irAE.AI: AI-powered exploration of real-world immune-related adverse events.

OBJECTIVES: Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) have revolutionized cancer treatment, but their clinical benefit is limited by the onset of immune-related adverse events (irAEs). Real-world pharmacovigilance data, such as the FDA's Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) database, offer the scale needed to better characterize and understand these toxicities. However, extracting cohorts and normalizing complex fields requires expertise in data preprocessing, technical terminology harmonization, and programming. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We curated an oncology-specific FAERS dataset of ICI-treated

Clinical and MRI models predicting amyloid deposition in progressive aphasia and apraxia of speech.

Beta-amyloid (Aβ) deposition can be observed in primary progressive aphasia (PPA) and progressive apraxia of speech (PAOS). While it is typically associated with logopenic PPA, there are exceptions that make predicting Aβ status challenging based on clinical diagnosis alone. We aimed to determine whether MRI regional volumes or clinical data could help predict Aβ deposition. One hundred and thirty-nine PPA (n = 97; 15 agrammatic, 53 logopenic, 13 semantic and 16 unclassified) and PAOS (n = 42) subjects were prospectively recruited into a cross-sectional study and underwent speech/language asse

[Artificial intelligence in health education: blessing or curse?].

Introduction: ChatGPT is a large language model developed by OpenAI that has brought significant advances in natural language processing. With GPT-4.0, the model is capable of human-level conversations, which is particularly useful in education and research. In healthcare education, students can practice patient admission in virtual situations, receiving real-time feedback. It also allows the personalisation of educational materials, tailored to the individual needs of students. Objective: The aim of this study is to demonstrate the potentials of ChatGPT, i.e., the application of artificial in

The association between older adult abuse and emergency department attendance and mental health service use.

INTRODUCTION: Older adult abuse is associated with a higher risk of mental health disorders but to date older adult abuse has not been investigated as a predictor of mental healthcare outcomes. The purpose of this study was to systematically ascertain recorded abuse and analyse its consequences in older people receiving mental healthcare. METHODS: In a large South London mental healthcare data platform, recorded older adult abuse was ascertained using natural language processing algorithms during the first 3 months of contact and investigated in relation to risk of subsequent emergency depart

Child-Directed Speech Is Semantically Constrained: Evidence From Metaphoricity and Concreteness.

Child-directed speech (CDS) is widely theorized to provide a structured scaffold for early language acquisition, yet the semantic properties of this register remain insufficiently quantified. In particular, it remains unclear how figurative language and semantic grounding interact within caregiver input to stabilize early form-meaning mappings. We present a large-scale computational analysis of metaphoricity and lexical concreteness in a naturalistic corpus of CDS, evaluated against a size-matched baseline of adult-directed speech (ADS). Using a token-level metaphor detection model and human-i

Contextualized sensorimotor norms: Multi-dimensional measures of sensorimotor strength for ambiguous English words, in context.

Embodied theories of language emphasize the role of sensorimotor experience in linguistic knowledge. Central to testing these theories is the creation of large datasets of linguistic norms, which contain judgments about a word's sensorimotor associations and can be used to predict human behavioral or brain data - sometimes in contrast to competing variables, such as those derived from distributional language models. Yet many of these datasets contain judgments about words in isolation, despite the fact that most words are ambiguous, making it difficult to determine which meaning of a word is c

The AI-augmented researcher: Optimizing systematic reviews in ergonomics.

BackgroundThe emergence of Academic Artificial Intelligence (AAI) agents is reshaping Systematic Literature Reviews (SLR) by expanding evidence screening and synthesis beyond Boolean, metadata-based searches, but its use requires a clear, PRISMA-aligned human oversight model to avoid compromising research integrity.ObjectiveThis opinion article proposes the "AI-augmented researcher" as a multidimensional framework that synergizes human analytical rigor with Large Language Models (LLMs). Using a physical ergonomics case study, the paper establishes a normative integration strategy that demonstr…

Abdominal and Pelvic MRI Protocol Prediction Using Natural Language Processing.

Exam protocoling is a significant non-interpretive task burden for radiologists. The purpose of this work was to develop a natural language … ding real-world performance accuracy of 97.9%. We conclude that NLP algorithms, including "smaller" large language models like the BERT family often overlooked today, can predict MRI imaging protocols for the abdomen and pelvis with high real-world performance, offering to decrease radiologists' non-interpretive task load and increasing departmental efficiency.

When AI becomes a language partner: a moderated serial mediation model of AIGC-supported communicative task engagement and learning enjoyment.

BACKGROUND: Language learning is a deeply social and affective process, and much of it now unfolds beyond the classroom, through AI generated content (AIGC) tools that learners take up for communicative practice in everyday digital life. This rapid, largely unguided shift raises a timely question for the social and affective domain of language learning: whether practicing with an AI provides relational and emotional experiences that sustain language use, such as a sense of a responsive partner and the enjoyment of meaningful exchange, and how this process varies with learners' tolerance of amb

Evaluating the Construct Validity of Sentence-Focused Diversity Measures With Late-Talking Toddlers and Same-Age Peers.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the construct validity of three sentence-focused diversity measures, intransitive verb diversity, transitive verb diversity, and third person (3P) subject diversity, using two methods: (a) group differentiation of late-talking (LT) toddlers from peers with typically developing (TD) language and (b) associations with established measures of language development. A secondary purpose was to determine whether 3P subject diversity was more strongly associated with intransitive verbs than transitive verbs. METHOD: Examiner-child language samples fr

The autocracy of meaning: Intact visuo-imitative processes may not compensate for meaningful gestures.

The dual-route models of action distinguish between a semantic and a non-semantic visuo-motor route to execute different types of gestures. Despite the large amount of evidence in support to the model, some aspects are debated. One issue concerns the recruitment of the visuo-motor route to correctly execute meaningful gestures when the semantic route is damaged. Debated predictions of the dual-route model were investigated in a sample of 32 patients with left hemisphere stroke lesions compared to 27 healthy controls. Group analysis showed that patients were equally impaired on meaningful and m

Scalable and Interpretable Chemical Neurotoxicity Prediction via Multi-Modal Gated Fusion and ChemBERTa.

Chemical exposure causes adverse neurological outcomes, highlighting the need for high-throughput screening of chemical neurotoxicity. However, existing computational methods rely on single-modality inputs and lack complementary molecular information to sufficiently enhance the accuracy and efficiency of neurotoxicity risk assessment. Here, we present NeuroToxPredictor, a scalable and interpretable multimodal framework built on a curated chemical neurotoxicity dataset for accurate and efficient chemical neurotoxicity prediction. It integrates graph attention networks and molecular fingerprints

Incremental Vision-Language Object Detection via Sparse Frequency Transform.

Vision-language object detectors (VLODs) pretrained on large image-text corpora exhibit strong zero-shot detection abilities, yet their performance often degrades on specialized downstream tasks that arrive sequentially. Hence, we study Incremental Vision-Language Object Detection (IVLOD), which requires continually adapting a VLOD across tasks with domain and/or class shifts while mitigating catastrophic forgetting of prior tasks and preserving its zero-shot generalization. To address this problem, we propose a novel method, named Sparse Frequency Transform (SFT), that minimizes inter-task in
