The clinical findings during a major epidemic of Q-fever which affected 415 people in the Val de Bagnes (Valais, Switzerland) in the autumn of 1983 are reported. Q-fever symptoms were evident in 191 cases but inconspicuous or absent in 224 cases. The symptoms most frequently reported were prolonged high fever, headaches, severe exhaustion, loss of appetite, cough and myalgia. Amongst disorders which accompany acute Q-fever, pneumonia and granulomatous hepatitis are very frequent, while myopericarditis and glomerulonephritis are less frequently observed. This study is aimed at searching for the presence of circulating antibodies against frozen sections of human testis, ovary and trophoblast in patients that had spermatic cord torsion. Sixty-eight sera samples were studied. Nine patients (13.2%) were positive for organ specific anti-testis autoantibodies. The additional evidence of the existence of antigenic differences between the early virus-induced antigen and structural retrovirus D antigens as well as antigens from human fetus normal tissues was obtained by quantitative complement fixation micromethod using radioactive chromium (51Cr-CFT). In examinations of 13 specimens of cancer tumours and fibroadenomas of the female mammary glands the new antigen was found in 8 cases, including 4 cancer tumours where this antigen could not be detected by the conventional CFT.

Delayed type hypersensitivity (DTH) was studied in the macrophage migration inhibition test, antibody titers in the CFT and functional activity of spleen macrophages, obtained from guinea-pigs infected with R. conori, in cell cultures. No direct correlation between antibody synthesis and functional macrophage activity accompanied by the development of DTH was revealed. The most pronounced protective function of macrophages could be observed during the decrease of antibody titers and the extinction of DTH.

Rats experimentally infected with Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense developed a syndrome characterized by anemia, splenomegaly, and glomerulonephritis. Serologic evaluation revealed that the syndrome was accompanied by the presence of 3 autoantibodies--cold-active hemagglutinin, immunoconglutinin, and antibody to fibrinogen/fibrin products. A series of 39 human brain tumors has been screened for the presence or absence of SV40-related T antigen by the direct and indirect immunoperoxidase methods. Two tumors of ependymal origin (malignant ependymoma, choroid plexus papilloma) revealed markedly positive nuclear staining for T antigen both in vivo and in vitro. The relationship of these tumors to their experimental counterparts inducible by recent human papovavirus isolates is discussed.

Intestinal tract infection by Chlamydia psittaci was demonstrated in one cattle herd by isolation from faecal specimens, using embryonated eggs. Such infections were observed in all animals younger than 12 months, in 60% of the heifers and in none of the adult cows. Over the past 10 years, it has been well established that Crohn's disease may involve any segment of the gastrointestinal tract from the mouth to the anus and may also cause destructive extraintestinal lesions. Extensive cutaneous ulceration has recently been recognized as one of the rare extraintestinal complications. A case of chronic vulvar ulceration due to Crohn's disease is reported. The clinical manifestations and management of such a lesion are discussed.

Antibody to a breast cancer antigen was detected by immunodiffusion or complement fixation in at least one serum sample in 46% of 84 patients with a diagnosis of carcinoma, 34% of 96 patients with fibrocystic disease and 25% of 44 patients with fibroadenoma. The attenuated M-44 strain of Coxiella burneti was heated to free it of adventitious agents that may have been present. Parallel titrations of the strain before and after heating indicated that the virulence for guinea pigs was markedly decreased. Guinea pigs immunized with the strain derived after heat treatment were protected from the effects of challenge with C. burneti in either phase I or II.
