Development trajectories and predictive factors of adolescent dual-factor depressive symptoms: A latent transition analysis.

BACKGROUND: This study investigated depressive symptom profiles based on the dual core dimensions of depressed mood and anhedonia in Chinese adolescents, examining their dynamic transitions over a one-year period and the predictive effects of academic performance satisfaction (APS) and emotion reactivity (ER) on these transitions. METHODS: A longitudinal survey was conducted among 1581 Chinese secondary school students, with three waves at 6-month intervals. Depressed mood and anhedonia were assessed using the Depression subscale of the Depression Anxiety Stress Scales and the Snaith-Hamilton

Connectome-based substrates of emotional N-back performance in the adolescent brain cognitive development study.

Refinement of large-scale functional networks during adolescence facilitates maturation of cognitive and affective functions vital to adult wellbeing, including working memory and emotion regulation. Understanding how functional connectivity (FC) subserves these abilities can offer valuable insight into typical neurodevelopment and brain-based markers of vulnerability to psychopathology. The Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study includes a task designed to engage both working memory and affective processing: the Emotional N-back (EN-back). This study applied connectome-based pred

Development and Psychometric Evaluation of the Provider Confidence in Adolescent Sexual Health (P-CASH) Scale.

OBJECTIVE: To develop and psychometrically evaluate the Provider Confidence in Adolescent Sexual Health (P-CASH) Scale and to explore primary care providers' confidence delivering sexual and reproductive health (SRH) care to adolescents. METHODS: We developed scale items from a co-design study with adolescent mothers and healthcare professionals. A cross-sectional survey assessed U.S.-based primary care providers' confidence delivering SRH care using a 4-point Likert scale. Psychometric evaluation included exploratory factor analysis (EFA), internal consistency, and internal structure. We com

Cortical Structures Underlying Schizophrenia and Sex Differences in Preadolescents: An Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study.

Schizophrenia is a severe, highly disabling psychiatric disorder, and identification of early neurological indicators is essential for early diagnosis and targeted intervention. This study aimed to investigate brain structure in children with schizophrenia aged 9-10 years and to examine potential sex differences. We selected 10,332 eligible participants from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) study, of which 238 children with schizophrenia were screened by Kiddie Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia (KSADS-5) diagnostic items, and propensity score was used to match

Sex-specific trajectories of adolescent brain development and behavioral health in relation to family environments.

BACKGROUND: The associations of family environment with adolescent behavioral health are well established, yet insights into how these associations are moderated by sex, particularly through changes in brain structure, are limited. METHODS: This cohort study included over 9000 children aged 9-12 from the Adolescent Brain and Cognitive Development (ABCD) study. We used structural equation modeling to create a composite measure of family environment, incorporating factors such as family conflict, acceptance, parental monitoring and socioeconomic status, as reported by both children and parents.

The consequences of ultra-processed foods on brain development during prenatal, adolescent and adult stages.

Ultra-processed foods (UPFs) are highly refined formulations of non-nutritive compounds containing elevated amounts of sugar, fat, sodium, food additives, and dietary emulsifiers. Consumption of UPF is robustly linked to a range of non-communicable diseases, including obesity, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and mental disorders in adults. While substantial research highlights the negative health impacts of UPFs in adulthood, their effects on brain development during critical periods of biological vulnerability, pregnancy, childhood, and adolescence, remain underexplored. During pregn

Virilization at puberty in adolescent girls may reveal a 46,XY disorder of sexual development.

Although hyperandrogenism is a frequent cause of consultation in adolescent girls, more severe forms with virilization must lead to suspicion of an adrenal or ovarian tumor. However, they may also reveal a 46,XY disorder of sexual development (DSD). Here, we describe four adolescent girls referred for pubertal virilization and in whom we diagnosed a 46,XY DSD. We performed gene mutation screening by Sanger sequencing (all patients) and by next-generation sequencing (NGS) in patient #4. We identified new heterozygous NR5A1 gene variants in patients #1 and #2 and a homozygous SRD5A2 gene deletio

Editorial: The critical need to assess pubertal development in studies of child and adolescent psychopathology.

Nearly all developmental studies of youth psychopathology assess the effects of age on risk factor-youth outcomes, yet very few examine the effects of pubertal development on developmental trajectories. Growing evidence underscores the importance of both stages of puberty (adrenarche and gonadarche) in risk for psychopathology and the need to consider these developmental stages as predictors and moderators of mental health outcomes and trajectories. The purpose of this Editorial is to provide examples of this evidence and highlight gaps in our literature base as well as opportunities for futur

Development and validation of the HIV adolescent readiness for transition scale (HARTS) in South Africa.

INTRODUCTION: Adolescents living with perinatally acquired HIV have low rates of retention in care and viral suppression after the transition from paediatric to adult care. In this study, we developed and validated a tool to identify adolescent transition readiness. METHODS: We developed the HIV Adolescent Readiness for Transition Scale (HARTS) from June 2016 to May 2019 by iteratively adapting existing transition readiness scales for other chronic illnesses by conducting focus groups with 11 healthcare providers and 20 adolescents in South Africa. We administered a preliminary questionnaire

Birth weight is associated with adolescent brain development: A multimodal imaging study in monozygotic twins.

