Comparison of changes in gene expression of transferrin receptor-1 and other iron-regulatory proteins in rat liver and brain during acute-phase response.

The "acute phase" is clinically characterized by homeostatic alterations such as somnolence, adinamia, fever, muscular weakness, and leukocytosis. Dramatic changes in iron metabolism are observed under acute-phase conditions. Rats were administered turpentine oil (TO) intramuscularly to induce a sterile abscess and killed at various time points. Tissue iron content in the liver and brain increased progressively after TO administration. Immunohistology revealed an abundant expression of transferrin receptor-1 (TfR1) in the membrane and cytoplasm of the liver cells, in contrast to almost only nu

Protein Z and Protein Z Complex in the Acute Phase of Ischemic Stroke: Potential Markers of Coagulation and Prognostic Value in Patients Treated with Thrombolysis or Conservative Therapy.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Protein Z (PZ) and the protein Z-dependent protease inhibitor (ZPI) are vitamin K-dependent regulators of coagulation that inhibit activated factor Xa. Their relevance in ischemic stroke (IS) remains insufficiently characterized, with inconsistent evidence regarding their association with stroke severity and outcomes. This study aimed to evaluate the concentrations and dynamics of PZ and ZPI in the acute phase of IS in patients treated with intravenous thrombolysis or conservative therapy and to assess their potential prognostic significance. METHODS: Eighty-four patien

FengLiao affects gut microbiota and the expression levels of Na+/H+ exchangers, aquaporins and acute phase proteins in mice with castor oil-induced diarrhea.

The severe side effects of chemosynthetic anti-diarrhea drugs have created an interest in low-toxic alternative plant-derived compounds. FengLiao consists of Polygonum hydropiper Linn. and Daphniphyllum calycinum Bench., and is widely used in China to treat diarrhea due to low levels of toxicity. In this study, the effects of FengLiao were analyzed in a castor oil-induced diarrhea model, using the anti-diarrhea drug, loperamide, as the positive control. The effects were evaluated using stool characteristics and the expression levels of various diarrhea-related factors in the jejunum and liver,

Ameliorating effect of Kalpaamruthaa, a Siddha preparation in adjuvant induced arthritis in rats with reference to changes in proinflammatory cytokines and acute phase proteins.

BACKGROUND: As disease initiation and propagation still represents a research question in rheumatoid arthritis (RA), the cytokines play a central role in the inflammatory articular process including the synovial proliferation and cartilage destruction in RA and understanding the role of these cytokines in turn exploits them as therapeutic targets in RA. OBJECTIVES: The present study illustrates the beneficial outcome of the Siddha drug Kalpaamruthaa (KA) in reducing the pathological lesions caused by the proinflammatory cytokines in adjuvant induced arthritis (AIA) in rats. KA consists of Sem

The secretion of acute phase proteins and inflammatory cytokines during Trypanosoma congolense infection is not affected by the absence of the TNF-alpha gene.

Tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) plays a role in the host's defence against infections with African trypanosomes. It helps to control the blood stream form of the parasite and in Trypanosoma congolense infections, it also prolongs survival. The mechanisms by which this cytokine can influence parasitemia and survival are unknown. Therefore, the levels of acute phase proteins and other inflammatory cytokines were monitored in trypano-tolerant wild-type and TNF-alpha-deficient mice during a T. congolense infection. The titres of ceruloplasmin (CP), alpha1-acid glycoprotein (AGP) and serum

[Heat shock protein family A member 5 regulation of ferroptosis alleviates acute-phase mucosal injury in ulcerative colitis].

Objective: This study aimed to investigate the role of heat shock protein family A member 5 (HSPA5) in ferroptosis at its regulatory mechanisms in ulcerative colitis (UC), using both a dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced mouse model of acute colitis and in vitro cell experiments. Methods: Differentially expressed genes in UC were identified using the GSE87466 dataset from the Gene Expression Omnibus, cross-referenced with the ferroptosis-related gene database FerrDB (version 2). A protein-protein interaction (PPI) network was constructed, identifying HSPA5 as a core hub gene. To validate its

Acute exercise performed during the late consolidation phase improves memory persistence by hippocampal protein synthesis and catecholamine modulation.

Memory persistence is a crucial aspect of long-term memory (LTM) and involves late consolidation processes that modulate memory stability over time. Acute physical exercise (PE) has emerged as a potential strategy to modulate memory consolidation and enhance memory persistence. While its effects have been extensively explored in the early consolidation phase, its impact on the late phase remains unexplored. In this study, we investigated the effects and mechanisms of an acute PE on the late consolidation window of novel object recognition (NOR) memory in rats. A 30-minute running session appli

Estimation of YKL-40 Acute-Phase Protein in Serum of Patients with Periodontal Disease and Healthy Individuals: A Clinical-Biochemical Study.

OBJECTIVE: YKL-40, an acute-phase protein, is a novel potential inflammatory marker. It is a member of "mammalian chitinase-like proteins." YKL-40 is secreted by activated neutrophils and macrophages in both acute and chronic inflammation. It is also shown to be produced by vascular smooth muscle and endothelial cells, arthritic chondrocytes, cancer cells, and embryonic and fetal cells. It might play an important role in the initiation or maintenance of pro-inflammatory response. The purpose of the present study was to estimate the concentrations of YKL-40 in the serum of healthy and periodont

Compartmentalization of acute phase reactants Interleukin-6, C-Reactive Protein and Procalcitonin as biomarkers of intra-amniotic infection and chorioamnionitis.

