Six women, aged 24-67 years, had osteopenia and insufficiency fractures, which suggested a diagnosis of osteomalacia. The insufficiency fractures occurred at traditional sites for Looser zones, were multiple in number, were symmetrically distributed in three patients, and did not heal promptly. Bone mass was low, as assessed by single-energy photon absorptiometry at the midshaft of the radius. Two postmenopausal women had vertebral compression fractures. Biochemical indices and bone histomorphometric analysis excluded osteomalacia, and in vivo double tetracycline labeling in five patients reve

To determine whether microcrystalline hydroxyapatite compound (MCHC) could reduce bone loss or its consequences in patients with chronic active hepatitis (CAH) on corticosteroid therapy, a controlled trial was conducted in 36 such patients over a period of 2 years. Both skeletal symptoms (back pain) and fractures were uncommon during the trial period but both showed non-significant differences in favour of the MCHC group and biochemical investigations were suggestive of a reduction in parathyroid over-activity. Continued reduction in bone mineral content of the radius (photon absorptiometry) w

100 women who had taken part in a prospective controlled trial of oestrogen therapy for prevention of post-oophorectomy bone loss were reviewed after a median follow-up period of nine years. A significant reduction in height occurred among the placebo-treated group, but not in the group treated with mestranol (mean 23 x 3 micrograms/day). The placebo-treated group had a higher spine score, lower central vertebral height, and larger wedge-angle than the oestrogen group. Within each group none of these spinal morphometric changes correlated with changes in mineral content of metacarpal or radial

The bone mineral content (B.M.C.) in both forearms (related to total body calcium) was measured by photon absorptiometry for a controlled therapeutic trial in a representative sample of epileptic outpatients, comprising 226 patients treated with one or two major anticonvulsant drugs (phenytoin, phenobarbitone, primidone).Initially the mean B.M.C. value for all epileptic patients was 87% of normal. During treatment with 2,000 international units of vitamin D(2) daily for three months an average B.M.C. increase of 4% was found, whereas the B.M.C. values remained unchanged in the placebo group an

Turner's syndrome is associated with multiple skeletal abnormalities, including osteoporosis. We evaluated the hypothesis that girls with Turner's syndrome may have deficient bone density before the expected age of pubertal onset (9-13 yr) by comparing the bone mineral content of the wrist and lumbar spine in 78 girls with Turner's syndrome (4-13 yr old) and 28 normal prepubertal girls who were matched for age, bone age, body mass index, or height age. The bone mineral content of the wrist and spine was measured by single photon absorptiometry (SPA) and dual photon absorptiometry (DPA), respec

Ten male chronic schizophrenic patients with polydipsia and 10 nonpolydipsic controls, matched for gender, diagnosis, duration of illness, age, and race, were studied by dual- and single-photon absorptiometry to estimate bone density of the lumbar spine and radius and by 24-hr urine collections to estimate urinary electrolyte excretion. Bone density was normal in the control group, but was abnormally low in the polydipsic group, which had a markedly increased incidence of fractures. Electrolyte excretion was normal in the control group and in the polydipsic group when water intake was restrict

A cohort of 101 patients were treated with enteric-coated sodium fluoride tablets and calcium supplements. Vitamin D was also given in supra-physiologic doses in 70% of the cases. Lumbar bone mineral density (BMD), as measured by dual-photon absorptiometry, increased in a linear fashion up to four years, irrespective of the value of initial BMD and of the underlying condition, be it involutional osteoporosis (the vast majority), glucocorticoid osteoporosis, or even osteogenesis imperfecta. Estrogen replacement therapy (ERT) seemed to promote the fluoride-induced increase in lumbar BMD, as did

Total body bone mineral (TBBM), lean body mass (LBM), and fat mass (FM) were measured by dual photon 153Gd absorptiometry in four female groups: (a) 27 patients with hip fracture; (b) 40 patients with spinal crush fracture; (c) 17 patients with osteoarthrosis, and (d) 26 healthy postmenopausal women. TBBM was significantly decreased in the two osteoporotic groups. The FM tended to be smaller in the two osteoporotic groups and larger in the osteoarthrotic group compared to the control group, whereas, LBM was virtually equal in all four groups. A significant negative correlation (p less than 0.0

We describe a new method for assessing the skeletal Ca/P ratio in vivo using X-ray absorptiometry. By placing cerium (Ce) and samarium (Sm) filters in the X-ray beam from a commercial X-ray source (Norland), mean photon energies of 39 and 89 keV were obtained. The instrument was designed to take measurements of the forearm, at a site located at the distal 1/3 of the radius. The system was calibrated with three bone phantoms: Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2, Ca(HPO4)(H2O)2 and Ca(HPO4)2(H2O)). The precision for measuring the Ca/P ratio in the human radius was 2.3% CV for a skin dose to the forearm ranging from

