Hippocampal Functions Modulate Transfer-Appropriate Cortical Representations Supporting Subsequent Memory.

The hippocampus plays a central role as a coordinate system or index of information stored in neocortical loci. Nonetheless, it remains unclear how hippocampal processes integrate with cortical information to facilitate successful memory encoding. Thus, the goal of the current study was to identify specific hippocampal-cortical interactions that support object encoding. We collected fMRI data while 19 human participants (7 female and 12 male) encoded images of real-world objects and tested their memory for object concepts and image exemplars (i.e., conceptual and perceptual memory). Representa

Behavioral State-Dependent Modulation of Prefrontal Cortex Activity by Respiration.

Respiration-rhythmic oscillations in the local field potential emerge in the mPFC, a cortical region with a key role in the regulation of cognitive and emotional behavior. Respiration-driven rhythms coordinate local activity by entraining fast γ oscillations as well as single-unit discharges. To what extent respiration entrainment differently engages the mPFC network in a behavioral state-dependent manner, however, is not known. Here, we compared the respiration entrainment of mouse PFC local field potential and spiking activity (23 male and 2 female mice) across distinct behavioral states: du

Persisting Effects of Ayahuasca on Empathy, Creative Thinking, Decentering, Personality, and Well-Being.

Background: Naturalistic and placebo-controlled studies have suggested that ayahuasca, a traditional Amazonian beverage, could be helpful in the treatment of psychopathologies like depression and anxiety disorders by changing otherwise disturbed cognitive and emotional processes. To better understand its full therapeutic potential, one way is to study the effects on processes like flexible thinking, empathy, and well-being, which are normally compromised in stress-related psychopathologies. Materials and Methods: Volunteers attending ayahuasca ceremonies were asked to complete a test battery a

The effect of frontoparietal paired associative stimulation on decision-making and working memory.

Previous single-site neurostimulation experiments have unsuccessfully attempted to shift decision-making away from habitual control, a fast, inflexible cognitive strategy, towards goal-directed control, a flexible, though computationally expensive strategy. We employed a dual-target neurostimulation approach in 30 healthy participants, using cortico-cortical paired associative stimulation (ccPAS) to target two key nodes: lateral prefrontal cortex (LPFC) and intraparietal sulcus (IPS), to test whether decision-making can be artificially shifted from habitual toward goal-directed control. Partic

Early Stroke Induces Long-Term Impairment of Adult Neurogenesis Accompanied by Hippocampal-Mediated Cognitive Decline.

Stroke increases neurogenesis in the adult dentate gyrus in the short term, however, long-term effects at the cellular and functional level are poorly understood. Here we evaluated the impact of an early stroke lesion on neurogenesis and cognitive function of the aging brain. We hypothesized that a stroke disturbs dentate neurogenesis during aging correlate with impaired flexible learning. To address this issue a stroke was induced in 3-month-old C57Bl/6 mice by a middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO). To verify long-term changes of adult neurogenesis the thymidine analogue BrdU (5-Bromo-2'-

The Efficacy of Vortioxetine on Anhedonia in Patients With Major Depressive Disorder.

Background: Anhedonia is a common, persistent, and disabling phenomenon in treated adults with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). Hitherto, relatively few antidepressant agents have been evaluated with respect to their effect on anhedonia in MDD. Methods: This is a post-hoc analysis of a primary study that sought to evaluate the sensitivity to change of the THINC-integrated tool (THINC-it) in MDD (ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT03053362). Adults meeting DSM-5 criteria for MDD with at least moderate depressive symptom severity [i.e., Montgomery Åsberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS) total scor

Client and therapist experiences with the Processing of Positive Memories Technique (PPMT) in a randomized controlled trial: insights for protocol refinement.

Background: The Processing of Positive Memories Technique (PPMT) is a brief, memory-based intervention designed to enhance access to detailed positive autobiographical memories (AMs) in individuals with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Although research suggests that PPMT is feasible and may reduce PTSD symptoms, little is known about client and therapist experiences with PPMT when delivered to individuals with diagnostic PTSD.Objective: In a pilot randomised controlled trial, PPMT was compared to Supportive Counseling. PEEC: The Protected Entities Ethics Checklist for Collecting Speech Data From Vulnerable Clinical Populations.

PURPOSE: The rapid advancement of automatic speech recognition (ASR) and natural language processing technologies has created significant opportunities for clinical applications within speech and language disorders, yet these capabilities remain largely confined to high-resource languages and populations. As research communities work to address these inequities through inclusive speech data collection, the intersection of clinical vulnerability, linguistic diversity, and emerging speech and language technologies creates ethical considerations that are rarely addressed by existing guidelines. Parent- and child-reported executive functioning and response to psychotherapy in pediatric obsessive-compulsive disorder: Results from the TECTO study.

UNLABELLED: Executive function (EF) difficulties in pediatric obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) are suggested to interact with psychotherapy response. We investigated the role of parent- and self-rated EF in a randomized trial comparing cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and psychoeducation with relaxation training (PRT). We investigated the extent to which: (1) EF difficulties are evident in non-medicated pediatric OCD patients; (2) difficulties improve during psychotherapy; and (3) EF moderates symptom alleviation. We included 114 patients with OCD (aged 8–17 years), who received 14 sessio

Cultural fiction as predictive-affective simulation: a neurocognitive model of male emotional regulation and gender violence prevention.

