Prevalence, Clinic-Etiological Spectrum and Outcome of Pediatric Metabolic Epilepsy - A Single Centre Experience.

INTRODUCTION: Inborn errors of metabolism (IEM) are a rare cause of epilepsy in pediatric age group. Prompt diagnosis is essential, as some of these disorders are treatable. AIM: To determine the prevalence, clinical, and etiological profile of metabolic epilepsy in children. METHODS: A prospective observational study of children with new onset seizures diagnosed as inherited metabolic disorder in a tertiary care hospital, South India. RESULTS: Among 10,778 children with new onset seizures, 63 (0.58%) had metabolic epilepsy. The male female ratio was 1.3:1. Onset of the seizures were in neo

The Prevalence, Associated Factors, and Clinical Characterization of Malassezia folliculitis in Patients Clinically Diagnosed with Acne Vulgaris.

BACKGROUND: The clinical presentation of Malassezia folliculitis (MF) can imitate acne vulgaris (AV), making it difficult to distinguish between the two conditions. Moreover, MF can coexist with AV in the same patient. The incidence of MF in patients clinically diagnosed with AV may be underestimated. This study aimed to determine the prevalence, associated factors, and clinical characterization of MF patients diagnosed with AV. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Three hundred twenty new acne patients were questioned regarding general information, including age, sex, itchy symptoms, and past treatment hi

Incubatory environment of the scalp impacts pre-emergent hair to affect post-emergent hair cuticle integrity.

OBJECTIVES: To determine whether the oxidative stress transmitted to newly grown hair from an unhealthy scalp has physical consequences to the cuticular condition and function. METHODS: A uniquely designed 24-week clinical study included 8 weeks of pretreatment with a cosmetic shampoo and 16 weeks of treatment with either a potentiated zinc pyrithione (ZPT) antidandruff shampoo or a placebo cosmetic shampoo. This clinical design allowed the growth and acquisition of hair samples under conditions of varying but known scalp health as a result of treating a dandruff/seborrheic dermatitis (D/SD)

Potential of IL-1, IL-18 and Inflammasome Inhibition for the Treatment of Inflammatory Skin Diseases.

In 2002, intracellular protein complexes known as the inflammasomes were discovered and were shown to have a crucial role in the sensing of intracellular pathogen- and danger-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs and DAMPs). Activation of the inflammasomes results in the processing and subsequent secretion of the pro-inflammatory cytokines IL-1β and IL-18. Several autoinflammatory disorders such as cryopyrin-associated periodic syndromes and Familial Mediterranean Fever have been associated with mutations of genes encoding inflammasome components. Moreover, the importance of IL-1 has been repor

The management of rosacea.

Rosacea is a multiphasic disease which is associated with flushing, erythrosis, papulopustular rosacea and phymas; each phase is likely to have its own treatment. Flushing is better prevented rather than treated, and its etiology investigated. Beta-blockers, atenolol in particular, are worthy of prophylactic trials examining their efficacy in treating the flushing associated with rosacea. Currently, clonidine is the only drug available for the treatment of flushing. Treatment for erythrosis includes topical and systemic therapies. Metronidazole 1% cream and azelaic acid 20% cream have been rep

Perianal Crohn-like disease in infancy revealing multisystem Langerhans cell histiocytosis.

BACKGROUND: Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) is a rare inflammatory myeloid neoplasm characterized by abnormal myeloid differentiation and activation of the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathway. Since atypical dermatological or gastrointestinal manifestations in early childhood can lead to diagnostic delays, timely recognition of this potentially multisystemic disease is critical for a favorable prognosis. CASE PRESENTATION: A 22-month-old male patient presented to the pediatric gastroenterology outpatient clinic with complaints of bloody-mucoid diarrhea for three months, signif

Artificial intelligence in trichology: A systematic review of current applications in diagnosis, severity assessment, and treatment monitoring.

BACKGROUND: Artificial intelligence (AI) methods are increasingly used to assess hair and scalp disorders. However, the range of clinical tasks addressed, model performance, and methodological robustness across indications remains unclear. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review following PRISMA guidance. PubMed/MEDLINE, Web of Science, Scopus, and Cochrane CENTRAL were searched from inception to December 2025, with additional reference screening. We included interventional or observational studies that developed, validated, or clinically evaluated AI and machine learning (ML) models using

Diagnostic challenges and treatment breakthroughs in Malassezia restricta-induced meningoencephalitis: a real-world analysis of early mNGS applications.

BACKGROUND: Malassezia restricta is a lipid-dependent yeast species that commonly colonizes human and warm-blooded animal skin as an opportunistic pathogen. Although strongly associated with dermatological conditions like seborrheic dermatitis, central nervous system (CNS) infections caused by Malassezia restricta are remarkably rare. These infections typically present with nonspecific clinical features, leading to frequent diagnostic delays and misdiagnosis. METHODS: We performed a retrospective analysis of five definitive cases of Malassezia restricta-induced meningoencephalitis diagnosed a

Association between metabolic syndrome and prevalent skin diseases: A systematic review and meta-analysis of case-control studies.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a well-known noncommunicable disease that plays a significant role in emerging other chronic disorders and following complications. MetS is also involved in the pathophysiology of numerous dermatological diseases. We aim to evaluate the association of MetS with the most prevalent dermatological diseases. METHODS: A systematic search was carried out on PubMed, Science Direct, Web of Science, Cochrane, as well as the Google Scholar search engine. Only English case-control studies regarding MetS and any skin disease from the beginning of 2010 up t

Prenatal prediction of infant atopy by maternal but not paternal total IgE levels.

BACKGROUND: The atopic history of parents has long been used to predict infant atopy. However, bias from questionnaires of allergic history are also frequently suspected, because a large number of vasomotor rhinitis, intrinsic asthma, and seborrheic dermatitis cases are probably misinterpreted to be atopic diseases. OBJECTIVE: We attempted to identify a risk factor other than parental atopic history to predict elevated infant IgE levels and infant atopy. METHODS: A total of 655 core families were prenatally recruited, and finally 545 families completed the study for the prospective analysis

Specular light reflectance of flakes in seborrhoeic dermatitis of the scalp: a pilot study.

Seborrhoeic dermatitis and dandruff are common scalp conditions. In this study, we set out to explore a new method for rating both the severity of the scalp condition and the efficacy of scalp-care compounds. Scalp flakiness was sampled for 40 volunteers using adhesive-coated clear discs, with image analysis used to quantify the specular light reflectance (SLR) of the flakes Two ultraviolet (UV)-emitting charge-coupled device cameras (Visioscan VC98 and Visiopor PP34) were used. SLR clearly highlighted the flakiness with high contrast against a black background, and the recorded appearance cou
