Intracranial adenoid cystic carcinoma of suprasellar region.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is a relatively common head and neck tumor which grows slowly but locally aggressive and prone to recurrence. ACC most commonly arises in the major and minor salivary glands. Some rare cases of intracranial ACC with an unknown primary site have been reported. The authors present the first case of primary intracranial ACC of the suprasellar region. A 34 year-old female presented with one month's duration of visual disturbance and galactorrhea. Magnetic resonance image (MRI) showed intra- and suprasellar mass mimicking a craniopharyngioma. There was no evidence of

[Adenoid cystic carcinoma of the prostate. Clinical case].

The authors report an extremely rare case of adenoid cystic carcinoma of the prostate. No satisfactory clinical and pathological classification exists for this tumour, creating particular difficulties for therapeutic decisions and prognosis. Descriptions of cases with excellent survival rates are reported in the literature, to the extent that this is sometimes regarded as a low-malignancy tumour, but other reports also exist of massive diffusion of the pathology with fatal consequences. Advances in the knowledge of this tumour have enabled a number of earlier pathogenetic hypotheses to be rule

Detection of adenoidal hypertrophy using acoustic rhinomanometry.

Adenoidal hypertrophy is the commonest cause of nasal obstruction in the pediatric population. It may cause marked morbidity as regards respiratory physiology, facial growth and middle ear function. Determination of adenoidal presence and size is not easy. Nasal endoscopy and radiology are the most accepted modes of diagnosis and each has its disadvantages. We have used acoustic rhinometry to determine the size of adenoids. Changes in nasal volume and resistance were recorded and an easy formula was devised to determined adenoid size. This technique is easy, non-invasive and reproducible with

[Cystic adenoid carcinoma of the prostate. Report of a case].

OBJECTIVES: To describe a 41-year-old, white, male patient with a previous history of rectal pain. He was diagnosed as having a prostatic tumor and was treated with antiandrogens and irradiation, which temporarily achieved temporary symptomatic relief. When the symptoms reappeared, the patient consulted at our hospital. A multinodular tumor was detected in the rectum. Transrectal ultrasound-guided biopsy disclosed adenoid cystic carcinoma of the prostate or adjacent structures. METHODS/RESULTS: The characteristics of the lesion prompted tumor excision alone. Since the integrity of the rectal

Profile of immunoglobulin production in adenoid and tonsil lymphocytes.

The adenoids and tonsils are thought to be essential parts of the system protecting against pathogens invading the upper respiratory tracts. We have examined IgA-spot forming cells (SFC) as well as IgG- and IgM-SFC in human adenoid and tonsil lymphocytes. The majority of SPC were revealed to be IgG type in adenoid and tonsil lymphocytes. However, when the changes in the number of SFC were examined following 6 days of incubation in the presence of LPS and Con A, an increase in IgA-SFC was noted in both adenoid and tonsillar lymphocytes, suggesting that adenoid and tonsillar lymphocytes differen

[Polymicrobial infections in recurrent tonsillitis and adenoiditis in children].

Bacteriological examination focused on the aerobic and anaerobic flora from ectomized tonsils in 17 patients with recurrent tonsillitis, in 8 patients with hypertrophy of the tonsils and 122 children with an adenoid vegetation confirmed microbial aetiology. In ectomized tonsils and adenoids aerobic gram-positive bacteria comprised most frequently staphylococci, and gram-negative bacteria H. influenzae. As to anaerobic gram-positive bacteria, they isolated most frequently peptostreptococci, and as to gram-negative ones B. fragilis from tonsils and Bacteroides sp. from adenoids. In the treatment

[Adenoid cystic subglottic carcinoma. A case report].

A case of adenoid cystic carcinoma found in the laryngeal region (suglottically), extending as far as the trachea, four years postoperatively, has not yet shown signs of local recurrence nor of metastasis. The unusual features of this case are its site and favourable progress postoperatively. A study was made of the literature of this type of tumour.

A study on the relationship between adenoid vegetation and rhinosinusitis.

The relationship between adenoidal-nasopharyngeal ratios (AN ratios) and sinusitis were evaluated in 404 children. The AN ratios of children with snoring, mouth breathing, or nasal obstruction (major symptoms of adenoidal enlargement) were significantly higher than those of children without these symptoms. However, the AN ratios of children with sinusitis were almost equal to those of normal children.

Pathological and biochemical study in the adenoid of mucopolysaccharidosis II.

In the patients with mucopolysaccharidosis II (MPS II, Hunter's syndrome), conductive and sensorineural hearing deficits are frequently observed. Two patients with MPS II underwent adenoidectomy and an ear douche, and their conductive hearing loss recovered after the surgery. Pathological examination of the adenoids revealed the infiltration of faintly PAS-positive plasmacytes with perinuclear vacuole and strongly Alcian-blue positive fibrotic area. Biochemical study was performed by chromatoscanning of electropholesis. The amount of glycosaminoglicans (GAG) in the specimens was increased 2.8-

Causal association of gastroesophageal reflux disease with chronic sinusitis and chronic disease of the tonsils and adenoids.

BACKGROUND: Exploring bidirectional causal associations between gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and chronic disease of the tonsils and adenoids and chronic sinusitis, respectively. METHODS: We first conducted a TSMR (two-sample mendelian randomization) study using the results of the inverse variance weighting method as the primary basis and bidirectional MR to rule out reverse causation. Subsequently, MVMR (multivariate MR) analysis was performed to identify phenotypes associated with SNPs and to explore the independent effect of GERD on two outcomes. Finally, we calculated MR-Egger in

Unveiling the Enigmatic Adenoids and Tonsils: Exploring Immunology, Physiology, Microbiome Dynamics, and the Transformative Power of Surgery.

Within the intricate realm of the mucosal immune system resides a captivating duo: the adenoids (or pharyngeal tonsils) and the tonsils (including palatine, tubal, and lingual variations), which harmoniously form the Waldeyer's ring. As they are strategically positioned at the crossroads of the respiratory and gastrointestinal systems, these exceptional structures fulfill a vital purpose. They function as formidable "gatekeepers" by screening microorganisms-both bacteria and viruses-with the mission to vanquish local pathogens via antibody production. However, under specific circumstances, the

Effect of adenoids and tonsil tissue on pediatric obstructive sleep apnea severity determined by computational fluid dynamics.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a respiratory disorder caused by the obstruction of the upper airway during sleep. The most common cause of pediatric OSA is adenotonsillar hypertrophy. Adenotonsillectomy is the first-line treatment for pediatric OSA; however, OSA persists in a significant number of patients due, in part, to the method of evaluating enlarged adenoids and tonsil tissue. The reason for these effects on OSA severity is not clear. This study aimed to establish a method to diagnose the need for adenoidectomy or tonsillectomy. METHODS: Twenty-seven Japanese childr
