Charcot's arthropathy secondary to herpetic encephalitis sequelae: an unusual presentation.

Neuropathic arthropathy (Charcot's arthropathy) is a progressive articular disease associated with a reduced sensorial and protector proprioceptive reflex. Its etiology includes many different conditions such as syringomyelia, traumatic lesion causing medullary deformity, spina bifida, diabetic neuropathy, leprosy neuropathy, neurofibromatosis, amyloid neuropathy, alcohol, and repetitive injection of hydrocortisone into joints, among others. However, the relationship between Charcot's arthropathy and herpetic encephalitis has not yet been described. Herpes encephalitis causes acute and chronic

The perceptions of students in the allied health professions towards stroke rehabilitation teams and the SLP's role.

UNLABELLED: The purpose of this study was to determine the perceptions and knowledge of final-year speech-language pathology (SLP), physical and occupational therapy (PT, OT) students toward stroke rehabilitation teams and the SLPs' roles on them. The investigators adapted a survey developed by (Felsher & Ross, 1994) and administered it to 35 PT, 35 OT, and 35 SLP final year students (n=105). We found that the students preferred the transdisciplinary team approach and agreed that the advantages of teamwork were the exchange of ideas, opportunities for participatory learning, and holistic treat

Psychophysiological correlates of the inter-individual variability of head movement control in seated humans.

We recently conducted experiments where 24 seated participants were subjected (with eyes closed) to small amplitude, high-jerk impulses of linear acceleration. Responses were distributed as a continuum between two extremes. The "stiff" participants showed little movement of the head relative to the trunk, whereas the "floppy" participants showed a large head rotation in the direction opposite the sled movement. We hypothesized that the stiff behavior resulted from the spontaneous use of an imagined visual frame of reference and undertook this larger-scale study to test that idea. The distribut

Visual vertigo: an observational case series of eleven patients.

BACKGROUND: Dizziness is a common symptom which is frequently due to either peripheral or central vestibular dysfunction. However, some patients may lack typical signs suggesting a vestibular or cerebellar lesion and they mostly complain of vertigo or posture imbalance induced by visual stimulation. The symptoms immediately improve either on cessation of the visual input or upon closure of the eyes. Such a presentation is typical of visual vertigo. PATIENTS AND METHODS: From 1993 to 2003, 242 patients were examined for either "vertigo" or "dizziness". The diagnosis of visual vertigo was based

Subtalar instability. Etiology, diagnosis, and management.

Subtalar instability is an evolving disorder that seems to cause a portion of chronic hindfoot instability. It can be seen as an isolated problem, or more commonly, in combination with ankle instability. There seems to be many injury mechanisms, most of which seem to involve supination of the hindfoot, and all seem to attenuate the lateral ligaments of the ankle and subtalar joints. As the condition progresses, and additional sprains occur as a result of the alteration in subtalar joint mechanics, the remaining ligaments become attenuated. There are many methods described to diagnose subtalar

Visuo-vestibular biofeedback in patients with peripheral vestibular disorders.

It is well known that diseases of the vestibular system can be compensated by increased spontaneous activity of other systems engaged in maintaining equilibrium, i.e. proprioceptive and visual systems. A complex approach using multisensory stimulation is the optimal way to achieve vestibular compensation. The aim of our study was to determine the effect of vestibular rehabilitation therapy as measured by posturography in a group of 72 patients suffering from vestibular disorders: Ménière's disease (n = 31), neuritis vestibularis (n = 21) and vertebrobasilar insufficiency (n = 20). Patients und

Encoding target-trunk relative position: cervical versus vestibular contribution.

The contribution of cervical and vestibular cues in signaling the changes in target-trunk relative positions during self-motion was investigated. Normal subjects (Ss) were shown a LED flashed in the peripheral visual field in a dark room. Ss were then passively rotated about the vertical axis in one of three different conditions: (1) head chair-fixed (vestibular condition); (2) head earth-fixed (relaxed neck condition); and (3) head earth-fixed, but with the Ss actively attempting to turn it (activated neck condition). The Ss were then required to indicate, with their unseen index finger, the

Toward an agreement on terminology of nuclear and subnuclear divisions of the motor thalamus.

The nomenclature most commonly applied to the motor-related nuclei of the human thalamus differs substantially from that applied to the thalamus of other primates, from which most knowledge of input-output connections is derived. Knowledge of these connections in the human is a prerequisite for stereotactic neurosurgical approaches designed to alleviate movement disorders by the placement of lesions in specific nuclei. Transfer to humans of connectional information derived from experimental studies in nonhuman primates requires agreement about the equivalence of nuclei in the different species

Most classes of dorsal root ganglion neurons are severely depleted but not absent in mice lacking neurotrophin-3.

During development, many neurons in the dorsal root ganglia require neurotrophin-3 for survival. However, it is not known precisely which subpopulations of sensory neurons, other than the proprioceptive afferents, are neurotrophin-3 dependent in vivo. In this study, using a battery of neurochemical markers that label different subpopulations of dorsal root ganglion neurons, we found a widespread, about 60-65% loss of cells in most subpopulations in neurotrophin-3 deficient mice. Intermediate losses were found in the heterozygous mutant mice consistent with a gene dosage effect. In agreement wi

Neurohistological findings after experimental anterior cruciate ligament allograft transplantation.

