Children comprised 52% of patients with Sickle Cell Disease (SCD). Types of Sickle Cell Disease encountered were SS (92.7%). SB thalassaemia (6.7%) and SD disease (0.7%). The disease was widespread in almost all castes and communities in the society; largest number of patients (20%) belonging to scheduled castes and only 1.4% were from scheduled tribes. Maximum number of cases were in the age group 2-4 and 4-6 years, many of whom died around this age. Besides attacks of pain, jaundice and anemia, frequent attacks of fever with anemia or only anemia in childhood were a predominant presenting fe

It has been well known for many years that Black Americans are at increased risk for sickle cell disease and that individuals of Mediterranean ancestry are at increased risk for thalassemias. Beyond this, however, complete assessments of the epidemiology of hemoglobinopathies in Americans have been constrained by lack of large enough sample size, incomplete diagnostic work or testing inadequacies, or missing or misleading ethnicity data. California began universal, mandatory screening of all infants born in the state in 1990, and by January 1996, had screened over 3.3 million infants of variou

Since priapism often leads to impotence immediate therapy should be given with few exceptions (patients with sickle cell disease, neoplasm and infections). A careful history and a search for the etiology are important. The physician should protect himself against legal retribution by obtaining the patient's signature on an informed and witnessed consent to treat.

Renal medullary carcinoma is a rare undifferentiated tumor of the kidney associated with sickle cell trait and characterized by INI1 (SMARCB1) loss. Although metastasis to lungs, lymph nodes, and bone is commonly reported, distant spread to the central nervous system almost never occurs. Here we present an unusual case of a patient with renal medullary carcinoma with metastasis to the brain following treatment which included tazemetostat, an EZH2 inhibitor. The metastatic brain lesion harbored morphologic, immunohistochemical, and methylation profile supportive of a primary CNS phenotype with …

CASE PRESENTATION: A 71-year-old female with h/o sickle cell trait, hypertension, obesity, metastatic renal cell cancer status post nephrectomy, bone metastasis, chronic kidney disease was admitted for elective embolization of the humerus bone metastasis. Given the high probability of contrast-induced nephropathy, …

INTRODUCTION: Angiogenesis has been investigated in different kinds of anemia. However, its role as a marker of angiogenesis has not been investigated in thalassemia or sickle cell disease (SCD).
OBJECTIVES: We aimed to investigate serum angiogenin level in children and adolescents with beta thalassemia or SCD and its relation to possible risk factors of angiogenesis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study included; 32 β-thalassemia major (β-TM) patients aged 14.2 ± 3.8 years, 20 β-thalassemia intermedia (β-TI) patients aged 14.3 ± 4.8 years, 20 SCD patients aged 14.1 ± 2.4 years; 8 with (HbSS) a

Molecular and cell biology have a great deal to offer tropical medicine in the future. As well as helping to understand the population genetics and dynamics of both infectious and non-infectious diseases, they promise to provide a new generation of diagnostic and therapeutic agents, and to play a major role in the development of new vaccines and other approaches to the control of disease in tropical communities.

AIMS: (1) To estimate the proportion of subjects with homozygous sickle cell disease who have a benign clinical course, and (2) to assess factors that may be predictive of benign disease.
MATERIAL: Subjects (n = 280) were participants in a longitudinal cohort study of sickle cell disease. They were classified as benign or control based on clinical history from birth to age 13 years old. Associations with growth, hematology, and an index of social status were investigated.
RESULTS: Benign disease occurred in 43 (15%) patients. Neither growth nor social status were related to benign disease. T

Bimonthly surveys were carried out for 12 months to investigate the dynamics of the acquisition of malaria parasitemia in relation to hemoglobin genotype, development of anemia, and body weight in infants during their first year of life. Thick blood smears for malaria, a capillary blood sample for measurement of packed cell volume (PCV) levels, and body weights were obtained at each survey. Generally, parasite rates (P < 0.001) and mean parasite densities (P < 0.025) increased with age. With a few exceptions, parasite rates and densities were similar in infants with hemoglobin AA and AS during

Normal circulating red blood cells (RBCs) and platelets have been shown to have small amounts of IgG on their membranes. The cell-bound IgG may be cytophilic (IgG nonspecifically adsorbed from the plasma) and/or IgG autoantibody. It has been suggested that most of the RBC-bound IgG is on older RBCs and is an autoantibody directed against senescent cell antigen (SCA). The accumulation of this RBC-bound IgG leads to Fc-dependent removal of senescent RBCs by macrophages in the reticuloendothelial system. RBCs also have complement components on their membrane; it is not clear how this accumulates

To study the potential of multivariate classification methods in order to obtain more insight into abnormal laboratory data from patients with sickle cell disease, we investigated standard haematological and clinical chemical variables of 18 controls and 37 apparently healthy persons with heterozygous sickle cell disease (Hb AS), all women, using both univariate and multivariate classification methods. In the univariate method, those with Hb AS showed decreased serum log aspartate aminotransferase (log AST) activity, mean corpuscular volume and mean corpuscular haemoglobin (MCH) and increased

White blood cell counts (WBC) were measured in 7,739 healthy black individuals, ages one through 84 years, to determine normal values for different age and sex groups. The mean WBC was highest in children one to two years of age, regardless of sex. The mean count decreased progressively in both males and females during preschool years, reaching a nadir in females six to 10 years of age and in males 11 to 15 years of age. Females in the age groups 11 to 15, 16 to 20, 21 to 30, and 31 to 40 years had consistently higher mean WBC than males in the same groups (p less than 0.001, p less than 0.001

The intracellular distribution of radioactivity was studied in normal and sickle erythrocytes labeled with sodium 51Cr chromate. Both types of cells had a higher fraction of 51Cr bound to hemoglobin when labeled in the presence of ACD at a pH of 7.09 than when labeled in the presence of CPD at a pH of 5.96. Citrate at a pH of 5.96 or less entered the red blood cells and decreased the 51Cr binding hemoglobin. Binding of 51Cr to hemoglobin within the red cells was also reduced when the ATP and DPG levels in the red blood cells were elevated. Studies with hemoglobin solution showed that 51Cr bind

The ease with which haemoglobin releases oxygen to the tissues is controlled by erythrocytic 2,3-diphosphoglycerate (2,3-DPG) such that an increase in the concentration of 2,3-DPG decreases oxygen affinity and vice versa. This review article describes the synthesis and breakdown of 2,3-DPG in the Embden-Meyerof pathway in red cells and briefly explains the molecular basis for its effect on oxygen affinity. Interaction of the effects of pH, Pco2, temperature and 2,3-DPG on the oxyhaemoglobin dissociation curve are discussed. The role of 2,3-DPG in the intraerythrocytic adaptation to various typ

Nine patients had white-without-pressure retinal lesions. These lesions were seen in areas of vitreoretinal adhesions. The configuration and location of these lesions changed over variable periods of time. The cause of this pecular migration is unknown, but may be related to separation and re-creation of vitreoretinal adhesions. The migratory nature of white-without-pressure areas has not, to our knowledge, previously been reported in the literature.
