Many vector-borne pathogens (VBPs), including Ehrlichia canis and Dirofilaria immitis, may infect simultaneously dogs in areas where Leishmania infantum is endemic, especially in the tropics, where highly abundant arthropod vectors thrive. The aim of this study was to compare the frequency of simultaneous VBPs infection in Leishmania-positive and Leishmania-negative dogs. Animals enrolled in this study were divided in two groups (G1 and G2), G1 being comprised of L. infantum-infected dogs (n = 58) and the G2 of L. infantum-negative dogs (n = 58). Blood samples were screened using a qualitative

The eyelids are a delicate and complex dynamic structure with primary function to protect the eye surface. The term «meibomian gland dysfunction» (MGD) first appeared in the mid-1980s. This lesion is known to result in a disturbance of the tear film, eye irritation symptoms, clinically significant inflammation and diseases of the eye surface. The progression of MGD leads to hyperosmolarity of the tear film, its instability, an increase in the bacterial load of the eyelid margin, blepharitis and generalized inflammation of the ocular surface. For patients who require surgical treatment, a healt

Q fever, caused by Coxiella burnetii, is a zoonotic disease responsible of abortion in ruminants. Few studies have investigated the prevalence of this infection in camels (Camelus dromedarius). The present report aimed to highlight the epidemiological status and identify the risk factors associated with C. burnetii infection in one-humped dromedary that is the most productive livestock species in arid areas. A total of 534 sera of healthy camels were collected in eight governorates from southern and central Tunisia. Samples were tested by an indirect Enzyme linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA).

The natural history of Ehrlichia chaffeensis, the causative agent of human monocytotropic ehrlichiosis, includes the lone star tick (LST, Amblyomma americanum) as a vector and white-tailed deer (WTD; Odocoileus virginianus) as both a natural reservoir of E. chaffeensis and a major host of LST. The goal of the current study was to implement and evaluate a prototype surveillance system to delineate the geographic distribution of E. chaffeensis using WTD as natural sentinels. To accomplish this goal, serologic testing using the indirect immunofluorescent antibody (IFA) test was performed on WTD s

Rodents of the genus Apodemus are among the most widespread and abundant small mammals in Europe and play a central role in the ecology of numerous zoonotic pathogens. Owing to their ecological plasticity, high population densities, and frequent infestation by arthropod vectors, Apodemus species contribute to the maintenance and transmission of a diverse array of bacterial, viral, and protozoan agents of public health concern. This narrative review synthesises current knowledge on vector-borne pathogens associated with European Apodemus spp. and highlights marked heterogeneity in species-speci

Equine piroplasmosis, caused by Theileria equi, has been widely studied globally, but genetic diversity research in India remains limited. Analysis of 306 horse blood samples revealed T. equi infection in 10.78% by microscopy and 21.24% by PCR. Universal primers targeting 18S rRNA of T. equi and Babesia caballi were used, followed by species-specific primers generating 435 bp amplicons. Sequenced PCR-positive samples revealed high homology (99.52-100% in India, 95.89-100% globally), with all Indian isolates classified as genotype A. The EMA-1 gene phylogenetic analysis confirmed the insights f

Argas species are parasites associated mostly with birds. Their infestations of the host may cause blood loss, resulting in anemia and finally death. Egypt loses millions of tons annually from birds because of these parasites. In addition, they can transmit pathogens to animals and humans. The acaricidal effects of the ethanolic and methanolic extracts of Adiantum capillus-veneris at different concentrations (1-4%) against semi-fed adults of Argas arboreus and A. persicus were investigated during 30 days after treatments. Mobility and mortality, acaricide efficacy, and the concentration that k