A multiplicity of surgical operations have been developed in an attempt to achieve satisfactory function after anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) repair. None of these procedures have been able to duplicate the fiber organization, anatomy of the attachment site, vascularity, or function of the ACL. Eighteen foxhounds received a deep-frozen bone-ACL-bone allograft and a ligament augmentation device. Neurohistological changes were evaluated 3, 6 and 12 months following implantation. The modified silver impregnation method and gold chloride technique were used to examine the presence of nerve endin

These findings suggested superior benefits of icing for restoring shoulder strength and proprioception, likely due to its ability to reduce inflammation and facilitate neuromuscular recovery. While percussive massage immediately improved sensorimotor performance, it appeared less effective for prolonged recovery than icing. Strength and conditioning …

Sensory reweighting for balance in people living with Parkinson's Disease: Postural adaptation, muscle co-contraction, and perceptual delays.

BACKGROUND: Postural instability is common in people with Parkinson's Disease (PwPD), increasing their risk of injurious falls. Evidence suggests a sensory reweighting deficit in PwPD, along with compensatory muscle co-contraction in response to postural challenges. During balance tasks requiring sensory reweighting, older adults exhibit elevated postural sway and muscle co-contraction, as well as longer perceptual delays, compared to young adults. Such responses may be exacerbated in PwPD, with implications for fall risk. RESEARCH QUESTION: The aim of this study was to assess postural sway,

Visual Disturbances to Avatar Foot Position Increase Step-Width Variability in Immersive VR Treadmill Walking.

Gait variability, the subtle fluctuations in walking patterns, is crucial for adaptation and motor learning. While existing methods to increase gait variability often rely on force-based perturbations, these can reduce motivation. This study explored if a subtle visual feedback distortion (VFD), applied to a first-person avatar's foot position in an immersive virtual reality environment, could increase gait variability without such a drawback. Twenty healthy adults walked on a treadmill wearing a head-mounted display and motion trackers, performing a stepping task under two conditions: with an

Chronic Ankle Instability Is Associated With Smaller Sensorimotor Deficits and Greater Integrity of the Superior Cerebellar Peduncles With Aging.

BACKGROUND: Chronic ankle instability is associated with balance deficits and maladaptive cerebellar neuroplasticity across age groups. However, it remains unclear how aging and chronic ankle instability interact to influence these abnormalities, particularly in cerebellar structures that are essential for proprioception and motor coordination. This gap in understanding limits the development of age-specific rehabilitation strategies. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: This study aimed to: (1) determine the interaction effect of chronic ankle instability and aging on sensorimotor deficits, (2) assess whethe…

Joint position sense testing at the wrist and its correlations with kinesiophobia and pain intensity in individuals who have sustained a distal radius fracture: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Sensorimotor impairment following distal radius fracture (DRF) has been associated with a significant decline in function. Joint position sense (JPS) testing is a meaningful and responsive way to assess sensorimotor impairment for individuals who have sustained a DRF; however, there are factors that may influence the results of JPS testing, including kinesiophobia and pain intensity. PURPOSE: This study aimed to evaluate the influence kinesiophobia may have on wrist JPS testing and if pain intensity impacts kinesiophobia and JPS in individuals with a DRF. STUDY DESIGN: This was a

Relative independence of upper limb position sense and reaching in children with hemiparetic perinatal stroke.

BACKGROUND: Studies using clinical measures have suggested that proprioceptive dysfunction is related to motor impairment of the upper extremity following adult stroke. We used robotic technology and clinical measures to assess the relationship between position sense and reaching with the hemiparetic upper limb in children with perinatal stroke. METHODS: Prospective term-born children with magnetic resonance imaging-confirmed perinatal ischemic stroke and upper extremity deficits were recruited from a population-based cohort. Neurotypical controls were recruited from the community. Participan

Position of compression garment around the knee affects healthy adults' knee joint position sense acuity.

Athletes use compression garments (CGs) to improve sport performance, accelerate rehabilitation from knee injuries or to enhance joint position sense (JPS). The position of CGs around the knee may affect knee JPS but the data is inconsistent. The purpose of the present study was to determine the effects of CG position on healthy adults' knee joint position sense acuity. In a counterbalanced, single-blinded study, 16 healthy young adults (8 female, age: 25.5 y) performed an active knee joint position-matching task with and without (CON) a below-knee (BK), above-knee (AK), or whole-knee (WK) CG

Physical characteristics associated with neck pain and injury in rugby union players.

BACKGROUND: Neck pain and injury are common in rugby union. Physical characteristics predisposing players to neck injury are largely unknown. This study aimed to determine physical characteristics associated with neck pain and injury in rugby union players. METHODS: Semi-professional rugby union players (N.=142) underwent pre-season measurements including cervical active range of motion (AROM), strength, sensorimotor proprioception (joint position error), and anthropometry. A structured interview established previous neck injury history, current symptoms, playing position, competition level, …
