Child maltreatment and age of alcohol and marijuana initiation in high-risk youth.

INTRODUCTION: Youth with a history of child maltreatment use substances and develop substance use disorders at rates above national averages. Thus far, no research has examined pathways from maltreatment to age of substance use initiation for maltreated youth. We examined the longitudinal impact of maltreatment in early childhood on age of alcohol and marijuana use initiation, and whether internalizing and externalizing behaviors at age 8 mediates the link between maltreatment and age of substance use initiation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data were drawn from the Longitudinal Studies of Child Ab

Serial pediatric symptom checklist screening in children with prenatal drug exposure.

OBJECTIVE: To examine screening results obtained by serial annual behavioral assessment of children with prenatal drug exposure. METHOD: The Maternal Lifestyle Study enrolled children with prenatal cocaine exposure (PCE) at birth for longitudinal assessments of developmental, behavioral, and health outcomes. At 8, 9, 10, 11, and 12 years of age, caregivers rated participants on the Pediatric Symptom Checklist (PSC). Serial PSC results were compared with an established broad-based behavioral measure at 9, 11, and 13 years. PSC results were analyzed for 1081 children who had at least 2 annual s

Individual and community-level determinates of risky sexual behaviors among sexually active unmarried men: A multilevel analysis of 2016 Ethiopian Demographic and Health Survey.

BACKGROUND: In Ethiopia, HIV/AIDS continues to be a major public health problem mostly due to the high prevalence of risky sexual behaviors. However, research on risky sexual behavior and its determinants among unmarried men (never married, widowed, and divorced) who are highly vulnerable to risky sexual behavior was limited. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the magnitude of risky sexual behavior and its determinants among non-married men using a nationally representative sample. METHODS: The analysis was done on 5680 sexually active unmarried men aged 15-59 years using data from the 201

Behavioral changes associated with epilepsy.

Epilepsy can be accompanied by changes in cognition, personality, affect, and other elements of behavior. There is no single epileptic constitution or personality complex. A unifying theme to the behavior in epilepsy is diversity. As one looks at the behavioral traits reported in epilepsy, a specific and consistent pattern is lacking. Rather, extremes of behavior are accentuated: sometimes in one direction, often in both directions. Changes in emotional state are prominent among behavioral features in epilepsy. Some authors describe a prominent deepening or increase in emotionality, whereas ot

The Association Between Prenatal Infection and Adolescent Behavior: Investigating Multiple Prenatal, Perinatal, and Childhood Second Hits.

OBJECTIVE: Exposure to infections during pregnancy may be a potential risk factor for later psychopathology, but large-scale epidemiological studies investigating associations between prenatal infection and long-term offspring behavioral problems in the general population are scarce. In our study, we aimed to investigate the following: (1) the association between prenatal infection and adolescent behavior, (2) putative underlying pathways (mediation), and (3) "second hits" interacting with prenatal infection to increase the risk of adolescent behavior problems (moderation). METHOD: Our study

Personality traits and personality problems in Korsakoff syndrome patients.

Personality research is of relevance because it provides insights into the psychological strengths and vulnerabilities of a person. Korsakoff's syndrome (KS) is a severe neuropsychiatric disorder following acute thiamine deficiency, usually as a consequence of alcohol-use disorders. Research on personality traits of KS patients is currently limited. The aim of the current exploratory study was therefore to examine the personality traits and problems of KS patients. We assessed self-reported and informant-reported personality traits and problems in institutionalized KS patients (n = 30). Result

Defecation problems in children with Hirschsprung's disease: a biopsychosocial approach.

Although most patients with operated Hirschsprung's disease (HD) have good continence in adulthood, a majority have postoperative defection problems during school age. Persistence of chronic constipation and/or incontinence may have considerable consequences for psychosocial development, parent-child interactions, quality of life, and the child's general condition. Considering these consequences, it is important to treat these problems as early as possible. From a biopsychosocial view, we developed a multidisciplinary treatment aimed at resolving defecation problems by teaching the child bowel

A trial of parent training for mothers being released from incarceration and their children.

