[Strongyloides stercoralis: a neglected and latent threat].

Knowledge of tropical parasitic infections, such as Strongyloides stercoralis, remains essential given increased migration from endemic areas and rising international travel. S. stercoralis can persist silently for decades and cause severe disease upon reactivation. We describe two illustrative cases. A 86-year-old former tropical physician developed eosinophilic pneumonia, skin lesions, and sensory ataxia. Symptoms persisted despite corticosteroid therapy but resolved rapidly after empirical ivermectin. In contrast, a 57-year-old Liberian man with prior immunosuppression presented with hyperi

Anthelmintic activity of three selected ethnobotanical plant extracts against Strongyloides venezuelensis.

The agropastoral farmers have employed Turraea vogelii(TVL),Senna podocarpa(SPL), and Jaundea pinnata (JPL) leaves for treating various diseases, including intestinal parasites in livestock and the human population in Nigeria. Gastrointestinal nematodes are highly significant to livestock production and people's health, and natural products are interesting as sources of new drugs. In this study, we evaluated the effectiveness of extracts derived from these plants in treating parasitic infections using third-stage infective larvae (L3) of Strongyloides venezuelensis. We obtained crude extracts

An evaluation of a lateral flow rapid diagnostic test for Strongyloides stercoralis infection.

Strongyloides stercoralis in humans often presents as a chronic asymptomatic infection. Diagnosis can be challenging due to the limited sensitivity of faecal-based parasitological techniques. A prototype lateral flow rapid diagnostic test (RDT) for the detection of specific antibodies against Strongyloides stercoralis (SsRapid) was evaluated using 143 samples from the serum bank of the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute. Group 1 (n = 30) comprised serum samples from larvae-positive individuals; the RDT's diagnostic sensitivity was 97 % (29/30). Group II comprised serum samples from pat

Strongyloides stercoralis infection induces gut dysbiosis in chronic kidney disease patients.

BACKGROUND: Strongyloides stercoralis infection typically causes severe symptoms in immunocompromised patients. This infection can also alter the gut microbiota and is often found in areas where chronic kidney disease (CKD) is common. However, the relationship between S. stercoralis and the gut microbiome in chronic kidney disease (CKD) is not understood fully. Recent studies have shown that gut dysbiosis plays an important role in the progression of CKD. Hence, this study aims to investigate the association of S. stercoralis infection and gut microbiome in CKD patients. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL

Clinical Performance of Real-Time Polymerase Chain Reaction for Strongyloides stercoralis Compared with Serology in a Nonendemic Setting.

Strongyloides stercoralis is a nematode endemic to subtropical and tropical regions that may cause asymptomatic carriage, peripheral eosinophilia, cutaneous, gastrointestinal, and pulmonary disease, or hyperinfection syndrome. Conventional diagnostic methods for strongyloidiasis include feces microscopy and culture, with low sensitivity in chronic infection due to the low helminth burden, and serology, which may be prone to false-negative results with immunocompromise and false-positive results with other infections and immunological disorders. We evaluated a laboratory-developed real-time pol…

Mapping the global distribution of Strongyloides stercoralis and hookworms by ecological niche modeling.

BACKGROUND: The WHO has established a control strategy for Strongyloides stercoralis in school-aged children as well as targets and to maintain control programs for Ascaris lumbricoides, Trichuris trichiura and hookworms. For an efficient development of control programs, it is necessary to know the target countries around the world, as well as the areas within each country where efforts should be focused. Therefore, maps that provide information on the areas at risk for soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections on a national and sub-national scale would allow for a better allocation of resour

Comparative transcriptomics gives insights into the evolution of parasitism in Strongyloides nematodes at the genus, subclade and species level.

Strongyloides spp., gastrointestinal nematode parasites of humans and other animals, have genetically identical parasitic and free-living adult life cycle stages. This is an almost unique feature amongst nematodes and comparison of these two stages can provide insights into the genetic basis and evolution of Strongyloides nematode parasitism. Here, we present RNAseq data for S. venezuelensis, a parasite of rodents, and identify genes that are differentially expressed in parasitic and free-living life cycle stages. Comparison of these data with analogous RNAseq data for three other Strongyloide

Disseminated infection with Strongyloides stercoralis in a diabetic patient.

A 58-year-old male diabetic who was operated for carcinoma larynx 4 years back was admitted with exertional dyspnoea and bilateral leg swelling for the past 2 years. Over the last 2 months, there was a progressive worsening of symptoms. Echocardiography done 2 years back showed pericardial effusion. Echo done during the current admission also showed pericardial effusion with preserved left ventricular function; cytological examination of the pericardial fluid showed larvae of Strongyloides stercoralis. He was treated with antinematodal drugs. A follow-up echo done at discharge showed no perica

Finding ancient parasite larvae in a sample from a male living in late 17th century Korea.

Parasitological examination of samples from tombs of the Korean Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910) could be helpful to researchers in understanding parasitic infection prevalence in pre-industrial Korean society. Whereas most of our previous parasitological studies revealed the presence of ancient parasite eggs in coprolites of Korean mummies, a sample from a man living in late 17th century Korea proved to be relatively unique in possessing what appeared to be several species of parasite larvae. The larvae identified included Strongyloides stercoralis and Trichostrongylus spp., along with eggs of Asca

Strongyloides stercoralis hyperinfection presenting with symptoms mimicking acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Hyperinfection syndrome with Strongyloides stercoralis is not uncommon in immunocompromised patients. We present 2 fatal cases of Strongyloides hyperinfection with initial presentation mimicking acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Both cases had a history of COPD and had received systemic steroid treatment before or during admission. The initial chest radiograph in both of these cases showed diffuse axial interstitial pattern. The sputum examinations of Gram stain both yielded larvae of Strongyloides stercoralis precipitously. Case 1 developed acute respiratory

The reversibility of constraints on size and fecundity in the parasitic nematode Strongyloides ratti.

The size and fecundity of parasitic nematodes are constrained by the host immune response. For the parasitic nematode of rats, Strongyloides ratti, parasitic females infecting immunized rats are smaller and less fecund than those infecting naïve rats. Here, we investigated whether these constraints on size and fecundity are life-long. This was done by comparison of worms from different immunization and immunosuppression regimes. It was found that the per capita fecundity of parasitic females of S. ratti is fully reversed, but that their size is only partially reversed, if previously immunized

Eosinophilic oophoritis: association with positive Strongyloides stercoralis serology and clinical response to ivermectin.

BACKGROUND: Localized eosinophilic infiltration causing ovarian dysfunction is an unusual clinical problem. CASE: We report a 16-year-old girl with abdominal pain, ovarian cysts, and biopsy-proven eosinophilic oophoritis, which resulted in right oophorectomy. Subsequently, a large cyst developed in the left ovary, causing abdominal pain that was worse at the time of her menses, and biopsy again showed numerous eosinophilic microabscesses. Unexpectedly, a parasite serology test to Strongyloides stercoralis was positive, although stool tests for ova and parasites were negative and the total IgE
