Arthritis developed in two patients during the course of parasite infestation with Strongyloides stercoralis and Taenia saginata, respectively. The joint involvement was polyarticular and symmetrical but seronegative and nonerosive radiologically. We found evidence of abnormal humoral immunity to the parasites, immune complexes in serum and synovial fluid, and immunoglobulin deposits in the synovia. Infective larvae of homogonic Strongyloides ratti grown in faecal culture with 32P or 75Se acquired a significant amount of radioactivity which was firmly attached to them. Heating removed most of the 32P but left 75Se in place. Clinical and laboratory details of thirteen infants with "Swollen Belly Sickness" who has abdominal distension, respiratory distress, generalised oedema, and variable disturbance of gastrointestinal function were analysed. The intimate connection between the syndrome and infection with Strongyloides species closely resembling Strongyloides fulleborni - is discussed, and a standard treatment using thiabendazole, plasma transfusion and antibiotics, is proposed.

Experimental infections using 600,000 infective larvae of Strongyloides westeri were carried out in seven worm-free Shetland ponies, four foals and thee yearlings. Four years after Picot's experiments on parasitic diseases in Réunion Island, and after a large sanitation campaign, the authors valued the effect of this campaign on parasitic incidence. They showed that it had significantly decreased. In lactating females of many animal species infested by Nematoda, the self-cure is, if not suppressed, at least very distinctly delayed. It does not appear that an immunological deficiency is the cause of this. We show that this phenomenon also exists in lactating female rats with Strongyloides ratti parasites. The survey was done to determine the incidence and seasonal prevalence of the gastrointestinal helminths infecting Maine dairy cattle. Approximately equal groups of calves, heifers, and cows from 13 dairy farms, managerially and geographically representative of dairying in the state, were sampled at regular 2-month intervals over the period of a year. Human intestinal nematodes, all of which can be acquired in the continental United States, can cause a variety of ills including iron deficiency anemia, surgical emergencies, eosinophilic pneumonia, malabsorption, dysentery, myositis, and death. The severity of illness is related to the number of parasites acquired exogenously or the ability of the parasite to multiply within the host. Diagnosis of clinically significant infection can usually be made by stool examination, and appropriate treatment requires an understanding of the life-span and pathogenic potential of the parasite.
