Psychological traits associated with mental and performance resilience in long-distance and ultra-endurance runners: a systematic review.

OBJECTIVE: Evidence on psychological traits in distance running remains fragmented across constructs, race contexts, and outcome definitions, while previous syntheses have generally addressed mental health, motivation, personality, or sport resilience separately. This review aimed to integrate and critically appraise psychological traits associated with both mental adaptation and performance continuity in long-distance and ultra-endurance runners while mapping concentrations and gaps in the evidence. METHODS: This systematic review, reported in accordance with PRISMA 2020, searched PubMed, Sc

Psychosocial Aspects of Short Stature and rhGH Treatment: Implicit Trends over 60+ Years.

Between 1958 and today, advances in research and the clinical management of short stature with GH have occurred. Initially, limited supply of pituitary-derived hGH led to strict criteria for diagnosing GH deficiency and tightly controlled treatment protocols. With the advent of biosynthetic GH, the supply has increased, the number of indications for treatment has grown, and the focus of intervention changed from hormone replacement to treatment of short stature. Improved psychosocial adaptation is an underlying, albeit largely unspoken and inadequately researched, target of treatment. Complica

The Association between Psychological Suzhi and Psychological Distress among Students: A Systematic Review and Three-level Meta-analysis.

Psychological suzhi, a culturally rooted construct born of China’s quality-oriented education reform, denotes an integrated collection of positive psychological qualities in children and adolescents, forming a dynamic inner system buffers distress and fosters mental health. Numerous studies have investigated the relationship between psychological suzhi and psychological distress among students, yet a definitive consensus remains elusive. A three-level meta-analysis was conducted to synthesize results from existing research and examine the relationship. Moderator analysis was used to investigat

Psychotraumatology: What researchers and clinicians can learn from an evolutionary perspective.

This review outlines the contribution of evolutionary science to experimental and clinical psychotraumatology. From an evolutionary perspective, traumatic and psychosocial stressors are conceived of as events or circumstances that thwart the achievement of biological goals. The more important is the adaptive value of the goal, the more painful is the emotional impact of the life event that endangers goal achievement. Life history theory and sexual selection theory help to explain why goal priorities differ between the sexes and across age groups. Cultural values and social learning interact wi

From dysfunction to adaptation: an interactionist model of dependency.

Contrary to clinical lore, a dependent personality style is associated with active as well as passive behavior and may be adaptive in certain contexts (e.g., in fostering compliance with medical and psychotherapeutic treatment regimens). The cognitive/interactionist model conceptualizes dependency-related responding in terms of four components: (a) motivational (a marked need for guidance, support, and approval from others); (b) cognitive (a perception of oneself as powerless and ineffectual); (c) affective (a tendency to become anxious when required to function autonomously); and (d) behavior

Experimentally testing Taylor's stress, coping and adaptation framework.

Taylor (1995) constructed a comprehensive framework of stress and adaptation, which considers internal and external resources/impediments as moderators, based on previous studies and models. However, most past research used correlation designs and has not taken into account all of the framework's components within one study. This study tested the effects of the event (minor, major), primary appraisal (benign, severe), coping (problem-focused coping (PFC) versus emotion-focused coping), external resources (with/without social support), and internal impediments (hostility), on estimated distress

From problematic screen use to stress: psychological quality and academic burnout among 10- and 13-year-olds children.

BACKGROUND: In the digital age, excessive screen-related behavior among children and adolescents has been associated with adverse psychological and academic outcomes; however, the indirect associations linking problematic screen use, psychological quality, and academic burnout remain under-explored. AIM: To examine the associations among problematic screen use, psychological quality, and academic burnout among students aged 10-13 and to test whether psychological quality and its dimensions were statistically involved in the association between problematic screen use and academic burnout. Psychological aspects of chronic musculoskeletal pain.

Chronic musculoskeletal pain, by its very nature, is associated with negative emotions and psychological distress. There are individual differences in personality, coping skills, behavioral adaptation, and social support that dramatically alter the psychological outcomes of patients with chronic pain. Patients who have an aspect of central pain amplification associated with mechanical or inflammatory pain and patients with fibromyalgia (FM) are likely to exhibit higher levels of psychological distress and illness behaviors. This manuscript discusses several different constructs for the associa

Adapting a brief mindful breathing intervention for self-management of distress in advanced cancer patients: the RESOLVE-i study.

BACKGROUND: Psychological distress is common among patients with advanced cancer and can be a barrier to effective symptom management. Despite national guidance, psychological support in UK palliative care remains limited. Existing interventions are frequently delivered by untrained staff lacking confidence. Adapting evidence-based interventions offers an efficient strategy to improve care. This study describes the adaptation of a brief mindful breathing intervention, originally developed in Malaysia, for self-management of distress by patients with advanced cancer in the UK. METHODS: Using M

The Invisible Link Between Mind and Gut: The Effect of Alexithymia and Adjustment to Illness on Symptom Severity in IBS Patients With Rome IV Criteria.

BACKGROUND: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a gut-brain interaction disorder that significantly impacts quality of life, with symptoms influenced by stress, anxiety, dietary habits, and gut microbiota imbalances. Alexithymia, characterized by difficulties in identifying and expressing emotions, may exacerbate IBS symptoms by impairing stress management and illness perception. Additionally, poor adaptation to chronic illness can increase psychological burden and worsen symptom severity. METHODS: This cross-sectional study examined 148 IBS patients diagnosed using Rome IV criteria at a gastro

Pregnancy sickness: a biopsychological perspective.

Pregnancy sickness is a universal phenomenon, affecting 70% to 85% of all pregnant women. The primary symptoms of pregnancy sickness are nausea, vomiting, and food aversions. In the past, pregnancy sickness was attributed to psychological disturbances of the pregnant woman. However, recent evolutionary psychological and biopsychological studies have reconsidered pregnancy sickness as an embryo-protective mechanism, an evolutionary adaptation to protect the embryo from phytotoxins and other environmental hazards. The biopsychological perspective of pregnancy sickness as an embryo-protective mec

How perceived social support mitigates occupational stress and enhances psychological well-being in nurses returning to work after childbirth.

BACKGROUND: The return to work from maternity leave is a time when the professional demands overlap with the new responsibilities of caring for children, which may result in psychological stress for nurses. Perceived social support can be a protective resource to buffer stress and promote adaptation. OBJECTIVE: To determine if perceived social support would moderate the relationship between occupational stress and psychological well-being for nurses who returned to work after childbirth. METHOD: A cross-sectional descriptive study was carried out in ten health care facilities in Dakahlia Gov

Coping strategies as predictors of psychosocial adaptation in a sample of elderly veterans with acquired lower limb amputations.

This study examines the contribution of demographic/amputation-related variables and coping strategies to the prediction of psychosocial adaptation in veterans with acquired lower limb amputations. Multiple indicators of the psychosocial adjustment of 796 individuals in the UK aged between 26-92 years with lower limb amputations were assessed. Hierarchical linear regressions were performed to investigate relationships between demographic/amputation-related variables (i.e. age, time since amputation, amputation level and amputation aetiology), the dimensions of coping (namely problem solving, s
