Structural brain alterations associated with dyslexia predate reading onset.

Functional magnetic resonance imaging studies have reported reduced activation in parietotemporal and occipitotemporal areas in adults and children with developmental dyslexia compared to controls during reading and reading related tasks. These patterns of regionally reduced activation have been linked to behavioral impairments of reading-related processes (e.g., phonological skills and rapid automatized naming). The observed functional and behavioral differences in individuals with developmental dyslexia have been complemented by reports of reduced gray matter in left parietotemporal, occipit

Long-term prognosis of low language proficiency in children.

BACKGROUND: Low language proficiency (LLP) affects up to 10% of children, depending on how it is defined, and is a known risk factor for academic and social difficulties. Despite growing awareness, there is limited consensus on the long-term consequences of LLP across quality of life domains. This review synthesises evidence from longitudinal cohort studies to evaluate long-term risks associated with LLP identified between ages four and eight, with follow-up from age 12 onwards. OBJECTIVES: To examine the long-term outcomes of children aged four to eight years with low language proficiency (L

Prediction of Clinically Significant Depressive Symptoms at 2-Year Follow-Up in Older Adults: Machine Learning Study Using the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing.

BACKGROUND: Depression in older adults is often underdiagnosed due to atypical symptom presentation and generational stigma, leading to delayed intervention. Early identification of individuals at risk of developing elevated depressive symptoms is therefore critical, but traditional approaches show limited predictive accuracy. To date, no study has applied machine learning (ML) models to predict clinically significant depressive symptoms at 2-year follow-up in older adults in the United Kingdom using data from the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (ELSA). Moreover, the impact of encoding st

Usability and Feasibility of a Smartphone App to Assess Human Behavioral Factors Associated with Tick Exposure (The Tick App): Quantitative and Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: Mobile health (mHealth) technology takes advantage of smartphone features to turn them into research tools, with the potential to reach a larger section of the population in a cost-effective manner, compared with traditional epidemiological methods. Although mHealth apps have been widely implemented in chronic diseases and psychology, their potential use in the research of vector-borne diseases has not yet been fully exploited. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess the usability and feasibility of The Tick App, the first tick research-focused app in the United States. METHODS: Th

How Can Dental Professionals Better Identify, Report, Refer, Treat, and Support Domestic Abuse Victims? An International Multidisciplinary Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: Domestic abuse (DA) is a global public health issue with significant oral and maxillofacial consequences. Dental professionals often encounter clinical signs of DA in clinical settings. However, barriers such as lack of training, uncertainty about reporting obligations, and limited referral pathways contribute to missed opportunities for intervention. OBJECTIVES: This study explored how dental professionals can more effectively identify, report, refer, treat, and support DA victims, based on perspectives from a multidisciplinary team of healthcare, legal, and social service profes

Unmasking concealed depression through the digital leakage effect: A narrative review and theoretical framework with implications for asian populations.

BACKGROUND: A persistent paradox haunts modern psychiatric epidemiology: despite decades of investment in mental health screening, suicide rates have not declined appreciably, with up to 60% of suicide decedents denying suicidal ideation during their final clinical encounter. Individuals with concealed depression-particularly in East and Southeast Asian populations where cultural norms of face (mianzi), emotional restraint, and somatization discourage disclosure-systematically evade detection by standard self-report instruments such as the PHQ-9. OBJECTIVES: This narrative review introduces t

A Diagnostic Challenge in an Adolescent with Collagen VI-Related Myopathy and Emotional Disorder-Case Report.

Collagen VI-related disorders constitute a spectrum of severities from the milder Bethlem myopathy (BM) to the Ullrich congenital muscular dystrophy (UCMD), which is more severe, and an intermediate form characterized by muscle weakness that begins in infancy. Affected children are able to walk, although walking becomes increasingly difficult starting in early adulthood. They develop contractures in the ankles, elbows, knees, and spine in childhood. In some affected cases, the respiratory muscles are weakened, requiring mechanical ventilation, particularly during sleep. Individuals with collag

Creating a Patient-Based Diagnostic Checklist for Functional Tics During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been a dramatic change in the presentation of patients with tics. The explosive presentation of atypical tics (TT) has been noted worldwide and thought to be the manifestation of a pandemic-associated functional neurologic disorder following social media exposure to tics. Nevertheless, despite the frequent diagnosis of functional tics (FT), there are no existing formal diagnostic criteria. The primary aim of this study was to create a patient-based diagnostic checklist for making the diagnosis of a functional tic di

A prospective interventional study investigating sleep disorders prior to and during adjuvant radiotherapy for breast cancer.

BACKGROUND: Most breast cancer patients with non-metastatic disease receive adjuvant local or loco-regional radiotherapy. To be scheduled for irradiation may cause distress and fears that can lead to sleep disorders. Few reports focused on sleep problems in patients assigned to radiotherapy. This study evaluates the course of sleep disorders during adjuvant radiotherapy for primary breast cancer and potential risk factors including the use of smartphones or tablets at bedtime. METHODS: The main goal is the evaluation of sleep disorders prior to radiotherapy and after 15 fractions of radiother

Transition from Acute to Chronic Pain: Evaluating Risk for Chronic Postsurgical Pain.