This conceptual article develops an integrative framework connecting the Tie-Up Theory of affective receptivity with predictive processing models of brain function, in order to advance a neurocognitive understanding of the emotional mechanisms underlying gender-based violence and its prevention. Departing from the observation that feminicide cannot be explained solely through sociological or ideological variables, the paper focuses on its emotional and predictive precursors, particularly the inability to tolerate frustration, rejection, or loss without attempting to restore control. Drawing on

Mechanistic Integration of Beta-Alanine-Carnosine Buffering and Glutamine Metabolism in Exercise-Induced Muscle-Brain Crosstalk: Implications for Aging, Neurodegeneration, and Cognitive Decline.

Aging is marked by a gradual deterioration in muscular performance, cognitive abilities, and metabolic flexibility, phenomena that are intricately linked through the muscle-brain axis. Recent research indicates that particular amino acids, notably beta-alanine (BA) and glutamine, may not function in isolation but instead converge mechanistically to modulate this axis through synergistic influences on intracellular pH regulation, nitrogen metabolism, and redox equilibrium. BA, through its involvement in the biosynthesis of carnosine, augments intracellular buffering capacity and maintains pH st

Differential amyloid-beta sensitivity across human and nonhuman primate neurons.

The human brain has undergone a threefold increase in size as well as changes in cytoarchitecture and neurochemical organization since the split with the last common ancestor with chimpanzees and bonobos. These changes have likely promoted increased cognitive flexibility but may also have come at the cost of increased vulnerability to neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's disease (AD). Alzheimer's disease is the most common form of age-dependent dementia, and previous research suggests that humans may be uniquely vulnerable to AD. Primate comparative induced pluripotent stem cell models …

When Words Fail: Investigating Alexithymia And Coping Strategies In Adolescent Mental Health.

Introduction: Alexithymia, defined by difficulty identifying and verbalizing emotions, has emerged as a significant factor influencing emotional regulation and coping behaviors in youth. Adolescents with high levels of alexithymia may be at greater risk of psychological distress due to maladaptive coping mechanisms and reduced social support engagement. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted among 141 high school students aged 15-18 in Skopje, North Macedonia. Participants completed validated instruments including the Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20) and the Adolesce

A Novel Transdiagnostic Approach to the Prevention of Eating Disorders Using Virtual Reality: Preliminary Evaluation of the H.O.M.E. Intervention.

"Virtual reality" (VR) has been used effectively in clinical psychology to improve existing treatments and prevention protocols for many psychopathologies, including eating disorders (EDs). However, no VR software was developed to concurrently tackle dysfunctional eating behaviours and three third wave cognitive-behavioural transdiagnostic factors linked to EDs: psychological inflexibility, emotion dysregulation and experiential avoidance. This preliminary study is aimed at evaluating potential effects of a new VR-based preventive intervention (H.O.M.E.-How to Observe and Modify Emotions) in i

Effects of self-similarity and self-generation on the perceptual prioritization of voices.

The self-prioritization effect (SPE) reflects the ability to efficiently discern self-relevant information. The self-voice emerges as a crucial identity marker because of its inherent self-relevance, and previous work has demonstrated the perceptual and cognitive advantages of the self-voice over other voices. Yet, the extent to which humans prioritize their self-voice when they hear it is because it is both self-similar ("That sounds like my voice") and self-generated ("I said that") remains understudied. Here, we examined the impacts of self-similarity and self-generation on the SPE through

Cyclooxygenase 2 (COX-2) expression is elevated in prefrontal cortex neurons, not microglia, following methamphetamine self-administration in male and female rats.

Methamphetamine (METH) use produces lasting elevations in peripheral and central inflammation that correspond to cognitive and behavioral deficits, which may contribute to the likelihood of relapse. Though a great deal of research over the last few decades has attempted to investigate pharmacotherapies to help facilitate long term abstinence from METH, there are still no FDA approved medications to treat METH use disorders. Our laboratory recently showed that markers of neuroinflammation persist three weeks into abstinence following prolonged (96 h/week for 3 weeks) access to METH self-adminis

Using Electroencephalogram-Extracted Nonlinear Complexity and Wavelet-Extracted Power Rhythm Features during the Performance of Demanding Cognitive Tasks (Aristotle's Syllogisms) in Optimally Classifying Patients with Anorexia Nervosa.

Anorexia nervosa is associated with impaired cognitive flexibility and central coherence, i.e., the ability to provide an overview of complex information. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to evaluate EEG features elicited from patients with anorexia nervosa and healthy controls during mental tasks (valid and invalid Aristotelian syllogisms and paradoxes). Particularly, we examined the combination of the most significant syllogisms with selected features (relative power of the time-frequency domain and wavelet-estimated EEG-specific waves, Higuchi fractal dimension (HFD), and informa…
