ERN varies with degree of psychopathy in an emotion discrimination task.

It is hypothesized that anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) function may be disrupted in psychopathy. Since ACC is considered the generator of the error-related negativity (ERN), we expected the ERN to be sensitive to the degree of psychopathy among violent offenders. EEG was collected while offenders and controls responded to a standard letter flanker task and to a face flanker task that required discrimination between angry and fearful expressions. Offenders were as accurate as controls on the letter flanker task but made more errors in emotion discrimination on the face flanker task. ERNs elici

Emotion perception in Asperger's syndrome and high-functioning autism: the importance of diagnostic criteria and cue intensity.

This study compared emotion perception accuracy between children with Asperger's syndrome (AS) and high-functioning autism (HFA). Thirty children were diagnosed with AS or HFA based on empirically supported diagnostic criteria and administered an emotion perception test consisting of facial expressions and tone of voice cues that varied in intensity. Participants with AS and the typically developing standardization sample of the emotion perception instrument had the same mean emotion perception accuracy, whereas participants with HFA performed significantly worse. Results also provided prelimi

Judgments of synchrony between auditory and moving or still visual stimuli.

The flash-lag effect is a visual illusion wherein intermittently flashed, stationary stimuli seem to trail after a moving visual stimulus despite being flashed synchronously. We tested hypotheses that the flash-lag effect is due to spatial extrapolation, shortened perceptual lags, or accelerated acquisition of moving stimuli, all of which call for an earlier awareness of moving visual stimuli over stationary ones. Participants judged synchrony of a click either to a stationary flash of light or to a series of adjacent flashes that seemingly bounced off or bumped into the edge of the visual dis

Retrieval monitoring and anosognosia in Alzheimer's disease.

This study explored the relationship between episodic memory and anosognosia (a lack of deficit awareness) among patients with mild Alzheimer's disease (AD). Participants studied words and pictures for subsequent memory tests. Healthy older adults made fewer false recognition errors when trying to remember pictures compared with words, suggesting that the perceptual distinctiveness of picture memories enhanced retrieval monitoring (the distinctiveness heuristic). In contrast, although participants with AD could discriminate between studied and nonstudied items, they had difficulty recollecting

Occipitotemporal activation evoked by the perception of human bodies is modulated by the presence or absence of the face.

We investigated the degree to which activation in regions of the brain known to participate in social perception is influenced by the presence or absence of the face and other body parts. Subjects continuously viewed a static image of a lecture hall in which actors appeared briefly in various poses. There were three conditions: Body-Face, in which the actor appeared with limbs, torso, and face clearly visible; Body-Only, in which the actor appeared with his or her face occluded by a book; and Face-Only, in which the actor appeared behind a podium with only face and shoulders visible. Decoding of emotion through facial expression, prosody and verbal content in children and adolescents with Asperger's syndrome.

This study examined differences in the ability to decode emotion through facial expression, prosody, and verbal content between 14 children with Asperger's Syndrome (AS) and 16 typically developing peers. The ability to decode emotion was measured by the Perception of Emotion Test (POET), which portrayed the emotions of happy, angry, sad, and neutral among the modalities of static and dynamic facial expression, prosody, verbal content, and all modalities combined. Results revealed that children with AS had more difficulty identifying emotions through static facial expression, dynamic facial ex

[The role of emotions in psychopathology].

OBJECTIVE: In the present study, functional fMRI was used to test the influence of induced emotions on a non-affective, attention-demanding, cognitive task. METHOD: Twelve healthy males viewed blocks of affective pictures. Between picture presentation a Simon-paradigm was presented. In an alternating way blocks with stimulus-response compatible and incompatible trials were presented. RESULTS: Emotion induction differentially influenced cortical activation patterns. In negative mood incompatible trials in contrast to compatible trials lead to significant decrease of activity in emotion relate

Verbal mediation of number knowledge: evidence from semantic dementia and corticobasal degeneration.

Patients with corticobasal degeneration (CBD) appear to have impaired number knowledge. We examined the nature of their number deficit while we tested the hypothesis that comprehension of larger numbers depends in part on verbal mediation. We evaluated magnitude judgments and performance on number conservation measures rooted in Piagetian theory in nonaphasic patients with CBD (n=13) and patients with a fluent form of progressive aphasia known as semantic dementia (SD; n=15). We manipulated the numbers of the arrays and the visual-spatial properties of the stimuli being compared during magnitu

Multiple levels of visual object constancy revealed by event-related fMRI of repetition priming.

