Single nucleotide substitution in the CsDET2 gene leads to complex alterations in plant architecture and affects brassinosteroid profile in cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.)0.

Most cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) cultivars are characterized by indeterminate and vigorous growth, which requires a large cultivation area and increased labor for crop maintenance. Manipulating plant architecture may help optimize cucumber production in certain cultivation systems. The objective of this study was to identify the gene associated with phenotypic changes of the short petiole-2 (sp-2) mutant, which was discovered from EI (ethylenimine)-induced mutagenesis population. The line carrying the sp-2 gene was characterized by dwarf growth and dark-green wrinkled leaves with short petio

Nonlinear maize yield responses to drought drive escalating regional vulnerabilities under climate change in China.

Drought poses a growing threat to global maize production, with risks projected to intensify under climate change. However, comprehensive, long-term quantification of crop yield responses to drought, particularly their nonlinear across diverse environments, remains limited. Here, we combined generalized additive models and threshold regression to unveil the critical role of Vapor Pressure Deficit (VPD) in determining maize yields in China from 1981 to 2020. Our results demonstrate that yield responses to VPD are strictly nonlinear, governed by distinct regional thresholds: 0.82 kPa in the Nort

Bacillus sp. Z26 suppresses Alternaria alternata and its mycotoxins by targeting AaPex13-mediated peroxisome biogenesis.

Alternaria alternata is a destructive postharvest pathogen that causes fruit decay and produces multiple mycotoxins, including alternariol (AOH), alternariol monomethyl ether (AME), and tenuazonic acid (TeA), posing a serious threat to crop quality and food safety. Biocontrol stands out as a promising strategy to mitigate both fungal infection and mycotoxin production. This study investigated that Bacillus sp. Z26 effectively inhibits the mycelial growth and mycotoxin accumulation of A. alternata. Comparative transcriptomic analysis revealed that strain Z26 did not directly repress canonical m

Comprehensive Evaluation of the Physiological Responses and Cold Tolerance of Annual Shoots from Different Sweet Cherry (Prunus avium L.) Cultivars Under Low-Temperature Stress.

Sweet cherry (Prunus avium L.) is a high-value horticultural crop; however, winter freezing injury significantly limits its introduction and stable production in cold-temperate regions. In this study, annual shoots of 16 major sweet cherry cultivars were collected during the dormancy phase and subjected to a simulated low-temperature gradient. Eight physiological indicators, namely, relative electrolyte conductivity (REC), malondialdehyde (MDA) content, osmoregulatory substances, and antioxidant enzyme activities, were systematically measured along with the poststress recovery growth percentag

Climate Change Impacts on Plant-Parasitic Nematodes in Agroecosystems.

Climate change significantly impacts agricultural ecosystems through rising temperatures, changing precipitation patterns, increasing atmospheric CO2 levels, and more frequent extreme weather events. These environmental changes have a pronounced effect on plant-parasitic nematodes (PPNs; phylum Nematoda), which cause serious crop losses on a global scale. This review aims to provide a comprehensive evaluation of current knowledge on how major climate change drivers influence the biology, population dynamics, host-plant interactions, and geographic distribution of PPNs in agricultural systems.

Long-Term Biochar Application Enhances Peanut Yield by Delaying Leaf Senescence and Optimizing Nutrient Balance.

Premature leaf senescence during the late growth stage of Arachis hypogaea (peanut) reduces photosynthetic capacity and restricts pod filling, thereby limiting yield. Although biochar has been widely used for soil improvement due to its porous structure and stability, its long-term effects on sustaining photosynthetic performance and improving yield through nutrient regulation remain insufficiently understood. Based on a long-term field micro-plot experiment established in 2009, four fertilization treatments were evaluated: maize straw return + NPK (CS), pig manure compost + NPK (PMC), biochar

Dietary Practices and Associated Factors Among Lactating Mothers in Sodo Zuriya District, Southern Ethiopia: A Community-Based Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Poor dietary practices among lactating mothers can induce metabolic disturbances in infants early in life, particularly those related to nutrition, which result in irreversible physiologic changes. Although maternal nutrition is widely studied, few studies have focused on the dietary practices against the WHO/FAO recommendations for additional meal intake during lactation. This study aims to assess dietary practices and associated factors among lactating mothers based on recommended additional meal intake in the Sodo Zuriya district, South Ethiopia. METHODS: A community-based cros

Taxonomic diversity in the global wheat phyllosphere mycobiome - a meta analysis.

Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) is a major crop grown on all continents. Due to environmental concerns, it is desirable to reduce the inputs of both chemical pesticides and inorganic fertilizers. However, yield reduction must be expected when switching to low-input systems. To mitigate such losses, the use of natural or introduced microbiomes may provide the key to maintaining sustainable yield. Phyllosphere fungi, both endophytic and phylloplane-associated, colonize aboveground plant structures, some of which have the potential to mitigate biotic and abiotic stressors. A first step toward realiz
