Custom-Machined Miniplates and Bone-Supported Guides for Orthognathic Surgery: A New Surgical Procedure.

PURPOSE: Several surgical strategies exist to improve accuracy in orthognathic surgery, but ideal planning and treatment have yet to be described. The purpose of this study was to present and assess the accuracy of a virtual orthognathic positioning system (OPS), based on the use of bone-supported guides for placement of custom, highly rigid, machined titanium miniplates produced using computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing technology. MATERIALS AND METHODS: An institutional review board-approved prospective observational study was designed to evaluate our early experience wit

Morphogenesis of the compartmentalizing bone around the molar primordia in the mouse mandible during dental developmental stages between lamina, bell-stage, and root formation (E13-P20).

Despite increasing knowledge of the basic molecular aspects of bone formation and its regulation, the mechanisms of bone morphogenesis leading to a topologically specific shape remain unknown. The formation of the alveolar bone, which houses the dental primordia and later, the dental roots, may serve as a model to understand the formation of bone form in general. Thirty-eight heads of mice (C57 Bl/6J) ranging from stages E13-P20 were used to prepare histological serial sections. For each stage, virtual 3D-reconstructions were made in order to study the morphogenesis of the mandibular molar pri

The temporal expression and localization of extracellular matrix metalloproteinase inducer (EMMPRIN) during the development of periodontitis in an animal model.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: We previously demonstrated extracellular matrix metalloproteinase inducer (EMMPRIN) was associated with the matrix metalloproteinases production of human periodontitis. The aim of this study was to investigate the temporal expression and localization of EMMPRIN during ligature-induced periodontitis in rats. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Periodontitis was induced in rats by placing a thread around the cervix of the first mandibular molar. Animals were killed 3, 7, 11, 15 or 21 d after ligation. Mandibles were processed for paraffin sections and stained with hematoxylin and eo

Outcomes of total temporomandibular joint replacement: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Temporomandibular joint replacement (TMJR) is a reconstructive surgical modality that is available to patients with end-stage temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) that fail conservative treatment. Alloplastic prostheses are either custom-made or stock devices used to restore mandibular function and reduce pain; however, comparative data and long-term outcomes are limited. This systematic review aimed to assess post-surgical functional, pain, and quality-of-life outcomes following alloplastic total TMJR. METHODS: We searched PubMed, Google Scholar, Scopus, and institutional databases

Sex Attractant Pheromones of Virgin Queens of Sympatric Slave-Making Ant Species in the Genus Polyergus, and their Possible Roles in Reproductive Isolation.

Species of the ant genus Polyergus are social parasites that steal brood from colonies of their hosts in the closely related genus Formica. Upon emergence as adults in a mixed population, host Formica workers carry out all the normal worker functions within the Polyergus colony, including foraging, feeding, grooming, and rearing brood of the parasitic Polyergus ants. Some unmated Polyergus gynes (queens) run in the raiding columns of their colonies and attract males by releasing a pheromone from their mandibular glands. There are two Polyergus species groups in North America: an eastern P. luc

A method of treating the patient with postpubescent juvenile rheumatoid arthritis.

PURPOSE: Juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA) is a perplexing and devastating disease for which establishment of a treatment protocol is difficult. The relatively low incidence and unknown cause of this disorder have made it difficult to establish when and how to intervene. Treatment protocols for the prepubescent patient (<12 years for girls and 14 years for boys), as well as for the adult, have been established. A protocol for postpubescence (ages 12 through 18 years) has yet to be established. This pilot study attempts to establish another treatment protocol for this particular subgroup of p

Human-like malformations in anole lizards: Potential cases of "hopeful monsters" resembling chameleon morphology.

Vertebrates exhibit remarkable morphological diversity, with the head representing an exceptionally complex anatomical structure shaped by adaptations to feeding ecology, brain size, and sensory organ specialization. Proper fusion of facial prominences and the coordinated growth of the skull and brain are essential for normal craniofacial development in vertebrates, including humans. Disruptions in these processes, whether due to gene mutations or external factors, can result in craniofacial malformations. In this study, we examined two pathological embryos of the brown anole, Anolis sagrei (I

Roentgencephalometric analysis of the skulls of the Luxemburgs, the second Bohemian Royal Dynasty.

X-ray films of the skull of the king and emperor Charles IV and his four wives and two sons were made under standard conditions with the mandibles fixed in a centric occlusion. The results of roentgenocephalometric analysis were compared with norms valid for the contemporary Czech population. Consistent with the somatic condition of Charles IV, the findings indicate an above-average large face with the usual anteriorotational developmental type. The facial skeleton is structurally harmonious, but the sagittal intermaxillary relations belong into skeletal class II with a relatively retruded low

The human chondrocranium at the end of the embryonic period, proper, with particular reference to the nervous system.

The chondrocranium at stage 23 (27-32 mm C.-R., 8 postovulatory weeks) was studied in detail to fill the descriptive gap between 7 and 9 weeks. Serial sections of ten embryos, all belonging to the same developmental stage, were investigated and compared. Graphic and Perspektomat reconstructions were made from three embryos. The chondrocranium forms a continuous mass of well-formed cartilage, which blends with early cartilage in the nasal, orbital, and otic regions, around the future foramen rotundum, and at the site of the parietal lamina. The chondrocranium and "membrane" bones cover a relati

Typology of the antegonial notch in the human mandible.

BACKGROUND: Surgical treatment for serious malocclusions and fractures of the organ of mastication is a golden standard in medicine. Procedures performed on the mandible require detailed knowledge of the anatomy of the organ. Antegonial notching constitutes a serious technical challenge for surgeons. Therefore, a detailed anatomical description of this structure, which is the subject of this paper, is essential. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We analysed 251 human Caucasian mandibles of identified sex and took measurements of all sections describing the mandibular antegonial notch. Depending on the p
