Epidermal Langerhans' cells in chronic eczematous dermatitis of the palms treated with PUVA and UVB.

Epidermal Langerhans' cells (LC) were studied in patients with chronic eczematous dermatitis of the palms. The monoclonal antibodies anti-Leu 6 and anti-HLA-DR were used, and the cells visualized with an immunoperoxidase technique. Increased numbers of LC were found in allergic contact dermatitis as well as in irritant contact dermatitis and hyperkeratotic dermatitis of the palms. The increased number of epidermal LC in lesional skin may facilitate presentation of exogenous or endogenous antigens to activated T-cells. One hand was treated with PUVA or UVB and the other hand served as a non-exp

Acquired pachydermatoglyphy. A cutaneous sign of internal malignancy.

A 70-year-old man with hypertrophic osteoartropathy secondary to a squamous cell carcinoma of the lung presented a distinctive pattern of late-onset bilateral palmar keratoderma. A yellowish rugose appearance with accentuation of normal ridges and sulci (pachydermatoglyphy) involving the palms was observed. The differential diagnosis and the clinical relevance of acquired pachydermatoglyphy as a cutaneous marker of internal malignancy are discussed.

Actinic damage in the skin of patients on haemodialysis for chronic renal failure.

Seventy-nine patients on long-term haemodialysis for chronic renal failure were interviewed and examined as to ethnic origin, actinic habits and the occurrence of blisters, skin fragility and slow healing of the skin of the dorsal part of the hands. On clinical examination, the 6 patients (7.5%) with blisters of the dorsal part of the hands had more damaged skin at that site than would be expected for their age. They also tended to be predominantly of English descent with blue eyes, poorer skin tanning ability and increased net exposure to sunlight. A skin imprint method for the grading of act

[Toxic contact dermatitis in hairdresser trainees: study of therapy with steroid-free, pH-stabilized emollients].

In a pilot study on 869 trainee hairdressers eczematous changes of the hands, presenting as chronic toxic contact eczema, were found in 42-55% of the investigated persons. In a subsequent therapeutic study involving 144 trainee hairdressers who had marked chronic toxic contact eczema, it was shown that regular use of pH-stabilized creams and ointments and use of non-alkaline soaps are effective and the use of cortisone ointments should not be necessary. It was demonstrated that 70% of the probands showed clear improvement in eczematous changes as controlled by colour changes in the nitrazine y

Children with Atopic Dermatitis Should Always be Patch-tested if They Have Hand or Foot Dermatitis.

Atopic dermatitis is the most common chronic inflammatory disease among children in industrialised countries. Many factors influence this disease in a negative way and contact allergy is one such factor. The aim of the study was to examine the frequency of contact allergy among children with the diagnosis atopic dermatitis. Contact allergy was found in 22/82 children (26.8%), the most common from Amerchol L101 (11.0%), potassium dichromate (7.3%), and nickel sulfate (4.9%). A statistically significant difference in contact allergy frequency was demonstrated for those with hand and/or foot ecze

Unveiling Lepromatous Leprosy in a Non-endemic Region: A Case of Delayed Diagnosis and Effective ROM (Rifampin, Ofloxacin, and Minocycline) Therapy.

Leprosy, or Hansen's disease, is a chronic granulomatous infection caused primarily by Mycobacterium leprae. Although its global incidence has declined since the introduction of multidrug therapy (MDT), the disease remains endemic in regions such as India, Brazil, and Indonesia. Additionally, sporadic cases continue to occur in non-endemic areas, including rural areas of the United States, due to migration and travel. We report a 62-year-old male who presented with erythematous, edematous plaques on the arms and trunk, along with progressive hand numbness. He also had a history of frequent tra

Ecthyma amidst the global monkeypox outbreak: A key differential? -A case series.

BACKGROUND: Ecthyma is a deeper form of impetigo involving the epidermis and dermis causing ulcerative plaques. Pathogens commonly responsible for the disease (group A beta-hemolytic streptococcus and Staphylococcus aureus) typically afflicts children, presenting during early stages with skin lesions that can closely resemble other vesicular and ulcerative dermatoses, such as those observed in mpox infection. The ongoing global outbreak of monkeypox has escalated the urgency for clinicians to accurately differentiate between these conditions due to their overlapping dermatological manifestatio

Hand, foot and scrotal blisters in a patient with cancer receiving oral chemotherapy.

Tyrosine kinase inhibitors are novel antineoplastic drugs that make use of the molecular abnormalities that have been discovered in certain types of tumours. These agents are associated with important dermatological side effects. This case report discusses an atypical presentation of the hand-foot syndrome in one patient treated with sorafenib. A 78-year-old man, recently started on sorafenib for the treatment of hepatocarcinoma with lung metastasis, presented to the emergency room with painful blistering lesions on the palms, soles and scrotum for 1 week. A punch biopsy was performed and sora

Clinical implementation of a scrubless chlorhexidine/ethanol pre-operative surgical hand rub.

The objective of surgical scrubbing is to reduce the bioburden on the hands of the surgical team in hope that if gloves are punctured or torn, the number of bacteria released at the operation site will be minimal and therefore reduce the risk of site infection. Long procedures with scrubbing and soaping can, however, be counterproductive because with repetition they tend to cause skin abrasions, damages and injuries without further reducing the risk of bacterial release. Within a general review of OR processes, it was decided to substitute to the standard surgical scrub a "new" scrubless pre-o
