Proteomics approach to the study of cattle tick adaptation to white tailed deer.

Cattle ticks, Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus, are a serious threat to animal health and production. Some ticks feed on a single host species while others such as R. microplus infest multiple hosts. White tailed deer (WTD) play a role in the maintenance and expansion of cattle tick populations. However, cattle ticks fed on WTD show lower weight and reproductive performance when compared to ticks fed on cattle, suggesting the existence of host factors that affect tick feeding and reproduction. To elucidate these factors, a proteomics approach was used to characterize tick and host proteins

Local trophic specialisation in a cosmopolitan spider (Araneae).

Trophic specialisation can be observed in species with long-term constant exploitation of a certain prey in all populations or in a population of a species with short-term exploitation of a certain prey. While in the former case the species would evolve stereotyped or specialised trophic adaptations, the trophic traits of the latter should be versatile or generalised. Here, we studied the predatory behavioural adaptations of a presumed myrmecophagous spider, Oecobius navus. We chose two distinct populations, one in Portugal and the other in Uruguay. We analysed the actual prey of both populati

Why is Southern African canine babesiosis so virulent? An evolutionary perspective.

Canine babesiosis is a common, highly virulent disease in Southern Africa with even pups and juveniles being severely affected. This contrasts with bovine babesiosis, for example, where host, parasite and vector co-evolved and young animals develop immunity after infection without showing clinical signs. Babesia rossi, the main causative organism of canine babesiosis in sub-Saharan Africa, was first described from a side-striped jackal (Canis adustus) in Kenya. Although data are meagre, there is evidence that indigenous African canids, such as jackals and wild dogs (Lycaon pictus), can harbour

The evolution of human pathogens: examples and clinical implications.

Recent advances in sequencing of complete bacterial genomes, molecular typing of micro-organisms, and research on microbial pathogenicity factors changed our view on the evolution of human bacterial pathogens. We review current evolutionary concepts on plague and meningococcal disease to illustrate the interplay of molecular phylogeny, epidemiology, and pathogenicity research. Furthermore, examples of the tremendous velocity of bacterial evolution under changing environmental conditions will be discussed.

A mechanism of peripheral spread or localization of inflammatory reactions--role of the localized ground substance adaptive phenomenon.

It is known that connective tissue-active peptides (CTAP) are released at sites of inflammation. Some of this material diffuses to immediately adjacent tissue and increases ground substance viscosity and fibroblast proliferation. This contributes to host protection against spread of infections and tumors. In a person with normal inflammatory reactivity, it should prevent spread of mediators and products of local inflammation. However, the host with an increased reactivity in sites of increased ground substance viscosity or who is highly reactive to dilution of tissue fluid would respond with m

Site of water vapor absorption in the desert cockroach, Arenivaga investigata.

The desert cockroach, Arenivaga investigata, can gain weight by absorption of water-vapor from unsaturated atmospheres above 82.5% relative humidity. Blocking the anus or the dorsal surface with wax does not prevent water vapor uptake, but interference with movements of the mouthparts or blocking the mouth with wax-prevents such uptake. Weight gains are associated with the protrusion from the mouth of two bladder-like extensions of the hypopharynx. During absorption these structures are warmer than the surrounding mouthparts, their surface temperature increasing with relative humidity. This su

Investigation of salivary microRNAs as non-invasive biomarkers for weaning stress in piglets: A preliminary study.

Weaning exposes piglets to abrupt nutritional and environmental changes that induce physiological stress. Saliva, unlike serum or tissue samples, enables repeated and stress-free sampling, making it a practical biological matrix for monitoring early-life adaptation. To evaluate whether salivary microRNAs (miRNAs) can serve as non-invasive indicators of these responses, we profiled miRNA expression in saliva collected from suckling and weaning piglets. Small RNA sequencing was conducted to detect salivary miRNAs and a total of 41 differentially expressed miRNAs (DEMs) were detected between the

Possible association between phages, Hoc protein, and the immune system.

Mammals have become "an environment" for enterobacterial phage life cycles. Therefore it could be expected that bacteriophages adapt to them. This adaptation must comprise bacteriophage proteins. Gp Hoc seems to have significance neither for phage particle structure nor for phage antibacterial activity. It is evidently not necessary for the "typical" antibacterial actions of bacteriophages. But the rules of evolution make it improbable that gp Hoc really has no function, and non-essential genes of T4-type phages are probably important for phages' adaptation to their particular lifestyle. Venezuelan equine encephalitis.

Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus (VEEV) remains a naturally emerging disease threat as well as a highly developed biological weapon. Recently, progress has been made in understanding the complex ecological and viral genetic mechanisms that coincide in time and space to generate outbreaks. Enzootic, equine avirulent, serotype ID VEEV strains appear to alter their serotype to IAB or IC, and their vertebrate and mosquito host range, to mediate repeated VEE emergence via mutations in the E2 envelope glycoprotein that represent convergent evolution. Adaptation to equines results in highly effic

Human Phenotypic Diversity: An Evolutionary Perspective.

As humans migrated across the world, they encountered new environments requiring them to adapt to new challenges that presented themselves. The distribution of human phenotypes observed today is the result of this continuous adaptation, via biological/physiological and cultural means, and also by the modification of cultural practices, which leads to biological changes. In this chapter, we examine a number of adaptive traits and the roles played by their genetic and environmental determinants. We have selected a few traits used for human identification purposes (externally visible characterist

Biomarkers for monitoring racehorse musculoskeletal injuries and injury risk.

In most catastrophic racehorse fractures, postmortem examinations have found evidence of chronic accumulation of microdamage attributed to high-stress loading during high-speed exercise. Biological responses to this microdamage accumulation may be an avenue to identify biomarkers indicative of this damage, offering insight into musculoskeletal adaptation and dysregulation. Since the first description of an equine bone degradation biomarker in 1975, our understanding of various biological molecules associated with bone modeling, remodeling, and damage has greatly improved, although none has bec

Growth and adaptation mechanisms of tumour spheroids with time-dependent oxygen availability.

Tumours are subject to external environmental variability. However, in vitro tumour spheroid experiments, used to understand cancer progression and develop cancer therapies, have been routinely performed for the past fifty years in constant external environments. Furthermore, spheroids are typically grown in ambient atmospheric oxygen (normoxia), whereas most in vivo tumours exist in hypoxic environments. Therefore, there are clear discrepancies between in vitro and in vivo conditions. We explore these discrepancies by combining tools from experimental biology, mathematical modelling, and stat

GRASPing the unconventional secretory machinery to bridge cellular stress signaling to the extracellular proteome.

Cellular adaptation to stress is a crucial homeostatic process for survival, metabolism, physiology, and disease. Cells respond to stress stimuli (e.g., nutrient starvation, growth factor deprivation, hypoxia, low energy, etc.) by changing the activity of signaling pathways, and interact with their environment by qualitatively and quantitatively modifying their intracellular, surface, and extracellular proteomes. How this delicate communication takes place is a hot topic in cell biological research, and has important implications for human disease.

[Ethnic variations of scalp hair].

There has been no polytypical variation in human hairforms for at least the last 10,000 years. In view of the wide variety of hair forms, it must be assumed that biological adaptation has occurred. Several features of the scalp hair, such as form, color, thickness, density, maximal length, tensile strength, etc. are clearly genetically determined. When dealing with diseases of the hair, it may be useful for the dermatologist to distinguish between "hair" and "hair".

[The significance of magnesium in medicine. (I) Biological function, homeostasis, ingestion and excretion (author's transl)].

Magnesium (Mg) has numerous biological functions, one of the most important being its role in the metabolism of ATP. In addition it is a significant structural element in DNA and membranes. Parathormone and metabolites of vitamin D affect Mg homeostasis. The intestinal absorption depends principally on the amount and availability of the Mg in the diet. The Mg content of the organism is effectively regulated on the other hand by adaptation of the renal excretion.

The Mastigamoeba balamuthi Genome and the Nature of the Free-Living Ancestor of Entamoeba.

The transition of free-living organisms to parasitic organisms is a mysterious process that occurs in all major eukaryotic lineages. Parasites display seemingly unique features associated with their pathogenicity; however, it is important to distinguish ancestral preconditions to parasitism from truly new parasite-specific functions. Here, we sequenced the genome and transcriptome of anaerobic free-living Mastigamoeba balamuthi and performed phylogenomic analysis of four related members of the Archamoebae, including Entamoeba histolytica, an important intestinal pathogen of humans. We aimed to

Complex craniofacial changes in blind cave-dwelling fish are mediated by genetically symmetric and asymmetric loci.

The genetic regulators of regressive craniofacial morphologies are poorly understood. To shed light on this problem, we examined the freshwater fish Astyanax mexicanus, a species with surface-dwelling and multiple independent eyeless cave-dwelling forms. Changes affecting the skull in cavefish include morphological alterations to the intramembranous circumorbital bones encircling the eye. Many of these modifications, however, have evolved separately from eye loss, such as fragmentation of the third suborbital bone. To understand the genetic architecture of these eye-independent craniofacial al
