A 4-year-old Domestic short-haired cat was presented for severe anterior uveitis in the right eye associated with a Cuterebra spp. larva in the anterior chamber. This report describes successful surgical removal of the parasite with preservation of vision.

Unilateral chorioretinitis caused by ophthalmomyiasis interna posterior in a 5-month-old, female spayed Dachshund is reported. Larva removal by pars plana vitrectomy was performed after an unsuccessful photocoagulation of the organism. The prevalence of blowfly strike in rabbits in southwest England and Wales was investigated using a retrospective postal survey of small animal and mixed veterinary practices. Questionnaires were sent to 474 practices; 219 were returned completed, giving a response rate of 46.2%. The prevalence of blowfly strike was estimated as the percentage of veterinary practices that reporting having treated at least one rabbit for strike between May and September 2005. Oestrus ovis larva is by far the commonest cause of human ophthalmomyiasis. The larva usually limits it's activity to the conjunctiva and cornea, but, penetration of the eye is a potential complication. Misdiagnosis is common and the condition of acute catarrhal conjunctivitis is ascribed to other causes. The study included 20 patients referred to university hospital of Sirte, Libya. The use of fly-traps for the control of sheep blowfly strike was examined on 12 commercial sheep farms in south west England in 2003. Two flocks acted as controls, with no prophylactic blowfly strike control. Four flocks of lambs and three flocks of ewes were protected only by blowfly traps, seven of the flocks of ewes and six flocks of lambs were protected by blowfly traps but also had proprietary insecticides applied to them at some stage. There was no difference in the abundance of L. sericata at the various sites. The highest incidence of strike was seen in the two control flocks where 10.

We report a case of external human ophthalmomyiasis by OEstrus ovis was observed in a child living in southwestern France. The patient was contaminated on the playground of a school in a suburban village near Toulouse. Eleven first stage larvae were extracted from the eye. This case illustrates that contamination can occur in suburban areas of a large city remote from any cattle breeding zone.

Insects are known to be useful in estimating the postmortem interval (PMI). Here several cases are reported which show that a wide range of applications in medicolegal questions and hygiene together or apart from estimating the PMI can be answered by use of forensic entomology techniques, including close observation of larval development. We report two cases in which putrefied corpses were found in the state of massive myasis (colonisation of files); in one case, also beetles could be collected. Case 1:A human corpse was found four months postmortem exposed freely near a railway embankment (suicide, known heroin user). PURPOSE/METHODS: We used a simple laboratory method to identify the first instar stage of a Cuterebra larva that emerged from the conjunctiva of a 14-year-old boy with ipsilateral decreased vision, subretinal hemorrhages, and linear streaks in the fundus. The maggot was removed from the conjunctiva and cleared in glycerol solutions.
RESULTS/CONCLUSIONS: Light microscopy disclosed spines characteristic of Cuterebra larvae. Scanning electron microscopy is not necessary for diagnosis of Cuterebra ophthalmomyiasis even if samples are limited to the larval thorax.
