A survey of ophthalmic emergencies attending the casualty department of a district general hospital over a 12-month period is presented. The total number of new casualty attendances was 30,649 of which 1870 (6.1%) presented with an ophthalmic problem. There was a 3 to 1 male to female preponderance and a peak age of presentation between 20 and 30 years. The main aetiological factors were trauma 65.6% and inflammation 21.7%. Of the trauma patients 80% had sustained minor trauma (abrasions or foreign material to the cornea or conjunctiva) and of the patients with inflammation 71% had either conj

The case presented is that of a 22-year-old male with Wolf-Hirschhorn syndrome who was referred with glaucoma refractory to medical treatment. Six other patients have been described with Wolf-Hirschhorn syndrome (WHS) and glaucoma, most being congenital glaucoma with diagnosis in infancy. We describe the first case of juvenile onset glaucoma in this syndrome. Our patient had narrow angles on gonioscopy, with ultrasound biomicroscopy revealing ciliary body cysts. We alert others to the possibility of this mechanism of secondary narrow angle glaucoma associated with this chromosomal deletion syn

Cataract surgery in hyperopic individuals presents unique anatomical and physiological challenges, including shallow anterior chambers, increased lens vaults, and a higher risk of intraoperative complications. This review explores key considerations for preoperative assessment, surgical planning, and intraoperative techniques tailored to hyperopic eyes. Preoperative evaluation involves identifying systemic and ocular risk factors, such as alpha-1 blocker use, which may contribute to intraoperative floppy iris syndrome (IFIS). Key assessments include anterior chamber depth (ACD), corneal endoth