Previous research has shown that the prenatal environment, commonly indexed by birth weight (BW), is a predictor of morphological brain development. We previously showed in monozygotic (MZ) twins associations between BW and brain morphology that were independent of genetics. In the present study, we employed a longitudinal MZ twin design to investigate whether variations in prenatal environment (as indexed by discordance in BW) are associated with resting-state functional connectivity (rs-FC) and with structural connectivity. We focused on the limbic and default mode networks (DMNs), which are

Adolescent intermittent ethanol exposure: Effects on pubertal development, novelty seeking, and social interaction in adulthood.

Alcohol use initiated early in adolescence is a major predictor for the development of alcohol use disorders. This risk may be increased when drinking is initiated around the time of puberty, given evidence of bidirectional relationships between alcohol and gonadal hormones. The current study examined the effects of adolescent intermittent ethanol exposure (AIE) on pubertal timing and expression of novelty-seeking and peer-directed behaviors as well as neural correlates of these behaviors. AIE did not affect pubertal timing or the later expression of novelty-seeking and peer-directed behaviors

Effect of adolescent substance use and antisocial behavior on the development of early adulthood depression.

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a prevalent and frequently comorbid psychiatric disorder. This study evaluates the development of depressive symptoms, MDD diagnosis, and suicidal ideation in a high-risk sample (N=524) diagnosed with conduct disorder (CD) and substance use disorder (SUD) symptoms as youth and re-assessed approximately 6.5 years later. Dual trajectory classes of both alcohol and other drug use (AOD) and antisocial behavior (ASB), previously identified using latent class growth analyses (LCGA), were used to predict depression outcomes. The Dual Chronic, Increasing AOD/Persiste

The effects of sports participation on the development of left ventricular mass in adolescent boys.

OBJECTIVES: To examine the contribution of body size, biological maturation, and nonelite sports participation to longitudinal changes of left ventricular mass (LVM) in healthy boys. METHODS: One hundred and ten boys (11.0-14.5 years at baseline) were assessed biannually for 2 years. Stature, body mass, and four skinfolds were measured. Lean body mass (LBM) was estimated. Biological maturation was assessed as years from age at peak height velocity (APHV). Sports participation was assessed by questionnaire. LVM was obtained from M-mode echocardiograms using two-dimensional images. To account f

Impact of maternal physical activity during gestation on porcine fetal, neonatal, and adolescent ovarian development.

To determine how exercise from mid to late (days 40-104) gestation impacts offspring body, uterine and ovarian weight, and ovarian cell proliferation at three different developmental stages, Yorkshire gilts were either exercised by walking (EX) or not exercised (CON). In parity 1, ovaries and uteri were collected from the heaviest (H) and lightest (L) neonates and adolescent (6 mo) offspring. In parity 2, mothers were assigned the same treatment groups, and ovaries and uteri were collected from H and L fetuses on day 94 of gestation. Body weight was greater (P < 0.02) for H than L fetuses and

Development, theoretical framework, and evaluation of a parent and teacher-delivered intervention on adolescent vaccination.

The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices recommended immunization schedule for adolescents includes three vaccines (tetanus, diphtheria, and acellular pertussis [Tdap]; human papillomavirus [HPV] vaccine; and meningococcal conjugate vaccine [MCV4]) and an annual influenza vaccination. Given the increasing number of recommended vaccines for adolescents and health and economic costs associated with nonvaccination, it is imperative that effective strategies for increasing vaccination rates among adolescents are developed. This article describes the development, theoretical framework, and

Heterogeneity in development of adolescent anxiety disorder symptoms in an 8-year longitudinal community study.

In this study, we prospectively examined developmental trajectories of five anxiety disorder symptom dimensions (generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, school anxiety, separation anxiety disorder, and social anxiety disorder) from early to late adolescence in a community sample of 239 adolescents, assessed annually over 8 years. Latent growth modeling indicated different developmental trajectories from early into late adolescence for the different anxiety disorder symptoms, with some symptoms decreasing and other symptoms increasing over time. Sex differences in developmental trajectori

The potential role of brain asymmetry in the development of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis: a hypothesis.

BACKGROUND: The size asymmetry of cerebral hemispheres may predispose to head tilt and asymmetric blocking of the zygapophysial joints, potentially leading to the development of compensatory curvatures in the lower segments of the spine. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the effects of spinal manipulation, maintained by an exercise program, on the progression of idiopathic adolescent scoliosis in 2 children aged 6 and 10. CLINICAL FEATURE: The scoliosis found was 16 and 60 degrees. INTERVENTION AND OUTCOME: For diagnosis and monitoring of therapy, we recorded qualitative parameters of shoulder asymmetr

Heterogeneity among juvenile antisocial behaviours: findings from the Virginia Twin Study of Adolescent Behavioural Development.

The examination of heterogeneity in antisocial behaviour was accomplished by applying latent class analytic methods to multivariate categorical data on 389 same-sex male twins, aged 11 to 16 from the Virginia Twin Study of Adolescent Behavioural Development (VTSABD). The data included multiple measures of oppositional and conduct disorder, attention deficit disorder, hyperactivity, impulsivity, reading disability and anxiety from mother, teacher, and child report from both questionnaire and interview (child and adult psychiatric assessment; CAPA). A latent four-class model provided a good fit
