Mediating processes between stress and problematic marijuana use.

BACKGROUND: The literature widely reports that stress is associated with marijuana use, yet, to date, the path from stress to marijuana-related problems has not been tested. In this study, we evaluated whether negative affect mediates the relationship between stress and marijuana use. METHODS: To that end, we tested models to determine mediators between problems with marijuana use (via Marijuana Problem Scale), stress (via Early Life Stress Questionnaire, Perceived Stress Scale), and negative affect (via Beck Depression Inventory; Beck Anxiety Inventory) in 157 current heavy marijuana users.

Degraded neural and behavioral processing of speech sounds in a rat model of Rett syndrome.

Individuals with Rett syndrome have greatly impaired speech and language abilities. Auditory brainstem responses to sounds are normal, but cortical responses are highly abnormal. In this study, we used the novel rat Mecp2 knockout model of Rett syndrome to document the neural and behavioral processing of speech sounds. We hypothesized that both speech discrimination ability and the neural response to speech sounds would be impaired in Mecp2 rats. We expected that extensive speech training would improve speech discrimination ability and the cortical response to speech sounds. Our results reveal

Suicide related ideation and behavior among Canadian gay and bisexual men: a syndemic analysis.

BACKGROUND: While several studies have demonstrated that gay and bisexual men are at increased risk of suicide less attention has been given to the processes that generate the inherent inequity with the mainstream population. This study tested whether syndemic theory can explain the excess suicide burden in a sample of Canadian gay and bisexual men. Syndemic theory accounts for co-occurring and mutually reinforcing epidemics suffered by vulnerable groups due to the effects of social marginalization. METHODS: This study used data from Sex Now 2011, a cross-sectional survey of Canadian gay and

[Analysis of independent components for event-related potentials from patients with an established diagnosis of schizophrenia, obsessive-compulsive and depressive disorders].

We investigated the possibility to classify data from patients with different psychiatric disorders on the base of physiological measures of the brain activity. Event-related potentials during the execution of GO/NOGO task were recorded from age matched groups of patients with schizophrenia, major depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder. Separation of independent components for event-related potentials was performed by applying Independent Component Analysis method. Picked out components were used in the method of discriminant analysis to classify the data according to clinical diagnosis.

Face-specific impairment in holistic perception following focal lesion of the right anterior temporal lobe.

Recent studies have provided solid evidence for pure cases of prosopagnosia following brain damage. The patients reported so far have posterior lesions encompassing either or both the right inferior occipital cortex and fusiform gyrus, and exhibit a critical impairment in generating a sufficiently detailed holistic percept to individualize faces. Here, we extended these observations to include the prosopagnosic patient LR (Bukach, Bub, Gauthier, & Tarr, 2006), whose damage is restricted to the anterior region of the right temporal lobe. First, we report that LR is able to discriminate parametr

Historical trauma and substance use among Native Hawaiian college students.

OBJECTIVES: To test the relationships among historical trauma, perceived discrimination, and substance use (cigarette, alcohol, and marijuana use) among Native Hawaiians. METHODS: Cross sectional self-report data were collected online from 128 Native Hawaiian community college students (M age = 27.5; SD = 9.5; 65% Women). Hypotheses were tested using structural equation modeling. RESULTS: Historical trauma had 2 paths to substance use: an indirect path to higher substance use through higher perceived discrimination and a direct path to lower substance use. CONCLUSIONS: Thoughts, knowledge,

Disrupted effective connectivity between the amygdala and orbitofrontal cortex in social anxiety disorder during emotion discrimination revealed by dynamic causal modeling for FMRI.

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is characterized by over-reactivity of fear-related circuits in social or performance situations and associated with marked social impairment. We used dynamic causal modeling (DCM), a method to evaluate effective connectivity, to test our hypothesis that SAD patients would exhibit dysfunctions in the amygdala-prefrontal emotion regulation network. Thirteen unmedicated SAD patients and 13 matched healthy controls performed a series of facial emotion and object discrimination tasks while undergoing fMRI. The emotion-processing network was identified by a task-relate

Emotion perception in Alzheimer's disease and mood disorder in old age.

Difficulties in understanding emotional signals might have important implications for social interactions in old age. In this study we investigated emotion perception skills involved in decoding facial expressions of emotion in healthy older adults, compared with those with Alzheimer's disease (AD) or late-life mood disorder (MD). Although those with MD were mildly impaired in identifying emotional expressions, this was not caused by negative biases in choosing labels. Emotion decoding performance in AD was much more impaired, particularly when relatively subtle expressions were presented. Dif

Information processing differences and similarities in adults with dyslexia and adults with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder during a Continuous Performance Test: a study of cortical potentials.

Twenty male adults with ADHD, 16 dyslexic adults, 15 comorbid adults, and 16 normal controls were compared on performance and underlying brain responses, during a cued Continuous Performance Test (O-X CPT), with the aim of discovering features of information processing differentiating between the groups. The study evaluated both cue- and target-related processes by analysing performance measures (errors, reaction time, and variability of reaction time), and event-related potentials (ERPs). Cue-related ERP components included the Cue-N2, Cue-P3, contingent negative variation (CNV) consisting of

Neuropsychological mechanisms of Digit Symbol Substitution Test impairment in Asperger Disorder.

Our aim was to investigate the neurocognitive mechanisms recruited by adolescents with Asperger Disorder (AD), in comparison to controls, and to detect the underlying mechanisms during the complex information processing required for the performance of the Digit Symbol Substitution Test (DSST). Male adolescents (n=23; mean age 15.1+/-3.6 years) with a DSM-IV diagnosis of AD were compared with a normal male control group with similar demographic characteristics (n=43; mean age: 15.1+/-3.6 years). A computerized neurocognitive battery was administered and included: Inspection Time (IT), Finger Ta

Compromised speed discrimination among schizophrenia patients when viewing smooth pursuit targets.

