A Cross-sectional Survey of Public Knowledge and Perspective on Coronavirus Disease, Vaccination, and Related Research in India during the COVID-19 Pandemic.

BACKGROUND AND RATIONALE: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has left no person unexposed to the wisdom about the need for human preparedness to tackle future pandemics irrespective of individual caste, race, religion, and education status. The extent of this change in knowledge and public perspective is difficult to measure in a populous nation like India subjected to individual freedom and cultural beliefs. Hence, we planned this study with the objective of evaluating the knowledge and perception of the Indian public towards COVID-19 disease, vaccination and research activities

Molecular detection and antibiotic resistance of diarrheagenic Escherichia coli from street food and water in mukuru slums, Nairobi County.

Globally, diarrheal diseases account for 550 million cases of foodborne illnesses annually. In Kenya, Escherichia coli (E. coli) infections from contaminated food and water pose a serious health concern, especially in settings with poor sanitation and hygiene practices This study examined the genetic characteristics and antimicrobial resistance profiles of diarrheagenic E. coli (DEC) recovered from street foods and water from Mukuru informal settlements, Nairobi. Between September and December 2023, 384 (each 77) samples of street foods (Mandazi, githeri, French fries), wastewater, and drinkin

U.S. policy on wireless technologies and public health protection: regulatory gaps and proposed reforms.

The current U.S. regulatory framework governing non-ionizing radiofrequency radiation (RFR) used in all wireless technology is outdated and lacks adequate protection, oversight, and enforcement. The U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) was given regulatory jurisdiction by the U.S. Congress in 1996 over RFR exposure standards setting even though FCC has no in-house expertise regarding health or environmental effects from RFR. FCC is a licensing/engineering entity that relies on other government agencies for guidance on ambient exposures and devices. However, all relevant civilian public

Small bowel obstruction due to ascariasis in a child from southern Ethiopia: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Ascariasis, caused by the parasitic nematode Ascaris lumbricoides, is estimated to affect just under 900 million people globally, the majority of whom are children. Infections are most common in impoverished regions with poor water, sanitation, and hygiene, as transmission is reliant upon the ingestion of eggs excreted in feces found in contaminated soil. CASE PRESENTATION: An 8-year-old Black African boy from the Sidama region, southern Ethiopia, presented at Adare General Hospital with a 3-day history of vomiting, abdominal pain, distension, and inability to pass stool or gas. Qualitative exploration of determinants of active mobility and social participation in Urban neighborhoods: individual perceptions over objective factors?

BACKGROUND: Urban neighborhood environments play an important role in facilitating or hindering residents to engage in active mobility and social participation. However, while there is much quantitative research, in-depth knowledge that contextualizes residents' subjective perceptions of barriers and facilitators of active mobility and social participation is still insufficient. Therefore, a qualitative approach was used to collect subjectively perceived barriers and facilitators of active mobility and social participation of residents from different neighborhoods with objectively determined h

Fidelity of kangaroo mother care services in the public health facilities in Bangladesh: a cross-sectional mixed-method study.

BACKGROUND: Kangaroo mother care (KMC) is a proven low-cost intervention to prevent neonatal mortality of pre-term and low birth weight babies and is very relevant to Bangladesh. KMC provides thermal regulation and thus directly avert neonatal mortality. KMC includes early, continuous, and prolonged skin-to-skin contact between an infant and caregiver, exclusive breastfeeding, early discharge from the hospital, and post-discharge follow-up. The purpose of this study was to investigate the fidelity of this intervention's implementation according to national guidelines across all tiers of govern

The East African Community (EAC) mobile laboratory networks in Kenya, Burundi, Tanzania, Rwanda, Uganda, and South Sudan-from project implementation to outbreak response against Dengue, Ebola, COVID-19, and epidemic-prone diseases.

BACKGROUND: East Africa is home to 170 million people and prone to frequent outbreaks of viral haemorrhagic fevers and various bacterial diseases. A major challenge is that epidemics mostly happen in remote areas, where infrastructure for Biosecurity Level (BSL) 3/4 laboratory capacity is not available. As samples have to be transported from the outbreak area to the National Public Health Laboratories (NPHL) in the capitals or even flown to international reference centres, diagnosis is significantly delayed and epidemics emerge. MAIN TEXT: The East African Community (EAC), an intergovernmenta

Best practices to prevent transmission and control outbreaks of hand, foot, and mouth disease in childcare facilities: a systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Hand, foot, and mouth disease continues to cause seasonal epidemics in the Asia-Pacific Region. Since the current Enterovirus 71 vaccines do not provide cross-protection for all Enterovirus species that cause hand, foot, and mouth disease, there is an urgent need to identify appropriate detection tools and best practice to prevent its transmission and to effectively control its outbreaks. This systematic review aimed to identify characteristics of outbreak and assess the impact and effectiveness of detection tools and public health preventive measures to interrupt transmission. T

Study and implementation of urogenital schistosomiasis elimination in Zanzibar (Unguja and Pemba islands) using an integrated multidisciplinary approach.