We conducted two event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) experiments to investigate the neural substrates of visual object recognition in humans. We used a repetition-priming method with visual stimuli recurring at unpredictable intervals, either with the same appearance or with changes in size, viewpoint or exemplar. Lateral occipital and posterior inferior temporal cortex showed lower activity for repetitions of both real and non-sense objects; fusiform and left inferior frontal regions showed decreases for repetitions of only real objects. Repetition of different exemplar

Construct validity of the continuous attention test for children.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the construct validity of the Continuous Attention Test for Children (the CAT), a clinical measure of vigilance. To examine convergent and discriminant validity, a multitrait-multimethod matrix was used. It was predicted that the CAT would correlate with other neuropsychological measures involving vigilance, but not with measures involving potential confounds (e.g., short-term memory). Participants were 47 children, aged 6 to 11, referred for neuropsychological assessment. Results partially supported discriminant validity, but convergent validity was w

Expertise for cars and birds recruits brain areas involved in face recognition.

Expertise with unfamiliar objects ('greebles') recruits face-selective areas in the fusiform gyrus (FFA) and occipital lobe (OFA). Here we extend this finding to other homogeneous categories. Bird and car experts were tested with functional magnetic resonance imaging during tasks with faces, familiar objects, cars and birds. Homogeneous categories activated the FFA more than familiar objects. Moreover, the right FFA and OFA showed significant expertise effects. An independent behavioral test of expertise predicted relative activation in the right FFA for birds versus cars within each group. Th

Written lists as mediating stimuli in the matching-to-sample performances of individuals with mental retardation.

Students with mental retardation learned to write lists in order to perform a matching task that they could not do otherwise. After an initial assessment phase, reinforcement was arranged in the computerized tasks to follow selection of the six pictures that were identical to those in the six-picture samples presented. In Study 1, even though the participants wrote a list of the names of the six sample pictures on each trial, read a list, or did both, they often made errors when a brief delay preceded picture selection. In contrast, performance was nearly perfect when a list was written, read,

Processing of visual motion direction in the fronto-parallel plane in the stationary or moving observer.

To examine the effect of concurrent self-motion on the perception of the direction of object-motion, random-dot kinematograms were employed in which the strength of the directional signal was manipulated by varying the percentage of coherently moving pixels. The subject's task was to indicate the motion direction of briefly presented displays while undergoing whole body rotations with angular accelerations of 0, 5, 15, or 45 degrees/s2. The perception of the direction of visual motion in the horizontal plane was impaired only when visual and vestibular motion directions were incongruous. The i

Contrasting effects of letter-spacing in alexia: further evidence that different strategies generate word length effects in reading.

The reading behaviour of two alexic patients (SA and WH) is reported. Both patients are severely impaired at reading single words, and both show abnormally strong effects of word length when reading. These two symptoms are characteristic of letter-by-letter reading. Experiment 1 examined the pattern of errors when the patients read large and small words. Further experiments examined the effects of inter-letter spacing on word naming (Experiments 2a and 2b) and the identification of letters in letter strings (Experiment 3). For both patients, letter identification was better for widely spaced l

A comparison of static and dynamic presentation procedures on discrimination learning of individuals with severe or moderate mental retardation.

A dynamic presentation of stimulus materials may be more effective than a static presentation. To test this hypothesis, we taught 16 individuals with moderate or severe mental retardation to identify two comparative discriminations (more, longer) by each of two different procedures. In the static, or traditional, presentation procedure the stimuli were positioned before a trial began and not manipulated by the experimenter during the trial. In the dynamic presentation procedure the individual watched the experimenter manipulate the relevant dimension of the stimuli during a series of trials. B

Spatial discrimination in children with poor vergence control.

In a 1987 study of children with reading difficulties, Stein, Riddell, and Fowler observed a relationship between poor vergence control, as indicated on a synoptophore vergence test, and the children's problems with learning to read. They suggested that poor vergence control led to impaired accuracy of spatial localisation and that this impeded learning to read. Here we have compared the accuracy of spatial localisation on a nonlinguistic computer game by children having good and poor vergence control. The children with poor vergence control made significantly more errors when locating targets

Visual Temporal Acuity Is Related to Auditory Speech Perception Abilities in Cochlear Implant Users.

OBJECTIVES: Despite significant improvements in speech perception abilities following cochlear implantation, many prelingually deafened cochlear implant (CI) recipients continue to rely heavily on visual information to develop speech and language. Increased reliance on visual cues for understanding spoken language could lead to the development of unique audiovisual integration and visual-only processing abilities in these individuals. Brain imaging studies have demonstrated that good CI performers, as indexed by auditory-only speech perception abilities, have different patterns of visual corte
