OBJECTIVES: In recent years, periodontitis, and dental caries have become common in humans and need to be diagnosed in the early stage to prevent severe complications and tooth loss. These dental issues are diagnosed by visual inspection, measuring pocket probing depth, and radiographs findings from experienced dentists. Though a glut of machine learning (ML) algorithms has been proposed for the automated detection of periodontitis, and dental caries, determining which ML techniques are suitable for clinical practice remains under debate. This review aims to identify the research challenges by

INTRODUCTION: Dens evaginatus (DE) is a dental anomaly with a supernumerary tubercle projection that typically contains dentin and pulp tissue. However, the tubercle projection can fracture, exposing the dentin and potentially the dental pulp, which induces pulpal diseases. Managing DE should be primarily based on the clinical diagnosis of the pulp.
METHODS: The literature search in prevalence, prophylaxis, and management of dens evaginatus was performed in PubMed database as well as by manual search, in which the related contents were collected and descriptively analyzed.
RESULTS: Of the 26

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effect of layering technique and cavity dimension on the fatigue behavior and marginal adaptation of bulk fill (BF) restorations in extensively damaged teeth.
METHODS: Seventy-two premolars received class II cavities (MOD) followed by endodontic treatment. Half sample had 1/3 of their palatal cusp removed. Teeth were restored using three techniques: (I) incremental, with conventional resin composite (RC); (C) combined, using BF flow and RC, (B) bulk fill, with regular BF. Specimens were subjected to fatigue (80 N, 2 Hz, 37° C water) for 1 million cycles (n = 12). T

PURPOSE: While the objective of partial pulpotomy is to preserve the vitality and function of the pulp tissue, the preopera-tive pulp status is the main prognostic factor for its success. To date, however, there is little data on long-term success rates. Therefore, the aim of this prospective pilot study was to assess the long-term outcome of partial pulpotomy in per-manent teeth after carious pulp exposure without signs or symptoms of irreversible pulpitis, verified clinically, radio-graphically, and via MMP-9 levels.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients in whom permanent teeth with extremely dee

BACKGROUND: Treatment modalities of odontogenic cystic lesions of the jaws range from conservative to radical. "Dredging" may be considered the "middle path" between conservative and radical treatment options. It comprises three entities-decompression, followed by repeated scraping of the lesion, and finally, peripheral ostectomy providing margin clearance but without significant morbidity.
AIM: To evaluate the outcome of "dredging" in the management of large cystic lesions of the jaws, without major resections and maintaining normal functions.
METHODOLOGY: This prospective study was conduct

BACKGROUND/AIM: Due to the increase in incarceration rates, the prison community has attracted much concern in the recent past. Although people in prison are often socially disadvantaged and vulnerable to a range of health problems, there is a lack of information on the oral health conditions of prisoners. Thus, the aim of this study was to survey the oral problems of a sample of the male incarcerated population of Brazil, focusing on dental trauma.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The research was undertaken over a three-month period in 2017. It was a cross-sectional study of 756 prisoners of the Curad

The aim of this in vitro study was to estimate the effect of the species concentration of 45S5 bioactive glass (BAG) used as pretreatment on the microshear bond strength (MSBS) of dental fluorosis (DF). Based on the Thylstrup and Fejerskov index, 80 teeth were randomly divided equally into four groups: TFI 0, sound dentin; TFI 1-3, mild fluorosis; TFI 4-5, moderate fluorosis; and TFI 6-9, severe fluorosis. Each group was randomized into five subgroups. After preparing the dentin hypersensitivity model of DF, the dentin was pretreated as follows, Subgroup 1: deionized water (Control group); Sub

BACKGROUND: Immunomodulatory properties of bisphosphonates (BP) are suggested to contribute to the development of medication-associated osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ). Furthermore, bisphosphonate-derived immune modulation might contribute to the anti-metastatic effect observed in breast cancer patients. Macrophages are potential candidates for the mediation of immunomodulatory effects of bisphosphonates. The study aimed to investigate the influence of bisphosphonates alone and in combination with surgical trauma on systemic macrophage polarization (M1 vs. M2) using an in vivo rat model.

INTRODUCTION: Gunshot injuries to the oral maxillofacial region have serious aesthetic and functional consequences.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 32-year-old male patient presented with a marginal mandibular resection owing to a gunshot wound. A clinical examination revealed destroyed crowns in teeth 12, 11, and 21; extraction in teeth 13, 22, 24, 31, 32-45; a fracture in tooth 38; and severe pain. Further, he had multiple submental scars and a completely obliterated sulcus. Consequently, a multidisciplinary team was formed who devised the following treatment plan: stage 1, root canal treatment for

The scaffolds, which morphologically and physiologically mimic natural features of the bone, are of high demand for regenerative medicine. To address this challenge, we have developed innovative bioactive porous silicon- wollastonite substrates for bone tissue engineering. Additive manufacturing through selective laser melting approach has been exploited to fabricate scaffolds of different architecture. Unique material combining osteoinductivity, osteoconductivity and bioactive elements allows flexibility in design. As the porous structure is required for the ingrowth of the bone tissue, the C

PURPOSE: The objective of medical content-based image retrieval (CBIR) is to assist clinicians in decision making by retrieving the most similar cases to a given query image from a large database. Herein, a new method for content-based image retrieval of cone beam CT (CBCT) scans is presented.
METHODS: The introduced framework consists of two main phases: training database construction and querying. The goal of the training phase is database construction, which consists of three main steps. First, automatic segmentation of lesions using 3D symmetry analysis is performed. Embedding the prior s

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: When implants are incorporated into an existing partial removable dental prosthesis, the acrylic resin base can fracture. It is therefore essential to study the mechanical behavior of partial removable dental prostheses by using stress and deformation analysis.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of the occlusal rest position on the implant-assisted partial removable dental prosthesis by finite element analysis.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A Faro Arm scan was used to extract the geometrical data of a human partially edentulous mandible. A standard plu

INTRODUCTION: The absence of maxillary lateral incisors caused by traumatic or genetic reasons or as a result of endodontic failure is a difficult problem for an implantologist. The difficulties are the result of bone deficiency in all three dimensions, irregularity of interdental papillae locations and often convergence of roots of the neighbouring teeth. The aim of this study was to present the complexity of orthodontic and implant-prosthetic treatment of the absence of maxillary lateral incisors.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Between 2003 and 2007, 11 patients with absence of maxillary lateral inc

BACKGROUND: Polymerisation shrinkage is a critical limitation of dental composites and may contribute to microleakage, postoperative pain, tooth fracture, and secondary caries. It has been shown that curing methods play a significant role in polymerisation shrinkage of light-cured dental resins. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of a LED curing light on microleakage as well as microhardness of a dental composite.
METHOD: For the microleakage test 32 Class V cavities were prepared in human premolars, conditioned with 35% phosphoric acid and treated with the bonding agent

Full-mouth extraction and replacement are usually staged, and the sequence may leave mobile anterior teeth in service for months before their planned removal-an interval calling for stabilization that is quick, well-tolerated, and appropriate for teeth shortly to be extracted. Two such intervals were managed with an incisal-third tunnel splint (ITTS): a shallow tunnel cut within the incisal third of the mandibular anterior teeth, receiving a passive stainless-steel wire enclosed with composite resin. Siting it there rather than lingually places the restoration away from the gingival third and
