Cancer incidence and type of treatment hospital among children, adolescents, and young adults in Japan, 2016-2018.

Cancer in children, adolescents, and young adults (AYAs) although rare, is the leading disease-specific cause of death in Japan. This study aims to investigate cancer incidence and type of treatment hospital among children and AYAs in Japan. Cancer incidence data (2016-2018) for those aged 0-39 years were obtained from the Japanese population-based National Cancer Registry. Cancer types were classified according to the 2017 update of the International Classification of Childhood Cancer (Third Edition), and AYA Site Recode 2020 Revision. Cases were also categorized into three groups: those trea

Racial Disparities In In-Hospital Mortality of Children and Adolescents Under 20 Years With Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus.

BACKGROUND: In the United States, racial disparities in health outcomes continue to be a major problem with far-reaching effects on equity in healthcare and public health. Children and teenagers with type 1 diabetes are a disadvantaged demographic that has particular difficulties in managing their condition and getting access to healthcare. Despite improvements in the treatment of diabetes, little study has examined how much racial disparities in in-hospital mortality affect this particular demographic. By examining racial differences in in-hospital mortality rates among children and adolescen

Hospitalizations Associated With Mental Health Conditions Among Adolescents in the US and France During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

IMPORTANCE: The COVID-19 pandemic has been associated with an increase in mental health diagnoses among adolescents, though the extent of the increase, particularly for severe cases requiring hospitalization, has not been well characterized. Large-scale federated informatics approaches provide the ability to efficiently and securely query health care data sets to assess and monitor hospitalization patterns for mental health conditions among adolescents. OBJECTIVE: To estimate changes in the proportion of hospitalizations associated with mental health conditions among adolescents following ons

Increased symptom severity in adults and adolescents admitting to an inpatient psychiatric hospital during the COVID-19 pandemic.

While the negative effects of Coronavirus Disease-2019 (COVID-19) on general mental health are well-established, less is known about the impact on those with severe mental illness. Thus, this study examined symptom severity among psychiatric inpatients admitted prior to versus during the COVID pandemic. Self-reported anxiety (GAD-7), depression (PHQ-9), emotional dysregulation (DERS-SF), sleep quality (PSQI), nightmares (DDNSI), and suicidal ideation (SBQ-R) were examined in 470 adults (n = 235 admitted pre-pandemic) and 142 children and adolescents (n = 65 admitted pre-pandemic) at admission.

Comparing Differences between Two Groups of Adolescents Hospitalized for Self-Harming Behaviors with and without Personality Disorders.

Self-harm (non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) and suicidal behavior (SB)) is frequent display during adolescence. Patients with personality disorders (PDs) frequently self-harm. However, few studies have focused on the role of PDs in self-harming adolescents. In this study, we collected 79 adolescents hospitalized due to self-harm (88.6% female; 78.5% Caucasian) and divided them into two groups, with or without a diagnosis of PD. The socio-demographic and psychological-clinical data were collected through a structured interview by clinicians. Univariate, subgroup, and multiple logistic regression

[Socio-demographic and clinical characteristics of adolescents hospitalized in French units for inmates: Results of a cross-sectional study].

BACKGROUND: In France, on the first of January 2018, 772 underage persons were in jail or about 1.1 % of the incarcerated population. The prevalence of psychiatric disorders among those inmates is high. As a result psychiatric care (and particularly full-time hospitalization) is essential for this population. The unités hospitalières spécialement aménagées (UHSA) are full-time inpatient hospitalization units for inmates in France. Adults but also underage inmates can be admitted to UHSA for voluntary or involuntary hospitalization. However, no study about the characteristics of young patients

Subanesthetic ketamine for pain management in hospitalized children, adolescents, and young adults: a single-center cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Subanesthetic doses of ketamine, an N-methyl-d-aspartate receptor antagonist used as an adjuvant to opioid for the treatment of pain in adults with acute and chronic pain, have been shown, in some instances, to improve pain intensity and to decrease opioid intake. However, less is known about the role of ketamine in pain management in children, adolescents, and young adults. PURPOSE: We examined the effects of subanesthetic ketamine on pain intensity and opioid intake in children, adolescents, and young adults with acute and chronic pain syndromes treated in an inpatient setting.

Gender, age, and educational level attribute to blood alcohol concentration in hospitalized intoxicated adolescents; a cohort study.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of adolescents hospitalized with acute alcohol intoxication, mainly because of severe reduced consciousness, is increasing. However, the characteristics of these adolescents are mainly unidentified. In this clinical research, we aimed to identify factors that attribute to higher ethanol concentration, on which targeted alcohol health interventions can be designed. METHODS: Since 2007, alcohol intoxication among adolescents has been one of the leading topics of the Dutch Pediatric Surveillance System. In the current study, we have analyzed which demographic character

Improving the assessment and treatment of pelvic inflammatory disease among adolescents in an urban children's hospital emergency department.

INTRODUCTION: Proper pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) assessment and treatment is essential in preventing ectopic pregnancies, repeated PID infections, infertility, chronic pelvic pain, and fetal death. This project measured the effectiveness of interventions directed toward the providers in the emergency department to facilitate a change in the assessment and treatment of PID. Two aims identified for the project included increasing the number of providers who recorded a correct diagnosis of PID in the chart and included a sexual history for female adolescents who presented to the emergency d

Hospitalizations in adolescence and early adulthood among Swedish men and women born preterm or small for gestational age.

BACKGROUND: Preterm birth and reduced intrauterine growth appear to be related to morbidity in childhood and later adulthood. We studied whether the risk of all-cause hospitalization in adolescence and early adulthood differed between individuals who were born preterm or small for gestational age (SGA) compared with those born at term and appropriate for gestational age. METHODS: Using Swedish registries, we followed 304,275 men and women born in 1973-1975 for any hospitalizations occurring in 1987-1996. Preterm birth was defined as <37 weeks of gestation and SGA as babies smaller than 2 stan

Hospital-based directly observed therapy for HIV-infected children and adolescents to assess adherence to antiretroviral medications.

BACKGROUND: The introduction of highly active antiretroviral therapy for HIV led to significant declines in HIV-associated morbidity and mortality in children. Nonadherence to antiretroviral therapy is the leading cause of treatment failure in HIV-infected patients. The ability to recognize nonadherence is suboptimal, and differentiating it from other causes of inadequate viral suppression may be difficult. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this work was to examine the efficacy of hospital-based directly observed therapy in assessing adherence to antiretroviral medications in HIV-infected children a
