulicidae, Xenopsylla dipodilli Smit and X. ramesis (Rothschild), reproduced perennially, whereas adults of Nosopsyllus iranus theodori Smit (Ceratophyllidae) and Stenoponia tripectinata medialis

Survey of the circulation and spread of causative agents of the infection among wild rodents may predict the activation of an epizootic process and the aggravation of an epidemic situation. The status of a combined focus of leptospirosis and hantavirus infection in the Primorye Territory was studied. It was found that mixed infection may run in pocket mice (Phascogalinae) under natural conditions.

Prevalence and abundance of Cryptosporodium parvum and Giardia spp. were studied in 3 species of rodents from forests and abandoned agricultural fields in N.E. Poland (Clethrionomys glareolus n = 459; Microtus arvalis n = 274; Apodemus flavicollis n = 209). Overall prevalence was consistently higher in the voles compared with A. flavicollis (70.6, 73.0 and 27.8% respectively for C. parvum and 93.9, 96.3 and 48.3% respectively for Giardia spp.). Prevalence and abundance of infection also varied markedly across 3 years with 1998 being a year of higher prevalence and abundance with both species.

Experimental infections of Lymaea truncatula, using two susceptible snail populations (Berneuil, or Migné, central France) and four isolates of Fasciola hepatica miracidia differing in their mammalian host of origin (cattle, nutrias, rabbits, or sheep), were performed under laboratory conditions to determine whether the host of origin had an effect on the daily production of cercariae. Snails were each subjected to bimiracidial exposures and were then reared under semi-natural conditions (a constant temperature of 20 degrees C and natural photoperiod). Significantly lower values were noted in

An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for the detection of IgG antibodies in rodents was developed and validated with the microscopic agglutination test (MAT) and leptospiral cultures. Sonicated antigen from cultures of serovars tarassovi and pyrogenes was used. As conjugate, a combination of anti-rat and anti-hamster IgG labeled with peroxidase was used. The optimal cut-off point was determined by plotting the sensitivity and specificity for various cut-off point values by means of receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve. Concordance between ELISA and each of the MAT titers was m

To investigate the prevalence of Lyme disease infection in Taiwan, we conducted a zoonotic survey for spirochetal infection in the small mammals. Ear tissues of trapped rodents collected from various localities in Taiwan were incubated into BSK-H culture medium and examined for the evidence of spirochetal infection by dark-field microscopy. Spirochetes cultured from six species of wild and peridomestic rodents and seven isolates, designated TWKM 1-7, were purified by serial dilution and membrane filtration. Infection was detected in 16.6% (53 of 320) of captured rodents and the highest infecti

Surveys on Trichinella parasites in domestic and sylvatic animals collected in France, Italy, and in the Extremadura region of Spain showed that the distribution of Trichinella spiralis and Trichinella britovi is influenced by both environmental and human behaviour factors. In France, both Trichinella species are prevalent in the fox population from mountain areas and natural parks but are infrequent in wild boars (< 0.001%). In Italy, only T. britovi is present in sylvatic animals (foxes, wolves, and mustelids) living 500 m above sea level. This species is rare in wild boars (< 0.001%) in tha

Azoxymethane (AOM) is commonly used in colon carcinogenesis studies in rodents. In an attempt to develop a large animal model of human colon cancer, AOM was given to Hanford-Moore miniature pigs. Six pigs were injected intraperitoneally with a single dose of AOM of either 5, 10, 20, 40 or 55 mg per kg body weight. Within 48 h, severe signs of toxicity and death occurred in animals receiving greater than 20 mg per kg AOM. After 30 days, all surviving animals were killed and necropsied. Acute hepatic necrosis with haemorrhage was the major toxic effect of AOM in all animals receiving doses excee
