SCOPING: A Pilot Study Exploring the Role of A Series of Clinical Observational Parameters as Indicators of Nerve Regeneration.

BACKGROUND: Following the repair of a mixed peripheral nerve, functional recovery requires successful nerve regeneration across the repair site and, eventually, reinnervation of distal targets. Reliably determining a failing nerve repair so that revision may be performed before irreversible muscle atrophy remains a challenge in peripheral nerve surgery. This study aimed to ascertain whether any commonly used clinical examination tests during surveillance after nerve repair can detect a failing repair and prompt earlier salvage intervention. METHODS: A prospective observational cohort study wa

Stimulation of extrinsic sympathetic nerves differentially affects neurogenic motor activity in guinea pig distal colon.

The speed of pellet propulsion through the isolated guinea pig distal colon in vitro significantly exceeds in vivo measurements, suggesting a role for inhibitory mechanisms from sources outside the gut. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of sympathetic nerve stimulation on three different neurogenic motor behaviors of the distal colon: transient neural events (TNEs), colonic motor complexes (CMCs), and pellet propulsion. To do this, segments of guinea pig distal colon with intact connections to the inferior mesenteric ganglion (IMG) were set up in organ baths allowing for sim

Rethinking O2, CO2 and breathing during wakefulness and sleep.

We have examined the importance of three long-standing questions concerning chemoreceptor influences on cardiorespiratory function which are currently experiencing a resurgence of study among physiologists and clinical investigators. Firstly, while carotid chemoreceptors (CB) are required for hypoxic stimulation of breathing, use of an isolated, extracorporeally perfused CB preparation in unanaesthetized animals with maintained tonic input from the CB, reveals that extra-CB hypoxaemia also provides dose-dependent ventilatory stimulation sufficient to account for 40-50% of the total ventilatory

Synaptic dysfunction in ALS and FTD: anatomical and molecular changes provide insights into mechanisms of disease.

Synaptic loss is a pathological feature of all neurodegenerative diseases including amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and frontotemporal dementia (FTD). ALS is a disease of the cortical and spinal motor neurons resulting in fatal paralysis due to denervation of muscles. FTD is a form of dementia that primarily affects brain regions controlling cognition, language and behavior. Once classified as two distinct diseases, ALS and FTD are now considered as part of a common disease spectrum based on overlapping clinical, pathological and genetic evidence. At the cellular level, aggregation of comm

Impairment of urinary bladder mechanical properties in rat model of type 2 diabetes.

AIMS: The urinary bladder is a mechanosensitive organ that accumulates, stores, and expels considerable amounts of fluid. While the neuronal bladder control via the CNS is well defined, the data on the mechanisms of local mechanical sensitivity of the bladder wall are either insufficient or contradictory. Here we compared the mechanical properties of bladder wall of normal rats and rats with modeled type 2 diabetes (T2D). METHODS: T2D was modeled in 3-month-old Wistar male rats by combined administration of nicotinamide (230 mg/kg) and streptozotocin (65 mg/kg). Cystometry of isolated, denerv

[Hirayama disease in paediatrics: a clinical case report and review of the literature].

INTRODUCTION: Hirayama disease is a rare children's muscular atrophy that affects young Asian males, with muscular atrophy usually in one of the upper limbs that progresses slowly and later stabilises. It is diagnosed by means of electromyographic/electroneurographic with conduction speed studies (EMG/ENG-CS) and by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the spinal cord in a neutral position and with cervical flexion. Treatment is based on the cervical collar and surgery (severe cases). Very few studies have been conducted on patients at the paediatric age. CASE REPORT: We report the case of a 7

APP/SOD1 overexpressing mice present reduced neuropathic pain sensitivity.

There are controversies regarding pain expression in mentally disabled people, including Down syndrome patients. The aim of this study was to examine neuropathic pain-related behavior and peripheral nerve regeneration in mouse model of Down syndrome. Sciatic nerves of double transgenic mice, overexpressing both amyloid precursor protein (APP) and Cu/Zn superoxide dismutase (SOD1) genes, and FVB/N wild type mice were transected and immediately resutured. Evaluation of autotomy and functional recovery was carried out during 4-week follow-up. We found markedly less severe autotomy in transgenic a

Pitfalls in electrodiagnosis.

This review describes some of the factors that may lead to erroneous interpretations of electromyographic and nerve conduction studies. Such errors may be due either to technical or to biological factors, and it is imperative that the consequent limitations of the methods be considered in a diagnostic setting. Electrodiagnostic findings should always be interpreted in the clinical context, and since they are rarely specific for a particular disorder or pathology, it is necessary to satisfy several criteria to make a specific diagnosis. The aim of electromyographic examination is to ascertain w

[Idiopathic facial paralysis].