BACKGROUND: The arsenal of maternal and amniotic fluid (AF) immune response to local or systemic infection includes among others the acute-phase reactants IL-6, C-Reactive Protein (CRP) and Procalcitonin (PCT). If these molecules can be used as non-invasive biomarkers of intra-amniotic infection (IAI) in the subclinical phase of the disease remains incompletely known. METHODS: We used time-matched maternal serum, urine and AF from 100 pregnant women who had an amniocentesis to rule out IAI in the setting of preterm labor, PPROM or systemic inflammatory response (SIR: pyelonephritis, appendici

Divergent antimicrobial peptide (AMP) and acute phase protein (APP) responses to Trypanosoma congolense infection in trypanotolerant and trypanosusceptible cattle.

African animal trypanosomiasis (AAT) is endemic across Sub-Saharan African and is a major constraint to livestock production. The ability of certain cattle breeds to remain productive despite infection is known as trypanotolerance; however, the underlying immune mechanisms contributing to this trait remain poorly understood. Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) and acute phase proteins (APPs) are evolutionarily conserved effector molecules of the innate immune system that have important roles in the resolution of infection and activation of the adaptive immune response. Expression levels of AMP genes

Central catecholamine, sympathetic nerve and vascular protein in the acute phase of two-kidney, one-clip renovascular hypertension in rats.

Incorporation of 3H-proline into the non-collagenous protein in mesenteric arteries in two-kidney, one-clip hypertensive rats was greater than that in normotensive rats. Splanchnicotomy predominantly over the root of mesenteric arteries or intracranioventricular injection of 6-hydroxydopamine prevented the development of hypertension in 2K-1C rats concomitant with the reduction of incorporation of 3H-proline into the non-collagenous protein in mesenteric arteries. The content of norepinephrine in the hypothalamus in 2K-1C rats was lower than that in normotensive control rats. These findings in

The effects of alpha M-foetoprotein, an acute phase protein, and BaSO4-induced injury on IgE-mediated, systemic anaphylaxis in the rat.

A recently developed method for inducing fatal, IgE-mediated, bronchial and cardiovascular anaphylaxis in the rat was used to compare the effects of exogenously administered, purified alpha M-foetoprotein (alpha M FP) and BaSO4 pretreatment (as mean to induce an acute phase reaction with increased alpha M FP serum levels) with regard to mortality, bronchoconstriction and cardiovascular events. The BaSO4 pretreatment protected the rats almost completely against mortality, whereas exogenously administered alpha M FP offered no protection at all. With respect to the antigen-induced bronchoconstri

Associations between lung consolidation and serum amyloid A and haptoglobin, and the potential of acute phase proteins to differentiate primary respiratory tract pathogens in calves.

Bovine respiratory disease (BRD) remains a leading cause of economic losses, hampered animal welfare, and antimicrobial use. The use of acute phase proteins (APP), such as serum amyloid A (SAA) and haptoglobin (Hp), has been explored for the detection of BRD, as defined by clinical signs. However, whether these APP are also associated with lung consolidation, as determined by thoracic ultrasonography, and have the potential to differentiate causative pathogens, is unknown. Therefore, the primary objective of this study was to explore the association between lung consolidation and SAA and Hp. T

Evaluation of acute phase proteins, adiponectin and endothelin-1 to determine vascular damage in dogs with heartworm disease (Dirofilaria immitis), before and after adulticide treatment.

Previous studies have shown the existence of an acute phase response in dogs with heartworm (Dirofilaria immitis), probably caused by the vascular inflammation that occurs during the pathogenesis of this disease. In addition, it has been seen that this acute phase response persists after finishing treatment, especially in dogs with pulmonary hypertension (PH). Furthermore, echocardiographic studies have shown that PH and endarteritis appear to persist for at least 10 months after completion of adulticide treatment, suggesting that the vascular changes in these dogs may not be reversible. There

Interactions between Hepatitis C Virus and the Human Apolipoprotein H Acute Phase Protein: A Tool for a Sensitive Detection of the Virus.

The Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection exhibits a high global prevalence frequently associated with hepatocellular carcinoma, taking years to develop. Despite the standardization of highly sensitive HCV quantitative RT-PCR (qRT-PCR) detection methods, false-negative diagnoses may be generated with current methods, mainly due to the presence of PCR inhibitors and/or low viral loads in the patient's sample. These false-negative diagnoses impact both public health systems, in developing countries, and an in lesser extent, in developed countries, including both the risk of virus transmission during

The acute-phase reactant C-reactive protein binds to phosphorylcholine-expressing Neisseria meningitidis and increases uptake by human phagocytes.

Neisseria meningitidis is a global cause of meningitis and septicemia. Immunity to N. meningitidis involves both innate and specific mechanisms with killing by serum bactericidal activity and phagocytic cells. C-reactive protein (CRP) is an acute-phase serum protein that has been shown to help protect the host from several bacterial pathogens, which it recognizes by binding to phosphorylcholine (PC) on their surfaces. Pathogenic Neisseria species can exhibit phase-variable PC modification on type 1 and 2 pili. We have shown that CRP can bind to piliated meningococci in a classical calcium-depe

Bone marrow parasite load assessed by qPCR in canine leishmaniosis: Correlation and agreement with clinical status, LeishVet staging, acute phase proteins, and hematologic alterations at diagnosis.

Canine leishmaniosis causes clinical and clinicopathological abnormalities, including hematological and acute phase proteins changes. Although quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) improves diagnosis and bone marrow is one of the most sensitive samples for parasite detection, their correlation with parasite burden remains unclear. This cross-sectional study evaluated the correlation and agreement between bone marrow qPCR parasite load, clinical status, LeishVet stage, acute phase proteins, and cell blood count (CBC) alterations in dogs with leishmaniosis at diagnosis.
