Does Cannabis Smoke Cause Interstitial Lung Disease?

Background/Objectives: The correlation between drugs and interstitial lung disease (ILD) is reported, but the presence of the substances of abuse in the lung as a cause of disease has never been proved. In this observational study, our aim was to evaluate a possible correlation between ILD radiological findings and cannabinoids presence in broncho-alveolar lavage (BAL) or in resected lung tissue in patients with a history of cannabis smoke. Methods: Data of patients with ILD chest CT scan findings and history of drug use, submitted to BAL (Group 1), or to lung apex removal for pneumothorax (Gr

Case report: Fatal long-term intoxication by 2,4-dinitrophenol and anabolic steroids in a young bodybuilder with muscle dysmorphia.

A case of chronic intoxication by 2,4-dinitrophenol (2,4-DNP) is reported in a 21-year-old bodybuilder, also known as an abuser of anabolic steroids, who died after ingesting 2 grams of this substance after 6 months of repeated consumption. The bodybuilder presented the triad of symptoms - tachycardia, tachypnoea, profuse sweating - from 6 months before his death, and was hospitalised for multiple organ failure 4 months before his death. Medical staff attributed this serious episode to his consumption of 2,4-DNP. Although the triad of symptoms persisted, he denied continuing to consume 2,4-DNP

Acute psychosis and serotonin syndrome in the setting of "Triple-C" overdose: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Over-the-counter medication overdose is a difficult diagnostic challenge for many physicians as common drug screening assays cannot detect these substances. We present a case of acute psychosis, serotonin syndrome, and anticholinergic overdose-like properties in the setting of Coricidin HBP Cough & Cold tablets, known by their street name Triple-C. This is the first case report we are aware of involving a patient presenting with these symptoms and requiring critical-care-level support. CASE PRESENTATION: A 31-year-old African American female with a past medical history of anxiety,

Wastewater-based monitoring of illicit drug consumption in Istanbul: Preliminary results from two districts.

Wastewater-based epidemiology is a well-established and complementary approach for monitoring illicit drug use in the general population. In this study, amphetamine (AMP), methamphetamine (METH), 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA), cocaine (COC) (from benzoylecgonine), and cannabis (from THC-COOH) consumption levels were investigated for the first time in Turkey (Istanbul). A solid-phase extraction method was applied to influent wastewater samples collected from two districts, Beyoglu and Catalca. Liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) analysis was conducted with elect

Use of psychoactive substances in persons with spinal cord injury: a literature review.

OBJECTIVE: To undertake a critical review of literature on use of legal and illegal psychoactive substances (PAS) in persons with spinal cord injury (SCI) before and after trauma. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Hundred and five articles published between 1980 and 2014 on alcohol and drug use in persons with SCI before and after trauma were retrieved from the PubMed and PsycInfo search engines. RESULTS: Before injury, 25% to 96% of people with SCI reported using alcohol, while 32% to 35% had used illegal drugs. At the time of injury, 31% to 50% of individuals with SCI were intoxicated with alcohol, 16

Substance use and response to psychiatric treatment in methadone-treated outpatients with comorbid psychiatric disorder.

The psychiatric care of opioid users receiving agonist therapies is often complicated by high rates of illicit drug use (Brooner et al., 2013). The present study evaluates if illicit drug use (i.e., opioids, cocaine, sedatives) detected at the start of psychiatric care affects treatment response. Methadone maintenance patients (n = 125) with at least one current psychiatric disorder completed a 3-month randomized clinical trial evaluating the efficacy of financial incentives on attendance to on-site integrated substance abuse and psychiatric services (Kidorf et al., 2013). The present study re

Psychoactive "bath salts" intoxication with methylenedioxypyrovalerone.

Abuse of the psychoactive "designer drug" methylenedioxypyrovalerone (MDPV) has become a serious international public health concern because of the severity of its physical and behavioral toxicities. MDPV is the primary ingredient in so-called "bath salts," labeled as such to avoid criminal prosecution and has only been classified recently as a controlled substance in the United States and some other countries. However, it remains a danger because of illegal sources, including the Internet. MDPV is a synthetic, cathinone-derivative, central nervous system stimulant and is taken to produce a co

Analyte-templated aggregate remodeling for broad-spectrum visual screening of synthetic cannabinoids.

Synthetic cannabinoids (SCs) are a rapidly evolving class of new psychoactive substances whose structural diversity continues to challenge field-deployable screening. Here we report an aggregate-remodeling sensing strategy based on an AIE-active coumarin-naphthalimide dyad (NAP-CMR) that converts the shared hydrophobic, aromatic-rich attributes of chemically diverse SCs into a high-contrast optical readout. In aqueous methanol (CH3OH) mixtures, NAP-CMR forms weakly emissive, aggregate-associated states featuring a broad, red-shifted emission band. Upon exposure to SCs, the analytes act as stru

Matrix Effects of Urine Marker Substances in LC-MS/MS Analysis of Drug of Abuse.

BACKGROUND: Analysis of drug abuse is frequently performed using high-performance liquid chromatography with an MS/MS detector and electrospray ionization. In this context, matrix effects, like signal reduction by ion suppression of individual analytes, play an important role. In this study, the authors evaluated the matrix effect caused by polyethylene glycol (PEG) with chain lengths ranging from 6 to 12 repeating units in drug analysis by LC-MS/MS. Selected chain lengths were used in the Ruma urine marker system. METHODS AND RESULTS: Amphetamines, opiates, opioids, antidepressants, psychoti

[Silica-containing urinary stones--clinical issues to keep in mind].

Formation of calculi in efferent urinary passages is always due to supersaturation of urinary calculi substances and associated increased crystallization. Apart from the typical calculi, consisting of calcium oxalate, inorganic phosphates, uric acid or cystine, there are occasional signs of rare substance classes. Although more than 50 silicate stones have already been reported internationally, this stone entity remains relatively unknown. In particular, the occurrence of silicate stones in the absence of magnesium trisilicate abuse is extremely rare. A medium-sized left-sided ureterolith was

Effects of phentermine and fenfluramine on extracellular dopamine and serotonin in rat nucleus accumbens: therapeutic implications.

Combined administration of the amphetamine analogs phentermine and fenfluramine (PHEN/FEN) has been used in the treatment of obesity. While these medications are thought to modulate monoamine transmission, the precise neurochemical effects of the PHEN/FEN mixture have not been extensively studied. To assess the mechanism of PHEN/FEN action, in vivo microdialysis studies were performed in the nucleus accumbens of conscious freely moving rats. A series of amphetamine derivatives including phentermine, chlorphentermine, fenfluramine, and PHEN/FEN (1:1 ratio), were infused locally into the accumbe
