Computed tomography (CT) is valuable for detection and characterization of many inflammatory conditions of the colon. At CT, a dilated, thickened appendix is suggestive of appendicitis. A 1-4-cm, oval, fatty pericolic lesion with surrounding mesenteric inflammation is diagnostic of epiploic appendagitis. The key to distinguishing diverticulitis from other inflammatory conditions of the colon is the presence of diverticula in the involved segment. Increased use of advanced imaging techniques has resulted in increased reporting and recognition of hepatic portal venous gas. UNLABELLED: DIAGNOSTIC FINDINGS: We report about a 83 years old female with persisting abdominal pain for 3 days. Abdominal x-ray, as well as abdominal ultrasound examination were unsuccessful. CT scan revealed a 7 cm tumor, suspicious for abscess. OPERATION: Diagnostic laparotomy showed a 6 cm inflammatory tumor with covered perforation of a jejunal diverticula at the 4th intestinal loop distal the ligament of Treitz. OBJECTIVE: Congenital bladder diverticula (CBD) usually occur in areas where the muscle is inadequately formed, typically at the ureterovesical junction, or between bundles of hypertrophied muscle. CBD are mostly asymptomatic and the cases are found incidentally. Occasionally, some cases of CBD may produce urinary obstruction as a result of compression of the urethra or urinary tract infection which result in retention of urine within the diverticulum.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We present 3 infants with CBD accompanied with urinary tract infection (2 cases) and outlet obstruction (1 case).

This article is concerned with current diagnosis and treatment of patients with severe lower gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding. Our purposes were to discuss tests available for diagnosis and treatment and to present our approach and to discuss cost assessment of different approaches. We evaluated 100 consecutive patients who presented with severe and persistent lower GI bleeding. Patients were continually monitored and had polyethylene sulfate purge to cleanse the colon. Panendoscopy revealed an upper GI source in 11%. Presumed small bowel bleeding accounted for 9%, and no site was found in 6%. D

A rare case of xanthogranulomatous inflammation of the sigmoid colon presenting as intestinal obstruction is reported. This is the first report of this lesion involving the large bowel which demonstrated the characteristic macroscopic and microscopic features. Though rare, xanthogranulomatous inflammation should be considered in patients presenting with large bowel obstruction.

Pneumomediastinum and subcutaneous emphysema of the neck occur exceptionally in spontaneous, retroperitoneal perforation of the sigmoid colon. These signs, in association with a septic syndrome and multiple organ failure, mandate the search of a gastrointestinal tract perforation, even in the absence of digestive symptoms. Careful deep palpation of the abdomen may determine the abdominal origin of the septic focus and thereby provide justification for exploratory laparotomy without further diagnostic investigations.

A patient with end-stage heart disease was discharged from the hospital on postoperative day 7 after orthotopic heart transplantation. Internal fistulas in diverticular disease are uncommon and have a reputation of being difficult to treat. Eighty four patients treated from 1960 to April 1986, representing 20.4 percent (84 of 412) of the surgically treated diverticular disease patients, were reviewed. Eight patients had multiple fistulas.