Children of incarcerated mothers are considered at risk for disruptive behavior problems and later delinquency. Parenting may play a key role in this intergenerational transmission of delinquency. The present study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the Incredible Years parent training, enhanced with home visits, for (formerly) incarcerated mothers to prevent disruptive behavior problems in their 2- to 10-year-old children, by means of a nationwide randomized controlled trial. Mothers of 133 children (M age = 76.91 months; 48.9% boys) were assigned to an intervention, consisting of group s

Using Network Analysis to Understand the Associations Between Menopausal Symptoms and Mental Health in Women With Intellectual Disabilities.

BACKGROUND: Women with intellectual disabilities typically face high rates of mental health and communication difficulties. Given associations between menopause and mental health in the general population and the lack of research on this topic in women with intellectual disabilities, it is critical to investigate associations between menopause and mental health in this population. METHOD: Cross-sectional data were drawn from a cohort study in Ireland (n = 104). Measures included data on menopause, challenging behaviours and psychotropic medication. Associations between menopausal symptoms and

Celiac disease in children and adolescents with Down syndrome: behavioural, adaptive and sleep profiles.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with Down syndrome (DS) exhibit higher risk for celiac disease (CD) than general population. Although literature suggests CD could be associated with behavioural problems in both paediatric and adult age, such association has been poorly explored in children and adolescents DS. Therefore, the current study aimed to investigate differences in emotional/behavioural difficulties, adaptive skills and sleep problems between children with DS with and without CD. METHODS: Data were retrospectively collected from a database including data from 381 individuals with DS (3-18 yea

Aberrant behavior checklist in youth with Prader-Willi syndrome: Preliminary study of cross-sectional and longitudinal behavior characterization.

Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) is a rare genetic disorder caused by the loss of paternal genes on chromosome 15. The Aberrant Behavior Checklist (ABC) is a standardized rating scale for assessing problematic behaviors in persons with developmental disabilities. Our study aims to describe ABC scores in youth with PWS and track their change over time. The analysis included 69 patients. Mean ABC scores were compared in four age groups (5-8, 9-12, 13-16, and 17-22 years). A statistically significant difference was found only in the Irritability subscale, with lower scores in the 5-8 age group compare

Shank3 deletion in PV neurons is associated with abnormal behaviors and neuronal functions that are rescued by increasing GABAergic signaling.

BACKGROUND: Phelan-McDermid syndrome (PMS) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by developmental delay, intellectual disability, and autistic-like behaviors and is primarily caused by haploinsufficiency of SHANK3 gene. Currently, there is no specific treatment for PMS, highlighting the need for a better understanding of SHANK3 functions and the underlying pathophysiological mechanisms in the brain. We hypothesize that SHANK3 haploinsufficiency may lead to alterations in the inhibitory system, which could be linked to the excitatory/inhibitory imbalance observed in models of autism sp

Mental health and behavioural problems in adolescents conceived after ART.

STUDY QUESTION: Does mental health and behaviour differ between those conceived with and those conceived without ART? SUMMARY ANSWER: Our study observed less externalizing behaviour (delinquent/aggressive), and more parent-reported internalizing behaviour, as well as more (clinical) depression at age 14 years, in adolescents conceived after ART compared to their non-ART counterparts. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Health outcomes of ART-conceived offspring may differ from those conceived without ART, and previous studies have reported differences in behaviour and mental health, particularly in child

Conceptualizing Callous-Unemotional Traits in Preschool through Confirmatory Factor and Network Analysis.

Callous - unemotional (CU) traits are a key factor in understanding the persistence and severity of conduct problems. Most research has used confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) to examine the structure of CU traits; however, most CFA models have yielded marginally acceptable fit, and little research has examined the structure of CU traits in preschool. This gap highlights the need for a more nuanced approach in understanding the structure of CU traits during preschool via statistical examination of inter - item relationships (i.e., network analysis). Therefore, the current study used both CFA a