BACKGROUND: The pathophysiology of pain involves complex nervous system interactions after initial noxious stimuli. When stimuli persist, biochemical and structural changes occur in the nociceptive pathways of the central and peripheral nervous systems, leading to pain sensitization. Peripheral and central sensitization are key in the transition from acute to chronic pain. This development of chronic pain is particularly common following various surgical procedures, with many postsurgical patients experiencing persistent pain for significant periods. Chronic pain is a common and severe complic

The Efficacy of a Web-Based Screening and Brief Intervention for Reducing Alcohol Consumption Among Japanese Problem Drinkers: Protocol for a Single-Blind Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: The literature shows that computer-delivered interventions with personalized normative feedback can reduce problem drinking for up to 6 months in the West. Meanwhile, no studies have been conducted to examine the effects of such interventions among Japanese problem drinkers. Possible moderators associated with effectiveness of the intervention need to be also explored. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to conduct a trial and examine the efficacy of a brief intervention with personal normative feedback and psychoeducation on several measures of alcohol consumption among Japan

The Bipolar Illness Onset study: research protocol for the BIO cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: Bipolar disorder is an often disabling mental illness with a lifetime prevalence of 1%-2%, a high risk of recurrence of manic and depressive episodes, a lifelong elevated risk of suicide and a substantial heritability. The course of illness is frequently characterised by progressive shortening of interepisode intervals with each recurrence and increasing cognitive dysfunction in a subset of individuals with this condition. Clinically, diagnostic boundaries between bipolar disorder and other psychiatric disorders such as unipolar depression are unclear although pharmacological and

Chronic idiopathic urticaria and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD): an under-recognized comorbidity.

A large body of literature supports the role of psychologic stress in urticaria; however, the comorbidity between chronic idiopathic urticaria (CIU) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), a classic stress-mediated syndrome, has received little attention. The underlying etiology of urticaria is not identifiable in about 70% of patients, possibly because of difficulties with identification of a direct cause-and-effect relationship between a potential causative factor and the onset of urticaria. The core features of PTSD (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 4th Edition, Tex

Rapid community identification, pain and distress associated with lymphoedema and adenolymphangitis due to lymphatic filariasis in resource-limited communities of North-eastern Nigeria.

Identification of communities with people that could benefit from adenolymphangitis (ADL) and lymphoedema morbidity management within Lymphatic Filariasis Elimination Programmes (NLFEP) in many African countries is a major challenge to programme managers. Another challenge is advocating for proportionate allocation of funds to alleviating the suffering that afflicted people bear. In this study we developed a rapid qualitative technique of identifying communities where morbidity management programme could be situated and documenting the pain and distress that afflicted persons endure. Improving recreational, residential, and vocational outcomes for patients with schizophrenia.

As Roder and colleagues propose, we have seen three eras in the development and refinement of social skills training for individuals with schizophrenia. In the 1960s, skills training relied on the use of operant conditioning, as exemplified by the token economy. Reinforcement contingencies succeeded in activating patients with negative symptoms and in improving their social behavior. Contemporary psychiatric rehabilitation can profit from the identification and use of reinforcers to motivate anergic individuals who lack insight to participate actively in community-based programs. During the se

Disorders of visual recognition.

Agnosias are disorders of recognition, specific to one sensory channel, that affect either the perceptual analysis of the stimulus or the recognition of its meaning. In the visual modality, objects, faces, and colors can be separately disrupted. Apperceptive object agnosia refers to failure to achieve a structured description of the shape of the object. Associative agnosia refers to inability to attribute a meaning to a correctly perceived stimulus. It must be differentiated from optic aphasia, in which the object is recognized but cannot be named in the visual modality. Associative agnosia an

Childhood Trauma Questionnaire-based child maltreatment profiles to predict efficacy of the Cognitive Behavioral Analysis System of Psychotherapy versus non-specific psychotherapy in adults with early-onset chronic depression: cluster analysis of data from a randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Child maltreatment is a broadly confirmed risk factor for mental and physical illness. Some psychological treatments specifically target mental health conditions associated with child maltreatment. For example, the Cognitive Behavioral Analysis System of Psychotherapy (CBASP) focuses on maladaptive interpersonal behaviours in chronic depression. However, how the assessment of child maltreatment could inform personalised treatment is unclear. We used data from a previously published clinical trial to investigate whether a pre-established child maltreatment clustering approach predic

Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders (DC/TMD) for Clinical and Research Applications: recommendations of the International RDC/TMD Consortium Network* and Orofacial Pain Special Interest Group†.

AIMS: The original Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders (RDC/TMD) Axis I diagnostic algorithms have been demonstrated to be reliable. However, the Validation Project determined that the RDC/TMD Axis I validity was below the target sensitivity of ≥ 0.70 and specificity of ≥ 0.95. Consequently, these empirical results supported the development of revised RDC/TMD Axis I diagnostic algorithms that were subsequently demonstrated to be valid for the most common pain-related TMD and for one temporomandibular joint (TMJ) intra-articular disorder. The original RDC/TMD Axis II in
