Single-cell transcriptomic analysis of pea shoot development and cell-type-specific responses to boron deficiency.

Understanding how nutrient stress impacts plant growth is fundamentally important to the development of approaches to improve crop production under nutrient limitation. Here we applied single-cell RNA sequencing to shoot apices of Pisum sativum grown under boron (B) deficiency. We identified up to 15 cell clusters based on the clustering of gene expression profiles and verified cell identity with cell-type-specific marker gene expression. Different cell types responded differently to B deficiency. Specifically, the expression of photosynthetic genes in mesophyll cells (MCs) was down-regulated …

Biocontrol Potential of Endophytic Streptomyces malaysiensis 8ZJF-21 From Medicinal Plant Against Banana Fusarium Wilt Caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense Tropical Race 4.

Banana (Musa spp.) is an important fruit crop cultivated in most tropical countries. Banana Fusarium wilt caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense tropical race 4 (Foc TR4) is the most destructive fungal disease. Biocontrol using endophytic microorganisms is considered as a safety and sustainable strategy. Actinomycetes have a potential for the production of diverse metabolites. Isolation of endophytic actinomycetes with high efficiency and broad-spectrum antagonism is key for exploring biocontrol agents. Our previous study showed that a total of 144 endophytic actinomycetes were isolated f

The nematode serotonin-gated chloride channel MOD-1: A novel target for anthelmintic therapy.

Anthelmintics are used to treat human and veterinary parasitic diseases and to reduce crop and livestock production loss associated with parasitosis. The free-living nematode Caenorhabditis elegans, a model system for anthelmintic drug discovery, has a serotonin (5-HT)-gated chloride channel, MOD-1, which belongs to the Cys-loop receptor family and modulates locomotory and behavioral functions. Since MOD-1 is unique to nematodes, it is emerging as an attractive anthelmintic drug target, but details of MOD-1 function are unclear. Here, we revealed novel aspects of MOD-1 function from the molecu

Inhibition of multiple defense responsive pathways by CaWRKY70 transcription factor promotes susceptibility in chickpea under Fusarium oxysporum stress condition.

BACKGROUND: Suppression and activation of plant defense genes is comprehensively regulated by WRKY family transcription factors. Chickpea, the non-model crop legume suffers from wilt caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. ciceri Race1 (Foc1), defense response mechanisms of which are poorly understood. Here, we attempted to show interaction between WRKY70 and several downstream signaling components involved in susceptibility/resistance response in chickpea upon challenge with Foc1. RESULTS: In the present study, we found Cicer arietinum L. WRKY70 (CaWRKY70) negatively governs multiple defense res

Lufenuron induces reproductive toxicity and genotoxic effects in pregnant albino rats and their fetuses.

Insecticides and other agrochemicals have become indispensable components of the agricultural system to ensure a notable increase in crop yield and food production. As a natural consequence, chemical residues result in significantly increased contamination of both terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. The present study evaluated the teratogenic, genotoxic, and oxidative stress effects of residual-level lufenuron exposure on pregnant rats during the organogenesis gestational period of both mother and fetus. The tested dams were divided into three groups; control (untreated), low-dose group (orall

Identification of soybean Bradyrhizobium strains used in commercial inoculants in Brazil by MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry.

Biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) with the soybean crop probably represents the major sustainable technology worldwide, saving billions of dollars in N fertilizers and decreasing water pollution and the emission of greenhouse gases. Accordingly, the identification of strains occupying nodules under field conditions represents a critical step in studies that are aimed at guaranteeing increased BNF contribution. Current methods of identification are mostly based on serology, or on DNA profiles. However, the production of antibodies is restricted to few laboratories, and to obtain DNA profiles o

Bacterial communities associated with anthracnose symptomatic and asymptomatic leaves of guarana, an endogenous tropical crop, and their pathogen antagonistic effects.

