UNLABELLED: A QCT-based nonlinear FEM was used to assess vertebral strength and mechanical parameters in postmenopausal women. It had higher discriminatory power for vertebral fracture than aBMD and vBMD. Alendronate effects were detected at 3 months, and marked bone density increases were noted in juxta-cortical areas compared to inner trabecular areas.
INTRODUCTION: QCT-based finite element method (QCT/FEM) can predict vertebral compressive strength ex vivo. This study aimed to assess vertebral fracture risk and alendronate effects on osteoporosis in vivo using QCT/FEM.
METHODS: Vertebral

Since the recognition of normal-pressure hydrocephalus as an entity (1965), ventriculo-atrial or peritoneal shunting has been proposed as a treatment for this disease. Unfortunately, selection of patients who would benefit from shunting has always been difficult, and no clinical or brain imaging criteria have been entirely satisfactory. Functional studies intended to measure the local cerebral blood flow (lCBF) seem more promising. Xenon CT CBF measurement has been chosen because of its ability to measure deep white matter lCBF with good spatial resolution. This preliminary study reports the r

OBJECTIVES: This study sought to compare a new quantitative angiographic technique to cardiac magnetic resonance-derived regurgitation fraction (CMR-RF) for the quantification of prosthetic valve regurgitation (PVR) after transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR).
BACKGROUND: PVR after TAVR is challenging to quantify, especially during the procedure.
METHODS: Post-replacement aortograms in 135 TAVR recipients were analyzed offline by videodensitometry to measure the ratio of the time-resolved contrast density in the left ventricular outflow tract to that in the aortic root (videodensitom

OBJECTIVE: To describe the clinical and procedural outcomes of patients treated with the valve-in-valve technique for severe aortic insufficiency (AI) after balloon-expandable transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR).
BACKGROUND: Severe AI immediately after valve implantation is a notable complication of TAVR. It can be treated with a valve-in-valve technique which involves deploying a second valve within the first one to crush the leaflets of the first implant leaving a new functional valve.
METHODS: We analyzed data on 142 consecutive patients at our institution undergoing TAVR with t

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Coronary angiography-derived wall shear stress (WSS) may enable identification of vulnerable plaques and patients. A new recently introduced software allows seamless three-dimensional quantitative coronary angiography (3D-QCA) reconstruction and WSS computation within a single user-friendly platform carrying promise for clinical applications. This study examines for the first time the efficacy of this software in detecting vulnerable lesions in patients with intermediate non-flow limiting stenoses.
METHODS: This multicentre retrospective study included patients who had co

BACKGROUND: Transoesophageal echocardiography (TOE) has become indispensable in the catheterization laboratory in the guidance of some percutaneous interventions, as a complementary imaging technique to fluoroscopy. However, the two imaging modalities are presented separately and differently, making interpretation of the anatomical spatial relationships complicated. EchoNavigator® (Philips Healthcare, Best, the Netherlands) is an innovative software package, enabling fusion of fluoroscopic and echocardiographic images on the same screen.
AIMS: To assess the feasibility of EchoNavigator® in th

BACKGROUND: Bi-plane angiography is the gold standard for imaging the pulmonary arteries (PAs) after cavo-pulmonary connection (CPC). Three-dimensional rotational angiography (3DRA) is emerging technology that we hypothesized may enhance diagnostic capabilities in this patient group.
METHODS: Retrospective review of patients who underwent 3DRA to assess the PAs after CPC. 3DRA images were examined for diagnostic quality and compared, both qualitatively and quantitatively with corresponding 2D images.
RESULTS: Between 1/2010 and 12/2010, 37 3DRAs were obtained in 32 pts with prior CPC. Median

Vasodilator-stress CT perfusion imaging in addition to CT coronary angiography (CTCA) may provide a single-test alternative to nuclear stress testing, commonly used to assess hemodynamic significance of stenosis. Another alternative is fractional flow reserve (FFR) calculated from cardiac CT images. We studied the concordance between these two approaches and their relationship to outcomes. We prospectively studied 150 patients with chest pain, who underwent CTCA and regadenoson CT. CTCA images were interpreted for presence and severity of stenosis. Fused 3D displays of subendocardial X-ray att

BACKGROUND: Transcatheter aortic valve (TAV) failure may require redo transcatheter aortic valve replacement (redo-TAVR). The multiple layers of metal after redo-TAVR may jeopardize coronary artery patency and accessibility and result in prosthesis-patient mismatch. Dedicated software may use multi-slice computed tomography (MSCT) imaging to simulate TAV deployment relative to the prior TAV and the individual's anatomy and predict coronary accessibility and TAV expansion.
AIM: We aimed to validate redo-TAVR simulations created in FEops HEARTguide.

Proper inlet boundary conditions are essential for accurate computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling. We developed methodology to derive noninvasive FFRB using CFD and computed tomography coronary angiography (CTCA) images. This study aims to assess the influence of brachial mean blood pressure (MBP) and total coronary inflow on FFRB computation. Twenty-two patients underwent both CTCA and FFR measurements. Total coronary flow was computed from left ventricular mass (LVM) measured from CTCA. A total of 286 CFD simulations were run by varying MBP and LVM at 70, 80, 90, 100, 110, 120, and 130

OBJECTIVE: Long-term data regarding the safety and durability of thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR) are limited. The study objective was to evaluate the long-term outcomes of TEVAR in high-risk patients with descending thoracic aortic pathology.
METHODS: High-risk patients were treated with thoracic endografts (2001-2011) under a prospective, physician-sponsored, investigational device exemption trial. Three-dimensional reconstructions and measurements were performed on computed tomography scans acquired before discharge, at 1, 6, and 12 months, and then yearly thereafter.

Chest CT is emerging as a valuable diagnostic tool for clinical management of COVID-19 associated lung disease. Artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to aid in rapid evaluation of CT scans for differentiation of COVID-19 findings from other clinical entities. Here we show that a series of deep learning algorithms, trained in a diverse multinational cohort of 1280 patients to localize parietal pleura/lung parenchyma followed by classification of COVID-19 pneumonia, can achieve up to 90.8% accuracy, with 84% sensitivity and 93% specificity, as evaluated in an independent test set (not i

BackgroundPeripheral artery disease (PAD) outcomes often rely on the expertise of individual vascular units, introducing potential subjectivity into disease staging. This retrospective, multicenter cohort study aimed to demonstrate the ability of artificial intelligence (AI) to provide disease staging based on inter-institutional expertise by predicting limb outcomes in post-interventional pedal angiograms of PAD patients, specifically in comparison to the inframalleolar modifier in the Global Limb Anatomic Staging System (IM GLASS).MethodsWe used computer vision (CV) based on the MobileNetV2
