A study is presented of the effect of nisoral on the hypothalamo-pituitary-ovarian system in 25 patients with hyperandrogenism (ovarian in 11, suprarenal in 14). It was established that most patients with oligomenorrhea and anovulation showed a restoration of the menstrual cycle after the 2-3 treatment courses and also absence of progression and reduction of the rate of pathological hair growth. After nisoral treatment the testosterone level decreased while estradiol and progesterone increased, gonadotropins remained unchanged, urinary excretion of 17-ketosteroids reduced.

We report a case of acquired hypertrichosis lanuginosa associated with rectal cancer and discuss the cutaneous symptoms as a marker of malignancy. A 75-year-old man had noticed increasing growth of hair over his entire body 4 months before he was admitted to our hospital because of bloody stools. The effects on hair growth by treatment with cimetidine have been studied. This drug has been given orally to 4 women with simple hirsutism and 3 women with peptic ulcer as controls for a period of 9 months. Hair growth slowed down in all of the treated women but the results were not statistically significant. A significant decrease in urine 17-ketosteroids has been observed, while plasma levels of testosterone, 17-beta estradiol, progesterone, FSH, LH and prolactin, did not change substantially. A 51-year-old postmenopausal multipara with high plasma testosterone levels and virilization, as demonstrated by hirsutism, balding, increased libido, and clitoromegaly, is presented. The plasma testosterone levels exceeded 330 ng/dl on 3 occasions. Ectopic ACTH secretion with secondary Cushing's syndrome was observed in two patients with metastatic islet cell carcinoma and oat cell carcinoma of the lung respectively. This is a report of a case of a case of amenorrhoea-galactorrhoea syndrome with hyperprolactinaemia associated with increase of plasma androstenedione and urinary 17-ketosteroids, gradually developed in a sterile subject. Plasma LH and testosterone levels and the results of adrenal suppression and ovarian stimulation tests seem to prove, point towards, the adrenal as the likely source of androgens. Treatment with bromocryptin for 20 weeks brought about a reduction to normal of both PRL and androgens. Resumption of ovulatory cycles followed thereafter and a pregnancy eventually occurred.