Although acute idiopathic facial paresis is often labelled "Bell's palsy", historical studies show that Nicolaus Anton Friedreich (1761-1836) from Würzburg was the first physician to describe the typical symptoms of the disorder in 1797, approximately 24 years prior to the paper published by Sir Charles Bell. Diagnostics has now improved to the extent that acute idiopathic facial palsy can more frequently be assigned to etiologies caused by inflammatory disorders. Herpes simplex virus type I and Borrelia burgdorferi are particularly relevant. Underestimation of the degree of paresis is, partic

The phenotypic manifestations of chromosome 17p11.2 duplication.

Clinical and electrophysiological investigations and nerve biopsies were carried out on 61 patients shown to have a chromosome 17p11.2 duplication (hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy-HMSN Ia). Of these, 50 showed a Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) phenotype and eight could be classified as having the Roussy-Lévy syndrome. Of the patients with a CMT phenotype, three had associated pyramidal signs and of these one had 'complicated' HMSN and also signs of cerebellar and bulbar involvement. Diaphragmatic weakness was present in three severely affected cases, one of whom also had denervation of the a

Sympathetic nervous system response to mechanical stress of the spinal column in rats.

The effects of mechanical stimulation of the spine on blood pressure, heart rate and the activity of selected sympathetic nerves (renal and adrenal) were examined in alpha-chloralose/urethane anesthetized rats. Spinal segments from T10 to T13 or from L4 to L7 were isolated from surrounding muscle and the upper and lower segments of the four segment units were fixed by means of spinal clamps. Forces from 0.5 to 3.0 kg were applied to the lateral aspect of the two mobile segments. Stimulations of the thoracic or the lumbar region produced large decreases in blood pressure (-29.8 +/- 3.1 mmHg) al

The Electrical Activity of a Denervated Ear : (Section of Otology).

The electrical response from the cochlea of a cat which had previously been denervated by intracranial crushing of the auditory nerve was submitted to a lengthy study, the results of which may be summarized as follows:-The responses to acoustical stimulation derived from electrodes placed on the round window margin and in the chin muscles were studied by means of an amplifier and cathode ray oscillograph, in the usual way. Transient stimuli whose polarity could be reversed were employed to demonstrate the absence of any electrical component of neural origin such as is invariably present in a n

Late administration of high-frequency electrical stimulation increases nerve regeneration without aggravating neuropathic pain in a nerve crush injury.

BACKGROUND: High-frequency transcutaneous neuromuscular electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) is currently used for the administration of electrical current in denervated muscle to alleviate muscle atrophy and enhance motor function; however, the time window (i.e. either immediate or delayed) for achieving benefit is still undetermined. In this study, we conducted an intervention of sciatic nerve crush injury using high-frequency TENS at different time points to assess the effect of motor and sensory functional recovery. RESULTS: Animals with left sciatic nerve crush injury received TENS treatm

Glial-derived growth factor and pleiotrophin synergistically promote axonal regeneration in critical nerve injuries.

UNLABELLED: The repair of nerve gap injuries longer than 3 cm is limited by the need to sacrifice donor tissue and the morbidity associated with the autograft gold standard, while decellularized grafts and biodegradable conduits are effective only in short nerve defects. The advantage of isogenic nerve implants seems to be the release of various growth factors by the denervated Schwann cells. We evaluated the effect of vascular endothelial growth factor, neurotrophins, and pleiotrophin (PTN) supplementation of multi-luminal conduits, in the repair of 3 and 4 cm nerve gaps in the rabbit peronea

Restoration of shoulder abduction by transfer of the spinal accessory nerve to suprascapular nerve through dorsal approach: a clinical study.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, transfer of the spinal accessory nerve to suprascapular nerve has become a routine procedure for restoration of shoulder abduction. However, the operation via the traditional supraclavicular anterior approach often leads to partial denervation of the trapezius muscle. The purpose of the study was to introduce transfer of the spinal accessory nerve through dorsal approach, using distal branch of the spinal accessory nerve, to repair the suprascapular nerve for restoration of shoulder abduction, and to observe its therapeutic effect. METHODS: From January to October

Behavioural and electrophysiological analysis of strabismus in cats: modern context.

We studied the effects of paralytic strabismus on visual behaviour and binocularity of cortical visual mechanisms by immobilization of one eye in adult cats. Visual discrimination abilities of the immobilized eye were significantly diminished despite extensive training with one or both eyes. The deficits are not caused by the immobilization itself but appear to reflect an adaptive mechanism to deal with double vision. The deficits with the immobilized eye persisted even after section of the optic chiasm, which effectively removes the direct cortical competition of the two eyes. Single-cell ele
