Ultrabright Quasi-Compact Quantum Dot Assembly for Sensitive and Color-Fixed Immunoassays.

Home-based immunoassay platforms constitute critical tools for the rapid screening of infectious respiratory viruses. Notably, viral loads can remain low at certain stages yet vary over several orders of magnitude during infection, and such variations are closely associated with the disease progression and transmission potential. This self-testing demand necessitates diagnostic kits that combine high sensitivity with accurate human-vision discriminability and portable terminal quantification across the entire detectable range. In response, an ultrabright label was fabricated via template-confi

Whole exome sequencing unveils novel pathogenic variants in an Iranian cohort with retinal dystrophies: Implications for genetic diagnosis and counseling.

BACKGROUND: Retinal dystrophies (RD) are a heterogeneous group of genetic disorders leading to progressive vision loss. The notable gap in the genetics of RD is primarily due to unidentified disease genes and variants. Advanced genotyping technologies present significant opportunities for the identification of causative variants, thereby contributing to improved disease management. METHODS: This study investigates the genetic basis of RD in 12 families from Iran. Comprehensive ophthalmic evaluations were conducted for each participant, including visual acuity testing, slit-lamp examinations,

Comparative evaluation of tabular-to-image deep learning pipelines for EEG-based epileptic seizure recognition: A comprehensive benchmark with statistical analysis and explainable AI.

Epilepsy affects roughly 50 million people worldwide and is diagnosed primarily through electroencephalography (EEG), yet the manual review on which this diagnosis depends remains slow, subjective, and inconsistent across readers. A rapidly expanding literature reframes EEG signals as two-dimensional images, allowing ImageNet-pretrained vision backbones to be repurposed for seizure recognition via transfer learning, but no prior work has disentangled the competing tabular-to-image encodings from the choice of architectural family, nor characterized their joint behavior within a single leakage-

DINOv2-Pretrained Vision Transformers for Stroke and Heart Failure Detection from Chest X-rays with Limited Labeled Data.

Cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases are leading causes of death worldwide, motivating scalable, noninvasive screening approaches. Chest X-rays (CXRs) are widely available, but current deep learning methods rely on large labeled datasets that are costly to obtain in clinical practice. We propose a three-stage framework that combines DINOv2 self-supervised learning with vision transformers (ViTs) to detect stroke and heart failure from CXRs under limited labeled data. A ViT-Small/14 backbone is first initialized with DINOv2 weights pretrained on LVD-142M dataset and then further adapted

The Use of Combined Fundus Photography and Perimetry for the Assessment of Patients Referred for Intracranial Hypertension or Follow-Up of the Diagnosis in a Tertiary Headache Center.

OBJECTIVES: Idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH) is characterized by increased intracranial pressure and papilledema. If left untreated, it can lead to vision loss, and, timely detection of papilledema is of paramount importance. Direct ophthalmoscopy can be difficult to perform and interpret for non-ophthalmologists. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the impact of combined fundus photography and perimetry (CFPP) on patients with suspicion of new-onset IIH or IIH follow-up. METHOD: The study was based on a cross-sectional, retrospective chart review of all patients who underwen

How to treat cardiovascular autonomic failure in Parkinson's disease.

Cardiovascular autonomic failure is a frequent non-motor feature of Parkinson's disease (PD) that affects up to one third of individuals from the premotor to the advanced stages of the disease, with major diagnostic, therapeutic and prognostic implications. It may manifest with orthostatic, post-prandial or exercise-induced hypotension, as well as hypertensive episodes in the supine position during wakefulness or nocturnal sleep. Hypotensive episodes may remain asymptomatic or manifest with symptoms of end-organ hypoperfusion in the upright position, after meals or during exertion that may inc

Using Optical Coherence Tomography in Pediatric Neuro-ophthalmology.

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) has transformed adult neuro-ophthalmology, but pediatric adoption has lagged because of perceived technical, financial, and practical barriers. This chapter provides a pragmatic framework for integrating OCT into pediatric and pediatric neuro-ophthalmology clinics, emphasizing how to obtain reliable images in awake children and how to interpret them. We first review technical aspects of tabletop and handheld OCT in children, including positioning, fixation strategies, and when to prioritize single-line macular or optic nerve head B-scans over full segmented p

Risk factors and critical thresholds for glucocorticoid-induced ocular adverse reactions in children: implications for muscle and neuromuscular disease management.

Systemic Glucocorticoid (GC) therapy is integral to managing various paediatric conditions, including inflammatory muscle and neuromuscular diseases. However, prolonged GC use in children poses a significant risk for severe ocular Adverse Drug Reactions (ADRs), notably Posterior Subcapsular Cataract (PSCC) and Steroid-Induced Ocular Hypertension (SIOH). These ADRs can lead to irreversible visual impairment, creating a substantial burden, particularly for paediatric patients already managing chronic conditions. Identifying specific risk factors and precise exposure thresholds is crucial for opt

Unveiling the hidden link: diabetes mellitus as a catalyst for orbital apex syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Orbital Apex Syndrome (OAS) is a disease of multiple brain nerves at the orbital apex leading to vision loss and neurological impairments. Diabetes Mellitus (DM), a metabolic disorder with cardiovascular, immunological and neurological effects, is involved in OAS pathogenesis. However, the association between DM and OAS is not well studied. DM and OAS are poorly understood and may not be diagnosed correctly, especially when outbreaks such as COVID-19 are being investigated. METHODS: A systematic review of 33 studies published between 2000 and 2025 was conducted to analyze DM-relat

The Hidden Risk of Toxoplasmosis in the Expanding Immunomodulated Host Population: A Call for Guidelines and Registries in Patients on Biologics, Small Molecules, and Cellular Therapies.

Targeted immunotherapies with biologics, small molecules, and CAR T-cell therapies have revolutionized treatment across autoimmune, chronic inflammatory, oncologic, and transplant-related conditions. However, they have also expanded the population of patients susceptible to opportunistic infections. Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii), a globally prevalent parasite, has emerged as an underrecognized pathogen in this immunomodulated host population. Toxoplasmosis, in such patients, can occur either through reactivation of a chronic/latent/past infection or from an acute/primary infection and may be s

Multimodal Learning with Privileged Report Supervision for Generalizable Tuberculosis Detection on Chest Radiographs.

Multimodal learning using images and associated clinical text offers richer semantic supervision for medical AI. However, models trained with synthetic reports risk hallucination, and conventional multimodal tuberculosis (TB) systems are impractical because they require text at inference. In realworld screening workflows, particularly in low-resource settings or during triage, radiology reports are often unavailable or delayed. Computer-aided detection systems for chest X-rays (CXRs) are considered a potential solution. In this context, this study proposes a method that uses clinically grounde
