Secondary infection and protease activity causing melting of the corneal stroma are always concerns in patients with corneal ulcers. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine the protective effect of alpha-lipoic acid against oxidative damage in rabbit conjunctiva and cornea exposed to ultraviolet radiation.
METHODS: 20 rabbits weighing 2,500- 3,000 g were used, and we divided them into 4 groups with 5 randomly selected rabbits. The rabbits were exposed to 2 J/cm(2)/h of ultraviolet A radiation (UVA) in the range of 320-405 nm for 12 h per day within 90 days. The control group did not undergo any procedure, the UVA group was only exposed to UVA radiation. The PUVA group was treated with 8-methoxypsoralen and UVA.

BACKGROUND: Triolein emulsion is under investigation for supplemental use to open the blood-brain barrier during chemotherapy. The effects of triolein emulsion on the blood-retinal barrier (BRB) were investigated.
METHODS: Fat emboli were induced in 20 cats by injecting triolein emulsion through the carotid artery. At 30 min, 4, 12 and 48 h after embolization, electroretinography (ERG) and fluorescein angiography (FA) were performed. The eyeballs were enucleated for transmission electron-microscopic study.

We are using Cobalt 60 plaques at Curie Institute since 1968 for the treatment of malignant choroidal melanoma. We reviewed a series of 79 patients treated between 1982 and 1984 with a minimal follow up of 5 years. Tumors thickness varies between 2 and 11 mm with a mean thickness of 5.7 mm. From 49 eyes enucleated for retinoblastoma, two new cell lines, WERI-Rb24 (W-24) and WERI-Rb27 (W-27), were established in long-term culture (greater than 5 years). PURPOSE: To record the axial strain field in the cornea directly after creating a stromal tunnel and implanting an intracorneal ring segment (ICRS).
METHODS: Freshly enucleated porcine eyes were obtained and assigned to either ICRS implantation, tunnel creation only, or virgin control groups. Immediately after manual tunnel creation and ICRS positioning, the entire eye globe was mounted on a customized holder and intraocular pressure (IOP) was adjusted to 15 mm Hg. Then, IOP was inreased to 20 mm Hg, in steps of 1 mm Hg. At each step, an optical coherence tomography volume scan was recorded.

PURPOSE: To compare limbal and pars plana silicone oil removal (SOR) in aphakic eyes and to evaluate the acute effect of silicone oil flow to the corneal endothelium.
