On the basis of studying the immediate and long-term results of treatment of 329 patients with calcinated mitral stenosis, the progressive aggravation of the immediate outcome of the operation in II and III-IV degree of mitral valve calcinosis is demonstrated. The data have been confirmed by actuarial analysis of the patients' survival and stability of a good result. The authors consider it expedient to perform mitral commissurotomy only in patients without valvular calcinosis and I degree calcinosis. In more severe affection, mitral valve replacement is indicated.

UNLABELLED: We studied 187 patients who presented with mild congenital aortic valve stenosis or a bicuspid aortic valve without stenosis at presentation; 63% were males. Information on all clinical events was obtained, and patients were traced to assess current clinical status.

From 1976 to 1988, 23 adolescent and adult patients underwent total correction of tetralogy of Fallot. There were 13 males and 10 females, ranging in age from 16 to 47 years (mean 24.3 +/- 8.6 years). During a 12 year period from 1978 to 1989, 35 infants under 4 weeks of age underwent palliative surgery for complex congenital cyanotic heart disease with a short (1-1.5 cm) PTFE graft between the ascending aorta and the right pulmonary artery (modified Waterston shunt). Many elderly patients (aged over 60) are waiting for renal allograft but are considered a risk population for myocardial infarction or sudden cardiac death. This report describes the natural history of unrepaired minor technical defects detected by intraoperative B-mode ultrasonography during carotid endarterectomy. Intraoperative ultrasonography was used to assess the technical adequacy of 80 carotid endarterectomies. Between February 1, 1982, and June 30, 1988, 32 children underwent cardiac transplantation for treatment of congenital heart disease (10) and other cardiomyopathies (22). Results after radiotherapy, alone or combined with surgery, applied prior to 1982 in 1700 patients with localized ENT tumors showed 669 (39%) of T and/or N failures and isolated second ENT localizations. A trend to amputate below knee (BK) began in the late 1960's when the disadvantages of above knee (AK) amputation were recognised. In this study, the outcome of 189 consecutive patients who had major lower extremity amputations between 1978-1982 was compared to earlier reports from the same institution. Their cumulative survival of 52% at three years, was similar to the cumulative survival of 116 amputees whose surgery was done in 1966-1971. The subsequent progress of 152 patients treated medically in the Nottingham hospitals for bleeding gastric ulceration was analysed four to eight years later by the use of life tables. Results of coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery in patients under age 36 who were operated upon between 1970 and 1980 at two large medical centers were compared to matched control patients, age 45 to 59 years, and 60 years and over. Patient follow-up ranged from one to 13 years (average five years). A prospective study on 289 women with clinical stage I cutaneous melanoma was done to determine the relationship between estrogen administration, tumor characteristics, and survival.