Plants are colonized by diverse microorganisms that can substantially impact their health and growth. Understanding bacterial diversity and the relationships between bacteria and phytopathogens may be key to finding effective biocontrol agents. We evaluated the bacterial community associated with anthracnose symptomatic and asymptomatic leaves of guarana, a typical tropical crop. Bacterial communities were assessed through culture-independent techniques based on extensive 16S rRNA sequencing, and cultured bacterial strains were evaluated for their ability to inhibit the growth of Colletotrichu

Pastoralists' Vulnerability to Trypanosomiasis in Maasai Steppe.

Trypanosomiasis is a neglected tropical disease of both livestock and humans. Although pastoral communities of the Maasai Steppe have been able to adapt to trypanosomiasis in the past, their traditional strategies are now constrained by changes in climate and land regimes that affect their ability to move with their herds and continually shape the communities' vulnerability to trypanosomiasis. Despite these constraints, information on communities' vulnerability and adaptive capacity to trypanosomiasis is limited. A cross-sectional study was therefore conducted in Simanjiro and Monduli district

Occurrence, fate, and environmental loss of antiparasitic veterinary drugs in animal waste.

Antiparasitic veterinary drugs, specifically anthelmintics, anticoccidials and ectoparasiticides, are increasingly recognised as global environmental contaminants, entering agroecosystems primarily via animal excreta and accumulating in manure and slurry before transfer to soils, water bodies and crops. This review provides a comprehensive synthesis of these drug classes, covering usage patterns, excretion and persistence dynamics, occurrence in manure and slurry, within-manure transformation pathways, environmental fate and transport pathways, ecotoxicological effects on non-target organism,

Nano-biochar regulates soil enzymatic activities and nitric oxide signaling to improve photosynthesis and nutrient balance in Brassica napus under salt stress: Implications for precision agriculture.

Salinity stress is a critical abiotic constraint that impairs crop productivity across both irrigated and rainfed agroecosystems. In recent years, nanotechnology has gained considerable attention in agriculture due to its potential to enhance plant tolerance to abiotic stresses. Although nano-biochar (nano-BC) has been widely investigated for improving soil fertility, limited information is available regarding its effects on Brassica napus L. (rapeseed) under salinity stress. The present study evaluated the impact of nano-BC on rapeseed growth, photosynthetic performance, antioxidant defense,

Valorisation of the Halophyte Cakile maritima as a Food Resource for Human Consumption.

Increasing soil salinisation challenges food production, since most crops are highly sensitive to salinity. The identification of wild halophytes adapted to saline environments with nutritional value represents a promising strategy for food production on salt-affected farmlands. Assessing the nutritional potential of such species requires evaluating their proximate composition, mineral profile, and antioxidant properties. In parallel, citizen-science approaches complement and enhance scientific research by actively engaging potential final consumers in the research process, thereby improving t

Culture conditions and microbial interactions shape VOC profiles and reveal 6-pentyl-α-pyrone and 2-oxindole as modulators of Colletotrichum gloeosporioides growth and pathogenicity.

Colletotrichum gloeosporioides, the causal agent of anthracnose, significantly reduces the productivity of high-value crops, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are gaining attention as a disease-management approach. This study assessed how nutrient sources and microbial interaction systems shape VOC-mediated antagonism against C. gloeosporioides. Culture medium strongly affected antifungal performance, with Luria-Bertani (LB) promoting up to a 4.28-fold increase in inhibition compared with Potato Dextrose Agar (PDA). Interaction systems also shaped antagonism: bipartite systems generated up

Effect of fertilizing on the productivity of pregnant and lactating queens, growth and development of their offspring.

An urgent problem in the agricultural science of livestock production is the adequate feeding of the queens of farm animals, in particular sheep kept on year-round pasture, especially in the second half of pregnancy and the first half of lactation. These periods are the most stressful, since the uterus does not receive enough necessary nutrients for the normal functioning of the body, embryonic and post-embryonic development of the offspring. In this regard, the purpose of our research was to increase the usefulness of the diet queens by carrying out additional feeding crushed barley with the
