The effect of age, sex and other factors on blood chemistry in health.

Quantitative data is presented concerning the influence that age, sex, the menopause, oral contraception, blood group and time of blood collection have on 19 commonly-determined blood chemistry values. The data were derived from 1000 healthy blood donors in whom blood sampling conditions were standardised to conform with those applying to hospital out-patients. Statistical techniques were used to allow for the effects of analytical variation and to enable the effects of the various factors and their interactions to be expressed in a practically useful manner. Age and sex effects are shown to b

Modifiable risk factors associated with increased retinal age gap in an Australian population.

Retinal age gap (RAG)-the difference between retina-predicted age and chronological age-indicates biological ageing that has been linked to the risk of mortality and chronic disease. We aimed to identify risk factors associated with higher RAG in an Australian population. This cross-sectional study included 5107 participants from the Busselton Healthy Ageing Study (BHAS), a Western Australian community-based cohort. Retinal age was estimated using a validated deep-learning model applied to fundus photographs. Multivariable linear regression models were employed to examine associations between

Kawasaki disease in adolescents: age-specific clinical features and factors associated with outcomes.

OBJECTIVES: In adolescents, Kawasaki disease (KD) often manifests with non-specific clinical symptoms, which delays diagnosis and treatment and consequently increases the risk of coronary artery lesions (CALs). This study investigated the clinical characteristics of KD across age groups, focusing on adolescents, and identified age-specific factors associated with treatment resistance and CALs. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted using nationwide survey data compiled in South Korea from 2009 to 2017. RESULTS: A total of 34,408 patients with KD were stratified into four age groups

Age-related patterns of cardiometabolic risk factors for complications in type 2 diabetes.

AIMS/HYPOTHESIS: Beyond longer diabetes duration, uncertainty remains regarding the factors that contribute to a higher risk of developing complications in younger vs older people with type 2 diabetes. We investigated whether younger age was associated with a more adverse risk-factor profile compared with older age among people with type 2 diabetes. METHODS: We conducted cross-sectional analyses of demographic and clinical data from individuals with type 2 diabetes participating in national health surveys from four countries: the Australian Diabetes, Obesity and Lifestyle Study (AusDiab), the

Age Differences in Opioid Overdose Risk Factors Among Black Men: A Brief Report.

OBJECTIVE: Opioid overdose deaths continue to increase among Black Americans, despite decreases in deaths overall nationwide. Older Black men (beginning in their 50s) have a heightened risk, dying from opioid overdoses at a five-fold increase from 2015-2023. However, research identifying differences in risk factors for opioid overdose among older Black men compared to younger Black men is limited. METHOD: The current study is a secondary analysis of survey data from a study highlighting drug misuse and treatment among Black adults in Kentucky, and compares Black men 51 and older (n = 125) to

Brain DNA Methylation Age, Lifestyle Factors and Dementia in the Swedish Twin Registry.

Advanced age is the most important risk factor for dementia. Measures of biological ageing such as DNA methylation age (DNAmAge) can give more information about the accumulation of age-related molecular damage in different organs than chronological age alone. Using post-mortem brain tissue from Swedish Twin Registry participants, we explored the relationship between lifestyle factors, dementia and DNAmAge measures from prefrontal cortex and cerebellum (n = 27 individuals) and paired blood samples (n = 20 individuals). We observed that smoking was associated with a higher DNAmAge deviation (PCB

Predictive Factors of Acute Appendicitis and Its Outcomes Among the Pediatric Age Group.

Background Acute appendicitis in preschool children remains a diagnostic challenge despite advanced imaging techniques' widespread availability. The majority of these children come late, often with complications such as appendicular perforation, abscess development, and peritonitis. As a consequence, hospital stays are lengthy and linked with an increase in morbidity and mortality. In this research, we aim to predict the factors of acute appendicitis and its outcomes among the pediatric age group. Methods We conducted a retrospective study at the Maternity and Children's Hospital, Al Ahsa, Sau

Risk factors for uterine adenomyosis diagnosed by MRI in women of reproductive age.

BACKGROUND: Adenomyosis is a condition characterized by the presence of endometrial glands and stroma within the myometrium. It can manifest as either focal or diffuse. While histopathological examination of the uterus following hysterectomy remains the gold standard for definitive diagnosis, non-invasive imaging techniques, particularly magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), are crucial for diagnosis. This study aimed to investigate the risk factors and associated pathologies in women with MRI-confirmed adenomyosis. METHODS: In this case-control study, 50 women of reproductive age with MRI-confir

Identifying Age-Specific Risk Factors for Poor Outcomes After Trauma With Machine Learning.

INTRODUCTION: Risk stratification for poor outcomes is not currently age-specific. Risk stratification of older patients based on observational cohorts primarily composed of young patients may result in suboptimal clinical care and inaccurate quality benchmarking. We assessed two hypotheses. First, we hypothesized that risk factors for poor outcomes after trauma are age-dependent and, second, that the relative importance of various risk factors are also age-dependent. METHODS: A cohort study of severely injured adult trauma patients admitted to the intensive care unit 2014-2018 was performed

Age-specific differences in hypertension combination management and associated factors influencing treatment choice.

The current hypertension guideline emphasizes combination therapy, especially single-pill combination therapy (SPC). However, few studies compared the prevalence and factors associated with initial therapy choice across heterogeneous age groups in a current population. First, the authors consecutively identified 964 treatment naïve hypertensive patients in a large academic hospital from 01/31/2019 to 01/31/2020. All patients were grouped into (1) young aged, age < 55; (2) middle-aged, 55≤age < 65; and (3) older aged, age ≥65. The multivariable regression model examined the factors associated w
