BACKGROUND: The burden imposed by workplace rotator cuff (RC) injuries has been reasonably defined. However, literature associated with the demographic characteristics and 'best practices' to manage such injuries among workers' compensation (WC) patients is scant.
AIMS: To consolidate the existing literature on full-thickness RC tears among WC patients. Subject, shoulder and injury characteristics were examined to determine if and how WC recipients may differ from their non-compensable counterparts.
METHODS: A systematic search (databases, clinical practice guideline web resources, conferenc

An 80-year-old woman with repeated hemarthrosis of the right shoulder was examined and treated arthroscopically. Plain radiographs indicated narrowing of the acromiohumeral interval (3 mm) with large acromial spur. Under fluoroscopic visualization, the impingement between the humeral head and the medial edge of the acromion was seen at 50 degrees abduction. The area of impingement of the humeral head seemed to be just medial to the greater tuberosity. Arthroscopically, a crater formation was seen at this site. Active bleeding was seen at the center of the crater, which was interpreted as the p

PURPOSE: To determine the correlation of the extent of lesions of the supraspinatus tendon in MRI's of the shoulder with surgical or arthroscopic findings using the classification of Snyders and Batemann, respectively.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The preoperative MRI's of 80 patients (age: 16 - 76/47.4 +/- 14.0 years) which were performed due to various complaints of the shoulder were analyzed retrospectively by two experienced and blinded radiologists. We evaluated the incidence and the extent of partial or complete ruptures of the supraspinatus tendon. After MRI, an arthroscopic or open surgical

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of the morphometric association between the glenoid fossa and the humeral head on rotator cuff pathology.
METHODS: Shoulder MRI examinations performed for any cause in study centers between August 2008 and August 2009 were retrospectively evaluated. Shoulder MRI exams having rotator cuff pathology, such as trauma, degeneration, and acromion Type 2, 3 and 4 were excluded. The study included 62 shoulder exams with rotator cuff pathology having Type 1 acromion morphology and 60 shoulder exams without rotator cuff pathology (control g

BACKGROUND: Important differences in clinical outcomes likely exist between patients with healed and nonhealed rotator cuff repairs. The survival probability of rotator cuff repairs has not been published in a time-dependent manner up to now.
HYPOTHESES: Recurrent tears occur more frequently in the early postoperative period. Early failures of the repair are a prognostic factor for the long-term outcome.
STUDY DESIGN: Cohort study; Level of evidence, 3.
METHODS: A series of 107 consecutive patients undergoing arthroscopically assisted mini-open repair of the rotator cuff between 1998 and 20

BACKGROUND: Anterosuperior rotator cuff tears involving the subscapularis and supraspinatus tendons are less common than other tears of the rotator cuff. The purpose of this study was to report the clinical outcome, rotator cuff strength and structural integrity of open repair of combined anterosuperior rotator cuff tears.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Forty-eight patients at an average age of 58 years underwent open repair of a combined supraspinatus and subscapularis tendon tear. The follow-up evaluation included clinical scores, rotator cuff strength testing with a custom-made force measurement pl

All-arthroscopic rotator cuff repair has evolved into a viable surgical option, with outcome results equal to that of mini-open and open rotator cuff repair, with less perioperative morbidity and is driven by patient demand. The technique has required refinement of arthroscopic surgical techniques, and further advances from industry to provide alternative tools and techniques to make the procedure technically easier. This manuscript discusses all aspects of arthroscopic rotator cuff repair, and covers the evolution of the technique and provides a step-by-step technique to be used to accomplish

Deltoid detachment is one of the complications in open rotator cuff repair. Although it is often described, the actual prevalence, time at which it occurs and the predisposing causes are still unknown. We prospectively studied 112 patients with massive rotator cuff tears with a mean age of 67. The surgical approach was performed with a lateral para-acromial incision. Clinical assessment was performed with Constant's method. Of the 112 patients, 9 (8%) had deltoid detachment. It occurred about 3 months after surgery. Of the nine patients, two underwent revision surgery for the deltoid trans-bon

Tremendous advancement has been made in the surgical treatment of the shoulder within the last years. Arthroscopic techniques for treatment of rotator cuff lesions, instability problems and biceps tendon lesions are today established because of significant improvement of instruments, suture materials and anchor techniques. The 4th generation of shoulder prosthesis systems guarantee today anatomical and biomechanical advantages with significant functional improvement for the patient.