Vector-borne pathogens, which are transmitted by blood-feeding arthropods to animals and people, are common in tropical regions where, combined with economic factors, can cause significant public health burden. A community-level study was undertaken in southwestern Guatemala to assess the presence of vector-borne pathogens in blood samples from humans (n = 98), their animals (n = 90), and ectoparasites (n = 83) over a period of 2 weeks. Human capillary blood was collected from participant's index finger, and animal venous blood (chickens, pigs, dogs, and cats) was collected from the jugular or

Studies on cats as hosts of Rhipicephalus sanguineus sensu lato (s.l.) are scarce. Cats are regarded as infrequent hosts of this species complex, and usually only when dogs are also present. In order to compare the occurrence of developmental stages and mitochondrial DNA haplotypes of R. sanguineus s.l. on cats and other domestic or synanthropic mammalian species, 540 ticks were collected from cats, dogs, hedgehogs and one goat. Collections were made from April to September in 2016 and 2017, from 20 locations in Malta in southern Europe. The sampling sites included six cat colonies, where no d

Ticks are vectors in the transmission of many important infectious diseases in human and animals. Ticks can be readily found in the semi-forested areas such as the settlements of the indigenous people in Malaysia, the Orang Asli. There is still minimal information available on the bacterial agents associated with ticks found in Malaysia. We performed a survey of the bacterial communities associated with ticks collected from domestic animals found in two Orang Asli villages in Malaysia. We collected 62 ticks, microscopically and molecularly identified as related to Haemaphysalis wellingtoni, Ha

Global changes such as deforestation, climate change, and invasive species have the potential to greatly alter zoonotic disease systems through impacts on biodiversity. This study examined the impact of the invasive pathogen that causes sudden oak death (SOD) on the ecology of Lyme disease in California. The Lyme disease bacterium, Borrelia burgdorferi, is maintained in the far western United States by a suite of animal reservoirs including the dusky-footed woodrat (Neotoma fuscipes) and deer mouse (Peromyscus maniculatus), and is transmitted by the western black-legged tick (Ixodes pacificus)

Ticks are important vectors of numerous pathogens that impact human and animal health. The tick central nervous system represents an understudied area in tick biology and no tick synganglion-specific transcriptome has been described to date. Here we characterize whole or partial cDNA sequences of fourteen putative neuropeptides (allatostatin, insulin-like peptide, ion-transport peptide, sulfakinin, bursicon alpha/beta, eclosion hormone, glycoprotein hormone alpha/beta, corazonin, four orcokinins) and five neuropeptide receptors (gonadotropin receptor, leucokinin-like receptor, sulfakinin recep

During 2002 through 2004, 15 patients with Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF) were identified in a rural community in Arizona where the disease had not been previously reported. The outbreak was associated with Rickettsia rickettsii in an unexpected tick vector, the brown dog tick (Rhipicephalus sanguineus), which had not been previously associated with RMSF transmission in the United States. We investigated the extent of exposure to R. rickettsii in the local area through serologic evaluations of children and dogs in 2003-2004, and in canine sera from 1996. Antibodies to R. rickettsii at tit

BACKGROUND: Veterinary clinic transaction records from the USA were examined to determine dog owner purchase patterns for three prescription ectoparasiticides. In-clinic purchases of formulations of fluralaner (with 12-week duration per dose) were compared with dog owner purchases of afoxolaner and spinosad (both with 4 week duration per dose) in a population of 231,565 dogs over a 12 month period. Prior studies in human and animal medicine have suggested that patients more closely adhere to prescriber dosing recommendations when they receive a longer-duration medication.
RESULTS: Veterinary

In western and eastern Africa, rickettsioses are one cause of fever in humans. Little is known regarding the presence of Rickettsia sp. in northern Cameroon. The present work was conducted in order to identify potential tick-borne spotted fever group Rickettsia in the Adamawa region of northern Cameroon, which may contribute filling some of the knowledge gaps of these pathogens. Ticks were collected from cattle in the municipal slaughterhouse of Ngaoundere in the Adamawa region of northern Cameroon. After morphological identification of tick species, extracted DNA was analyzed by PCR targeting
