³H-deprenyl and ³H-PIB autoradiography show different laminar distributions of astroglia and fibrillar β-amyloid in Alzheimer brain.

BACKGROUND: The pathological features in Alzheimer's disease (AD) brain include the accumulation and deposition of β-amyloid (Aβ), activation of astrocytes and microglia and disruption of cholinergic neurotransmission. Since the topographical characteristics of these different pathological processes in AD brain and how these relate to each other is not clear, this motivated further exploration using binding studies in postmortem brain with molecular imaging tracers. This information could aid the development of specific biomarkers to accurately chart disease progression. RESULTS: In vitro bin

Inspiratory rhythm in airway smooth muscle tone.

In anesthetized paralyzed open-chested cats ventilated with low tidal volumes at high frequency, we recorded phrenic nerve activity, transpulmonary pressure (TPP), and either the tension in an upper tracheal segment or the impulse activity in a pulmonary branch of the vagus nerve. The TPP and upper tracheal segment tension fluctuated with respiration, with peak pressure and tension paralleling phrenic nerve activity. Increased end-tidal CO2 or stimulation of the carotid chemoreceptors with sodium cyanide increased both TPP and tracheal segment tension during the increased activity of the phren

Mixed toxin profiles in two new and one known species of Inocybe (Inocybaceae) from northern China.

Mushroom poisoning has become a serious food safety issue in China. Poisoning incidents caused by species of Inocybaceae have been continuously reported from tropical to temperate regions of China in recent years. Many species of Inocybaceae contain muscarine, which stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system; some also contain psilocybin, resulting in hallucinations, and a few even contain amatoxins. In this study, two new species of the I. aeruginascens group, Inocybe tumericolor and I. subaeruginascens, are described based on combined morphological evidence and multilocus phylogenetic ana…

Effects of a programmed reflexology therapy on sleep quality, insomnia, and fatigue among individuals with poor sleep quality: evidence for autonomic nervous system modulation.

Poor sleep quality is closely associated with autonomic dysregulation and increased risks of cardiovascular, metabolic, and mental disorders. Foot reflexology is a widely used complementary therapy; however, its physiological mechanisms and comparative efficacy remain insufficiently explored. This study aimed to compare the effects of manual reflexology treatment (MRT) and foot massage equipment (FEM) on autonomic nervous system function, sleep quality, insomnia severity, and fatigue in adults with poor sleep quality. Using a randomized crossover design, 32 participants with poor sleep quality

Utility of Heart Rate Variability and Exertional Task Completion During Recovery of Mild Traumatic Brain Injury in Active Duty Service Members.

INTRODUCTION: Primary care exertional testing is recommended for mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) management in active duty service members (ADSM) before return-to-duty (RTD), yet there are no validated standardized tasks with objective physiological measures. Impairments to the automatic nervous system (ANS) after mTBI may last beyond symptom resolution and impact readiness for duty. Assessment of ANS functioning (heart rate variability, HRV) could provide an objective measure of mTBI recovery. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eighteen ADSM with mTBI (2 weeks or less post-injury) and 18 age-matched

Mental health consequences of early life stress in children - The autonomic nervous system as a potential target for early detection and intervention?

Early life stress affects children worldwide, influencing behavioural, social, emotional, cognitive, and physical development. It is strongly associated with an increased risk of mental illness across the lifespan, with symptoms often emerging during childhood or adolescence. Parents experiencing acute and chronic stress may inadvertently contribute to adverse health outcomes in their children, as cumulative exposure to stress within the family unit can negatively impact both mental and physical well-being. Children exposed to parental stress and its associated emotional and physiological resp

Distance-dependent neuromodulation effect during thermal ablation for atrial fibrillation.

INTRODUCTION: Thermal atrial fibrillation (AF) ablation exerts an additive treatment effect on the cardiac autonomic nervous system (CANS). This effect is mainly reported during ablation of the right superior pulmonary vein (RSPV), modulating the right anterior ganglionated plexus (RAGP), which contains parasympathetic innervation to the sinoatrial node in the epicardial fat pad between RSPV and superior vena cava (SVC). However, a variable response to neuromodulation after ablation is observed, with little to no effect in some patients. Our objective was to assess clinical and anatomic predic

The contribution of autonomic mechanisms to pain in temporomandibular disorders: A narrative review.

BACKGROUND: Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are diagnosed based on symptom presentation and, like other functional pain disorders, often lack definitive pathology. There is a strong association between elevated stress levels and the severity of TMD-related pain, which suggests that alterations in autonomic tone may contribute to this pain condition. OBJECTIVES: This narrative review examines the association between altered autonomic function and pain in TMD. METHODS: Relevant articles were identified by searching PubMed and through the reference list of those studies. RESULTS: TMD suffere

Interictal Heart Rate Variability Analysis Reveals Lateralization of Cardiac Autonomic Control in Temporal Lobe Epilepsy.

Purpose: The temporal lobe, a critical hub for cognition, also plays a central role in the regulation of autonomic cardiovascular functions. Lesions in this area are usually associated with abnormalities in the regulation of heart rate (HR) and blood pressure (BP). The analysis of the heart rate variability (HRV) is useful to evaluate the cardiac parasympathetic nervous system activity. This study aims at comparing HRV changes occurring in two groups of patients suffering from Temporal Lobe Epilepsy (TLE). To that aim, we evaluated patients differentiated by the right or left location of the e…

Safety and Efficacy of Intermittent Bolus and Continuous Infusion Neostigmine for Acute Colonic Pseudo-Obstruction.

PURPOSE: To compare clinical response of intermittent bolus versus continuous infusion neostigmine for acute colonic pseudo-obstruction (ACPO). Acute colonic pseudo-obstruction occurs due to reduced colonic parasympathetic activity. Neostigmine is an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor that increases frequency of smooth muscle contraction by increasing acetylcholine at autonomic nervous system synapses. Although these administration modalities have been studied separately, they have never been compared. METHODS: This retrospective study compared bolus versus continuous infusion neostigmine for ACP