Schizophrenia subjects' smooth pursuit abnormalities may reflect a problem with perception of motion, although evidence comes primarily from reports using stimuli that differ from standard smooth pursuit stimuli (i.e. moving gratings or coherent dots). This study presented schizophrenia and healthy subjects with a forced-choice speed discrimination paradigm using smooth pursuit-like stimuli. The schizophrenia subject's motion processing was impaired, as evidenced by their significantly higher speed discrimination thresholds (a difference that was 1.7 larger for the patient group). Abnormalitie

Deficits of visual motion perception and optokinetic nystagmus after posterior suprasylvian lesions in the ferret (Mustela putorius furo).

We recently described an area in the ferret posterior suprasylvian (PSS) cortex characterized by a high proportion of direction selective neurons. To answer the question whether area PSS subserves functions similar to cat posteromediolateral suprasylvian area (PMLS) and monkey medial temporal area (MT) we investigated the contribution of area PSS to visual motion perception and optokinetic nystagmus. Ferrets were tested on global motion detection before and after bilateral lesions involving area PSS and control lesions of other extrastriate visual areas. Following PSS lesions motion coherence

Attention and sensory interactions within the occipital cortex in the early blind: an fMRI study.

Visual deprivation early in life results in occipital cortical responsiveness across a broad range of perceptual and cognitive tasks. In the reorganized occipital cortex of early blind (EB) individuals, the relative lack of specificity for particular sensory stimuli and tasks suggests that attention effects may play a prominent role in these areas. We wished to establish whether occipital cortical areas in the EB were responsive to stimuli across sensory modalities (auditory, tactile) and whether these areas maintained or altered their activity as a function of selective attention. Using a thr

TMS over right posterior parietal cortex induces neglect in a scene-based frame of reference.

Although damage to right posterior parietal cortex (RPPC) produces bias in line bisection, Karnath et al. [Karnath, H.-O., Berger, M. F., Küker, W., & Rorden, C. (2004). We used a detection task (approximating cancellation in requiring detection) to investigate this claim by compromising the parietal cortex with transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). Fronto-striatal deficit in Parkinson's disease during semantic event sequencing.

Studies of Parkinson's disease (PD) suggest that cognitive deficits accompany the classically recognized motor symptoms, and that these cognitive deficits may result from damage to frontal-basal ganglia circuits. PD patients are impaired on ordering events and action components into coherent sequences. In this study, we examined early-stage, nondemented, medicated PD subjects and matched control subjects during a semantic event sequencing task using functional MRI (fMRI). The task required subjects to examine four pictures of meaningful events, determine the correct temporal relationship betwe

The clinical significance of electrophysiological measures of olfactory function.

AIM: To establish the detectability of olfactory event-related potentials (OERP) in relation to the results from psychophysical tests of olfactory function. METHODS: Fifty-nine men and 64 women (aged 19-89 years) participated all of whom presented themselves to a specialized "Smell and Taste Clinic" because of chemosensory complaints. Their olfactory function was assessed by means of psychophysical tests, e.g., assessment of odor threshold, odor discrimination, and odor identification, which were combined in a composite "Threshold Discrimination Identification" score ("TDI score"). OERP were

The looming maladaptive style predicts shared variance in anxiety disorder symptoms: further support for a cognitive model of vulnerability to anxiety.

Looming vulnerability pertains to a distinct cognitive phenomenology characterized by mental representations of dynamically intensifying danger and rapidly rising risk as one projects the self into an anticipated future [J. Pers. Soc. Psychol. 79 (2000) 837]. While looming appraisals can be experienced as state elicitation, some individuals are hypothesized to develop an enduring cognitive pattern of cross-situational looming appraisals, the looming maladaptive style (LMS), which functions as a cognitive vulnerability to anxiety. In the present study, we examined the extent to which the LMS pr

Differential effects of two blockers of small conductance Ca2+-activated K+ channels, apamin and lei-Dab7, on learning and memory in rats.

SK channels are responsible for long-lasting hyperpolarization following action potential and contribute to the neuronal integration signal. This study evaluates the involvement of SK channels on learning and memory in rats, by comparing the effects of two SK channel blockers, i.e., apamin which recognizes SK2 and SK3 channels, and lei-Dab7 which binds SK2 channels only. lei-Dab7 totally competes and contests apamin binding on whole brain sections (IC(50): 11.4 nM). Using an olfactory associative task, intracerebroventricular blocker injections were tested on reference memory. Once the task wa

The role of spared calcarine cortex and lateral occipital cortex in the responses of human hemianopes to visual motion.

Some patients, who are rendered perimetrically blind in one hemifield by cortical lesions, nevertheless exhibit residual visual capacities within their field defects. The neural mechanism that mediates the residual visual responses has remained the topic of considerable debate. One explanation posits the subcortical visual pathways that bypass the primary visual cortex and innervate the extrastriate visual areas as the substrate that underlies the residual vision. The other explanation is that small islands of the primary visual cortex remain intact and provide the signals for residual vision.

Coherence and specificity of information-processing biases in depression and social phobia.

Research has not resolved whether depression is associated with a distinct information-processing bias, whether the content of the information-processing bias in depression is specific to themes of loss and sadness, or whether biases are consistent across the tasks most commonly used to assess attention and memory processing. In the present study, participants diagnosed with major depression, social phobia, or no Axis I disorder, completed several information-processing tasks assessing attention and memory for sad, socially threatening, physically threatening, and positive stimuli. As predicte