BACKGROUND: Schistosomiasis is a parasitic infection that continues to be a major public health problem in many developing countries being responsible for an estimated burden of at least 1.4 million disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) in Africa alone. Importantly, morbidity due to schistosomiasis has been greatly reduced in some parts of the world, including Zanzibar. The Zanzibar government is now committed to eliminate urogenital schistosomiasis. Over the next 3-5 years, the whole at-risk population will be administered praziquantel (40 mg/kg) biannually. Additionally, snail control and b

User Requirements for Comanaged Digital Health and Care: Review.

BACKGROUND: The sustainability of health and social care has led to an imperative to shift the balance of care to communities and support person-centered, integrated, preventive, comanaged, and sustainable care. The digital tool set can support this shift; however, it must extend beyond a clinical focus to include broader personal, social, and environmental needs, experiences, and outcomes. The existing digital health and care design and user requirements literature focuses mainly on specific digital products or design methods. There is little whole-system or whole-of-life consideration, which

Conducting a large-scale randomised controlled trial in children's social care: reflections on challenges, successes and lessons learned from the Reflective Fostering Study.

BACKGROUND: Research in Children's Social Care in the United Kingdom operates in a framework that was initially designed to support medical research within healthcare settings. Although adaptations to this framework have been made for social care settings, our experience suggested that significant systemic and organisational challenges to conducting large-scale randomised controlled trials in fostering services in the United Kingdom still remain, which work against the likelihood of such studies being completed successfully. A further challenge we faced was that that many fostering services we

Determinants of Physical Activity Engagement Among Male Adolescents in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia: A Comparative Study of Athletes and Non-Athletes.

Background: Physical inactivity among Saudi Arabian adolescents is a critical public health concern due to its contribution to the rising prevalence of overweight, obesity, and non-communicable diseases. Despite this, the motivational profiles and perceived barriers that differentiate athletic from non-athletic adolescents remain understudied in the Saudi literature, particularly within the school Physical Education (PE) context. Grounded in Self-Determination Theory (SDT), the present study examined the factors preventing and motivating Saudi adolescents to engage in physical activity (PA) an

Spatial disparities and determinants of obstetric fistula among childbearing women in sub-Saharan Africa: A geospatial regression approach.

OBJECTIVE: Obstetric fistula is a leading cause of maternal mortality and morbidity and continues to pose a significant public health challenge in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). Despite its serious and devastating effects, there are a few studies that describe the spatial distribution, pooled prevalence, and factors associated with obstetric fistula in SSA. Understanding the burden and geographic variation is important for targeted interventions, efficient resource allocation, and progress toward Sustainable Development Goal 3. The aim of the present study was to assess geospatial variations, poole

Redesigning Value-Based Payment Models to Support Substance Use Treatment Systems.

Although value-based payment models are increasingly prevalent across physical health systems, there is limited experience and understanding of how they apply to substance use disorder (SUD) and other behavioral health systems. As SUD systems have largely been excluded from value-based designs, existing metrics that determine value for SUD are skewed toward medical and hospital system outcomes, such as emergency department visits and hospital readmissions. As a result, these metrics overlook the foundational financial, operational, and clinical functions that SUD agencies need to thrive in tod

The views and experiences of nurses and midwives in the provision and management of provider-initiated HIV testing and counseling: a systematic review of qualitative evidence.

BACKGROUND: Global progress towards HIV prevention and care is contingent upon increasing the number of those aware of their status through HIV testing. Provider-initiated HIV testing and counseling is recommended globally as a strategy to enhance uptake of HIV testing and is primarily conducted by nurses and midwives. Research shows that provider-initiated HIV testing and counseling implementation is sub-optimal. The reasons for this are unclear. OBJECTIVES: The review aimed to explore nurses' and midwives' views and experiences of the provision and management of provider-initiated HIV testi

Seven decades towards malaria elimination in Yunnan, China.

BACKGROUND: Yunnan Province was considered the most difficult place in China for malaria elimination because of its complex malaria epidemiology, heterogeneous ecological features, relatively modest economic development, and long, porous border with three malaria endemic countries: Lao People's Democratic Republic, Myanmar, and Viet Nam. METHODS: Academic publications and grey literature relevant to malaria elimination in Yunnan covering the period from 1950 until 2020 inclusive were considered. The following academic indexes were searched: China Science Periodical Database, China National Kn
