Tumarkin attacks are a feature of Ménière's disease that generate a significant degree of disability. The surprising nature of these events is the main reason behind their associated morbidity. In this study we set out to evaluate auditory and vestibular function, as well as disability, in a population of patients who suffer Tumarkin attacks. We found that patients who suffer Tumarkin attacks are more disabled and experience severer and more frequent autonomic symptoms and that their hearing level is significantly worse in the asymptomatic ear, especially at low frequencies. Accordingly, we co

OBJECTIVE: To establish the normative data of sinusoidal harmonic acceleration test (SHAT) and evaluate the value of clinical application.
METHODS: One hundred and twenty normal persons, 21 Meniere's disease patients, 2 bilateral vestibular peripheral lesion patients, 15 unilateral vestibular peripheral lesion patients and 10 central lesion patients were tested with SHAT.
RESULTS: The calibration time was longer in the older persons. The phase decreased with the frequency, and the gain increased with the frequency, but the reliability of the re-test of the phase was better in the lower frequ

UNLABELLED: The study of oculomotricity is done by the evaluation of three systems: saccade eye movements (MOS), optokinetic nystagmus (NO) and smooth pursuit eye movement (MORL). The joint action of these three systems allows the visual field's establishment in different movement situations.
AIM: To compare the value of oculomotricity in normal adults and children to confirm, or not if it is viable to use the same parameters of adults normality to children's exams interpretation.
STUDY DESIGN: Clinical with transversal cohort.
MATERIAL AND METHOD: We studied MOS, NO and MORL in 50 normal c

Fundamental data for the establishment of a new clinical testing procedure for patients suffering from equilibrium disorders were developed. A mathematical model that predicts vestibulo-ocular reflex responses (eye velocities) to three-dimensional head movements was investigated. An experimental set-up permitting the simultaneous recording of the head and eye movements was developed to investigate the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) during everyday activities. The test results show that computer simulation of the VOR occurring during complex movements is indeed possible. The model was able to pr

We have developed an interactive database for vertigo than can be used to assist in the diagnostic procedure and to store the data in a form of a database. The database offers the possibility to split and reunite the collected information in a desired way. The database contains detailed information about patient history, symptoms and findings in neurotological, audiological and imaging tests. The symptoms are classified into three sets of questions: vertigo (including postural instability), hearing loss and tinnitus, and provoking factors. Confounding disorders are screened. The neurotological

Pregnant rats were fed a vitamin A-depleted diet. After weaning, 40 litters (10 controls, 30 experimental) were divided into eight groups, four female and four male. All groups were given the same diet. The control groups (male and female) received 100 IU vitamin A/day, the deficient groups only a maintenance dose of 1-2 IU vitamin A/day. One female and one male group were repleted with vitamin A after the 27th day of life and two further groups of both sexes were repleted after the 49th day of life. After the 23th day of life all litters were trained for the Rail Test and after the 27th day t

This review is based on the clinical experience with 7 patients and a total of 171 additional cases described in literature. Clinical features are presented of this "benign" cerebellar encephalopathy, which occurs preferably in association with viral infections, neuroblastomas or rarely carcinomas. Numerous descriptions of single cases stress a heterogeneous variety of other diseases which possibly may cause this syndrome. Special emphasis is put on the electronystagmographic documentation of eye movements with follow up of the spontaneous recovery over several years. The eye movement characte

Results of otoneurological examinations of 16 patients (from 6 families) with hereditary cerebellar ataxia have been analyzed. It has been found that all the patients exhibit vestibular function disturbances that manifest clinically by the truncal and supranuclear syndrome. Of other otoneurological signs the most frequent is dysphagia (in 10 out of the 16 patients) which is due not only to the dyscoordination of the glottal muscles, but also to a paresis of the epiglottis, this paresis also being a sign of supranuclear pathology. The absence of the otoneurological disturbances in practically h

Hearing loss (HL) occurs in approximately 2 out of every 1,000 births and is genetic in origin in approximately 50% of cases. This high incidence coupled with the increasing number of genes implicated in HL and the trend toward universal newborn screening led to the establishment of the Genetics of Hearing Loss Clinic at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia to manage the diagnosis, genetic screening, and counseling of families with an affected child. To date 500 individuals have been evaluated from 1999 to 2004. To determine the cause of their HL and screen for syndromic forms of HL, indivi

Vestibular function tests could not serve as a differential point; Cerebral MRI might be helpful to differential diagnosis. BACKGROUND: The DHI is a widely used questionnaire for the evaluation of the self-reported disability in patients with dizziness and balance problems.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationship between the DHI scores and demographic, symptomatic and diagnostic parameters.
METHODS: Retrospective study in 568 patients with balance problems.
RESULTS: We observed a total of 61.3% of patients with moderate (DHI total score between 30 and 59) to severe (DHI total score between 60 and 100) disability.Patients with long-standing complaints (lasting longer than 3 months) experience their self-report

AIM: Postoperative vertigo is a well-known complication after cochlear implantation. The aim of the study was to investigate whether the electrical stimulation of the auditory structures via cochlear implant electrodes can affect the vestibular system and induce vertigo.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In the first group, 114 patients were surveyed retrospectively via questionnaires to evaluate the occurrence and frequency of sound-induced vertigo after cochlear implantation. In the second group of 26 patients, the effects of electrical stimulation on the vestibular system were studied prospectively.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Anatomic variants of the jugular bulb (JB) are common; however, abnormalities such as large high riding JB and JB diverticulum (JBD) are uncommon. Rarely, the abnormal JB may erode into the inner ear. The goal of our study is to report a large series of patients with symptomatic JB erosion into the inner ear.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective review in an academic medical center.
METHODS: Eleven patients with JB abnormality eroding into the inner ear were identified on computed tomography (CT) scan of the temporal bone.
RESULTS: Age at presentation was from 5 years to 82 ye

Numerous tissue transplantations have demonstrated that otocysts can develop into normal ears in any location in all vertebrates tested thus far, though the pattern of innervation of these transplanted ears has largely been understudied. Here, expanding on previous findings that transplanted ears demonstrate capability of local brainstem innervation and can also be innervated themselves by efferents, we show that inner ear afferents grow toward the spinal cord mostly along existing afferent and efferent fibers and preferentially enter the dorsal spinal cord. Once in the dorsal funiculus of the