Arthroscopic subacromial decompression and rotator cuff debridement was performed on 61 consecutive patients with either stage II or stage III impingement syndrome: 27 with no actual tear of the cuff (group IIa); 21 with a partial-thickness tear (group IIb); and 13 with full-thickness tears (group III). Patients were seen in follow-up at a minimum of 2 years (mean 27.7 months). Apical oblique and outlet radiographic views of the shoulder were used to evaluate both preoperative subacromial pathology and to document removal of adequate bone postoperatively. Patients were evaluated pre- and posto

BACKGROUND: The etiology of shoulder and elbow contractures following neonatal brachial plexus injury is incompletely understood. With use of a mouse model, the current study tests the novel hypothesis that reduced growth of denervated muscle contributes to contractures following neonatal brachial plexus injury.
METHODS: Unilateral brachial plexus injuries were created in neonatal mice by supraclavicular C5-C6 nerve root excision. Shoulder and elbow range of motion was measured four weeks after injury. Fibrosis, cross-sectional area, and functional length of the biceps, brachialis, and subsca

Pioneered by Mihata and then popularized in the United States by Burkhart and colleagues, superior capsule reconstruction quickly became an essential treatment for massive irreparable rotator cuff tears. More recently, enthusiasm seems to have faded as the surgery is highly resource-intensive, technically demanding, and clinical outcomes have been inconsistent, with some studies finding significant structural failure rates. The history of orthopaedic surgery is rife with examples of implants, concepts, and procedures abandoned because of suboptimal results and/or unacceptable complication rate

Arthroscopic-assisted lower trapezius tendon transfer has emerged as a compelling joint-preserving solution for massive irreparable posterosuperior rotator cuff tears, yet the field has lacked a robust framework for interpreting what constitutes a meaningful patient outcome after this procedure. Establishing procedure-specific minimal clinically important difference and patient acceptable symptom state thresholds in this setting is both timely and necessary. When such thresholds are derived, however, they must be understood as cohort-specific constructs that cannot be universally applied acros

PURPOSE: We aimed to investigate the heterogeneity of synovial fibroblasts and their potential to undergo cell state transitions at the resolution of single cells.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We employed the single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) approach to comprehensively map the cellular landscape of the shoulder synovium in individuals with chronic rotator cuff tears (RCTs) and acute proximal humerus fractures (PHFs). Utilizing unbiased clustering analysis, we successfully identified distinct subpopulations of fibroblasts within the synovial environment. We utilized Monocle 3 to delineate the

Shoulder injury related to vaccine administration (SIRVA) is a prolonged episode of shoulder dysfunction that commences within 24 to 48 hours of a vaccination. Symptoms include a combination of shoulder pain, stiffness, and weakness. There has been a recent rapid increase in reported cases of SIRVA within the literature, particularly in adults, and is likely related to the mass vaccination programmes associated with COVID-19 and influenza. The pathophysiology is not certain, but placement of the vaccination in the subdeltoid bursa or other pericapsular tissue has been suggested to result in an

The rotator cuff (RC) is frequently torn at the enthesis composed of fibrocartilage. We aimed to histopathologically evaluate lining layers and assess the distribution of a disintegrin and metalloproteinase with thrombospondin motifs (ADAMTS)4, ADAMTS5, and microRNA (miR)-140s in the synovia of patients with RC tears. We recruited 51 patients who underwent arthroscopic surgical treatment for full-thickness rotator cuff tears, including 26 patients with < 3 cm tear size (group N) and 25 patients with ≥ 3 cm tear size (group W). Biopsied synovia were analyzed using histological and immunohistolo

Recovery of therapeutic or functional ambulatory capacity in patients with rotator cuff injury is a primary goal of rehabilitation. Wearable powered exoskeletons allow patients to perform repetitive practice with large movements to maximize recovery, even immediately after the acute event. The aim of this paper is to describe the usability, acceptability and acceptance of a hybrid exoskeleton for upper-limb passive rehabilitation using the System Usability Scale (SUS) questionnaire. This equipment, called ExoFlex, is defined as a hybrid exoskeleton since it is made up of rigid and soft compone