A rational approach to the diagnosis of osteoporosis by the primary care physician is outline, with emphasis on the patient who presents with chronic back pain and a vertebral compression fracture. The basic information includes data from the patient's history and physical examination, laboratory, x-ray and bone biopsy studies, and determination of bone mineral content (BMC) by photon absorptiometry. Characteristic radiologic features associated with bone loss, BMC changes, and bone biopsy findings are illustrated. This diagnostic approach, summarized in a flow diagram, poses a series of quest

Osteopenia is a common complication in primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC). In this follow-up study the authors investigated the metabolic bone disease in postmenopausal PBC patients. 17 Ca and vitamin D supplemented, postmenopausal female patients with PBC (stage II-IV, age: 41-84, mean: 52, each AMA M2 positive, without ascites) were followed-up for an average of 6.3 years. Bone mineral density (BMD) was measured yearly by dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (XR26, Norland) in lumbar spine (L2-4), femoral neck (FN), and radius BMC by single photon absorptiometry. Urinary pyridinoline/creatinine (Py

In a cross-sectional study of 39 patients with medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC), we have investigated the effects of long-term calcitonin excess on bone mineral density. Bone mineral density was measured by dual X-ray absorptiometry at the lumbar spine between the second and fourth vertebra and by single photon absorptiometry at the distal forearm. The mean observation time of each patient between diagnosis of tumour and measurement of bone mineral density was 62.4 months (range 1-158 months). The mean calcitonin serum level was 14.4 micrograms/l at the time of measurement of bone mineral den

With the advent of dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) total body scans can be done in only 10-20 minutes rather than the 60-80 minutes required by dual-photon absorptiometry (DPA). The DXA approach replace the Gd153 radionuclide source of DPA and provides substantially greater output intensity. The higher radiation flux achievable provides several advantages over conventional DPA: this makes total body scans routinely accessible. The measures of the entire skeleton and its major subregions cut down the problems of representativeness and relocation. The short term precision (coefficient of

OBJECTIVES: To conduct a systematic review evaluating the performance of deep learning (DL) tools in osteoporosis screening using dental imaging and to assess whether these models have been implemented in dental practice.
METHODS: Search was performed across 7 electronic databases and 2 sources of grey literature. Included studies applied DL algorithms to dental radiographs or CT in adults diagnosed with osteoporosis, using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) or expert assessment as the reference standard. Risk of bias was assessed using the QUADAS-2 (Quality Assessment of Diagnostic Accur

Measuring bone density by DXA is a routine means of predicting fracture risk. These 2-dimensional images have limitations and may underestimate the risk of fracture due to inadequate evaluation of bone strength. The inclusion of clinical risk factors, calculating FRAX and adding TBS values all improve our ability in bone screening by DXA. However, secondary osteoporosis is not always associated with classical risk factors for bone loss. In addition, unrecognized underlying conditions may contribute to further bone loss and increased risk of low trauma fracture. Therefore, new technologies that

OBJECTIVE: This systematic review evaluated the diagnostic accuracy of CBCT for BMD assessment using DEXA as the reference standard and aimed to quantify its performance through meta-analysis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This review included prospective and retrospective observational studies assessing CBCT's diagnostic performance in detecting low BMD, with DEXA as the reference. Searches in PubMed, Embase, and Scopus identified 13 eligible studies involving adult participants (≥ 18 years). Two reviewers independently extracted data and assessed study quality using the QUADAS-2 tool. Meta-analysi

INTRODUCTION: Sarcopenia is a progressive skeletal muscle disorder associated with adverse clinical outcomes, including functional decline, frailty, and mortality in older adults. Although dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) is recommended as the reference method for the assessment of muscle mass, its limited availability restricts widespread clinical implementation. Musculoskeletal ultrasonography (US) has emerged as a promising alternative due to its portability, low cost, and absence of ionizing radiation; however, its validity relative to DXA in older populations remains insufficiently

Clinical trial readiness is an important topic in the field of facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHD). As FSHD is a slowly progressive and clinically heterogeneous disease, imaging biomarkers have been proposed to complement clinical outcome measures. Muscle magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), ultrasound and dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) have been used to measure disease severity, activity and progression. We conducted a scoping review of the literature on these imaging modalities to assess gaps in knowledge and subsequently collaborated with a panel of neuromuscular imaging exp

Dual-energy X‑ray absorptiometry (DXA) assessing the lumbar spine and bilateral proximal femurs is the current guideline-recommended standard method for quantitative measurement of bone density. The output of DXA-the T score-reflects the number of standard deviations by which the measured bone density differs from the average of a healthy young reference population. The operational World Health Organization (WHO) definition of osteoporosis is based on a T score ≤-2.5 at the femoral neck, although other measurement locations are interpreted analogously in clinical routine. Numerous studies have

High amplitudes of shock during running have been thought to be associated with an increased injury risk. This study aimed to quantify the association between dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) quantified body composition, and shock attenuation across the time and frequency domains. Twenty-four active adults participated. A DEXA scan was performed to quantify the fat and fat-free mass of the whole-body, trunk, dominant leg, and viscera. Linear accelerations at the tibia, pelvis, and head were collected whilst participants ran on a treadmill at a fixed dimensionless speed 1.00 Fr. Shock at
